Lewand lied to cops, blood alcohol content more than twice legal limit

In the wake of his drunk driving arrest, Lions president Tom Lewand received a measure of credit for immediately owning up to his mistake.

He wasn’t nearly as forthright with the arresting officers on the night in question.

Lewand told cops he was a designated driver that picked up a friend at a bar and that he hadn’t had a drink for more than a year and a half. This statement came before he failed field sobriety tests and subsequently blew a .21 blood alcohol level, more than twice the .08 limit, according to a police report released to the Detroit Free Press.

The latest details in Lewand’s case are embarrassing and more than a little sad. They also provide evidence that Lewand needs all the support necessary confronting his problem.

We suspect the league will give him extra time to do so with NFL punishment, considering executives are usually held to a higher standard.
