Willie Colon expected to miss the 2010 season

We had a feeling this Willie Colon injury was going to sting.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that the Steelers tackle is expected to miss the 2010 season with a torn Achilles’ tendon.  A sliver of hope remains because Colon has yet to get back his MRI results.

But tests are “all but certain to confirm” the worst case scenario.

We believe Colon ranks as one of the most underrated right tackles in football, so his loss is significant.  He’s started 50 straight games.  Trai Essex appears to be the most likely candidate to replace Colon in the lineup.

I don’t care which team you root for when a player inures himself in this sort of fashion when playing a game in football that is very short lived it sucks.

Trai Essex is awful. How many minutes into the first game does Leftwich get injured?

Yeah I feel bad for the guy even though I hate the Steelers. Ben better get back in shape b/c now he’s going to be running even harder for his life this year. Can’t wait to see the Squealers this year!

  7. ppdoc13 says: Jun 28, 2010 4:16 PM

Not that I am happy or anything, but this has been a really bad off season for the Steelers. Anything bad for Pittsburgh however is good for the Ravens, though I would never wish injury on anyone.
Achilles is a very difficult injury to bounce back from although you might have a better shot as a big OL rather than a RB or WR.

They’ve already moved Pouncey to his spot (which he was backing up anyway), so we’ll get to see big boy mess up some D linemen sooner than later!

True 7370355q … and thanks for the sportsmanship. I doubt any Steelers fan approves of Roethlisberger’s idiotic behavior, but considering the uncalled-for nastiness some of them seem to enjoy spewing, they’re in no position to judge. When you open a thread about a good player suffering a season-ending injury and the first post is from a Steelers fan celebrating the loss, it’s just sad.
We’ve had more than enough problems on the o-line and Leftwich isn’t known for his mobility. Sure hope Kugler can help Trai can step up and fill the void.

  18. Citizen Strange says: Jun 28, 2010 4:40 PM

This is as good an argument as any against an 18 game season. TOO MANY INJURIES.
All the owners will get one extra home game and the TV contract will be slightly bigger but they will have to have 60 or 65 or more man rosters and they will have to pay each player more per season.
Plus two extra games means two extra games where the front runners will rest their starters or meaningless games in other words.
Football is a crazy violent and dangerous game and 16 regular season games plus three or four playoff games are ENOUGH.

  22. Deb says: Jun 28, 2010 4:43 PM

    @ppdoc13 …
Hmmmm …. I don’t know if that’s true. The two best teams in the league in 08 were the Steelers and the Ravens. Last year when we struggled against Tennessee in our opener, then fell to Chicago in our second game, I really thought the Ravens would wind up being THE team to beat. But you guys were just as mediocre as we were. We finished with the same record and you only made it to the playoffs over us by mathematical formula.
Maybe it’s a yin/yang thing. We need to feed off each other ;)

Pouncey’s a center/guard. Thought they were planning to have him work in the guard position with an eye toward backing up and eventually taking over for Hartwig. Colon’s a tackle. You sure Pouncey’s moving into Colon’s spot?

  27. steeltownpride says: Jun 28, 2010 4:50 PM

Pouncey is a center/guard he is not a tackle . Look for Essex , Tony Hills , Chris Scott to battle . Also look for players cut or soon to be cut around TC .

Essex could also be moved to left tackle and Starks switched to the right side of the offensive line. Then Pouncey possibly moved into more of an interior role.”
From the Post Gazette. Hopefully moving things around will help the O Line itself, but tell you the truth, it probably can’t get much worse than it was.

According to http://www.profootballfocus.com, Colon was the third highest ranked tackle in the league last year – and the highest rated right tackle.
Essex was the worst guard in the league, out of 84 rated (you need a minimum number of snaps played to be rated).
Pouncey will slide in to guard if Essex slides over to tackle – but this hurts no matter how you cut it.

USA Toady rated the nighttime view from Mt Washington the 2nd most beautiful place in the entire country, behind only Red Rocks in Sedona. Where was Baltimore on that list?
I don’t live in Pittsburgh (I live in SoCal) so I’m not here defending my home. I’m here pointing out what a moron you are. I seem to see Pittsburgh on numerous “Best of” lists. (The only bad ranking they ever seem to get is for poor air quality – but then they are downwind from Ohio, so that is their fault). Wouldn’t want to wish ill on people but pray those in Milledgeville reap as they’ve sown. Since Colon wasn’t involved in any allegations, his injury is no more karmic for Milledgeville than any other player’s off-season injury. The more applicable quote in his case would be “sometimes a banana is just a banana.”

Evidentiary material?? What, did you get ahold of DTF-girl’s bodily fluids Deb? Wouldn’t surprise me.
Look – I don’t hate Ben, and I don’t hate you. But, the dude has got to go. I’ve been around long enough – I know what’s going to happen. Kordell — who was a really great athlete and one of my favorite all-time NFL’ers — had his one moment where he cried on the sidelines – and he never recovered the respect of many of the Steeler fans.
The fans are going to be merciless with Ben. Every interception, he’s going to hear it in his earhole. The local reporters hate him – he’s been rude to them for years. It’s never going to work out. He’s still got multiple bombshell’s from the McNulty case that are still going to land. His reputation is going to take beating after beating after beating, and he’s never going to have the fans, the team, and the local reporters on his side — and that’s a recipe for lots of losing
He just needs to go. If he was smart, he would settle his lawsuits, go lay low for a year, and then try to come back with a team that desperately needs a qb, like the Bucs or the Bills or somebody. The Steelers have never needed a qb to go 9-7, or to make a playoff run. They’ve been to the playoffs with Mark Malone, Cliff Stoudt, Bubby Brister, David Woodley, Mike Kruczek, Mike Tomczak, Neil O’Donnell, Kordell, and Tommy Maddox, among others. I’ve watched them all – not a Hall of Fame arm in that crowd, I can assure you.
All the Steelers need to do is play hard-nosed defense, and run the football effectively, and they’ll do at least as good as last year. They sure as hell don’t need Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Colon chasing DTF-girls for “Ben-A-Palooza”

  66. wyoff says: Jun 28, 2010 9:33 PM

False starting, jersey grabbing Willie Colon sucks.
In the words of Willie Colon’s agent, Paul Linta: “Willie Colon is of no use of help to anybody.”
Hopefully this will be his first step on a one way trip out of town. One less boozing buddy for Roethlisberger.
Addition by subtraction. Ramon Foster will win the spot in training camp and the Steelers’ line will be improved.

The Steelers should run the best QB they’ve had since Bradshaw because of some gullible, reactionary yinzers are upset?
“He’s still got multiple bombshell’s from the McNulty case that are still going to land.”
McNulty is certifiably insane- not that that’ll matter to the yinzers, who believe whatever they see on t.v. no questions asked.
“The Steelers have never needed a qb to go 9-7, or to make a playoff run. Those were terrible, sometimes gut wrenching years, and I don’t want to relive them. I have a hard time believing that someone who “watched them all” would want to.
“All the Steelers need to do is play hard-nosed defense, and run the football effectively, and they’ll do at least as good as last year. ”
Wow, maybe they can ride that formula all the way to the AFC Championship game, where they can lose in an embarrasing way just like they always did with that philosophy. I’m sure that you remember those times, after all, you supposedly “watched them all.”
“They sure as hell don’t need Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Colon chasing DTF-girls for “Ben-A-Palooza”

    @ItalianArmyGuy …
You would be surprised how much info I have :) Did take the research beyond the pale–but for love of the Steelers, not Ben. Had to be sure one way or the other. If the evidence had gone the other way, I’d be trying to get him released, too. He’s done STUPID things, just not that. And he shouldn’t settle with McNulty for expediency. Not worried about more bombshells there.
You’ve made the argument. Despite GREAT defenses, o-lines, etc., no playoff team you named made the podium … because they lacked a top-notch quarterback. Roethlisberger is as mature as a junior high kid. But he has the arm, mobility, leadership, and fearlessness of an elite QB. Those qualities helped get us to two Super Bowls, and he orchestrated the final drive of XLIII. But there’s still A LOT of room for improvement.
His high-risk lifestyle shows in his play. He thinks no matter what wild risk he takes, fate will save him. Sometimes it does, and that’s thrilling for fans. But often he takes unnecessary sacks or throws reckless picks. As time passes, the hits will outnumber the miracles. He can’t see that because he’s too invested in his own mystique. He won’t consider modifying his style for quicker release. And coaches let him get away with that–just as they did with his off-field behavior.
Yeah, it’ll be a rough year. But other teams have had to weather deaths, Spygate, drug scandals, rumored moves or sales, shootings, and death threats because they’ve hired an animal abuser. Ben may get booed. So? Bradshaw got booed. Tommy Maddox hadn’t been involved in a sex scandal when he found his lawn covered in garbage. Pittsburgh QBs get crucified anytime the team loses. If he wins, Steelers won’t be booing.
The media hates Belichick and Parcells. Hasn’t hurt them. And Ben’s fellow players aren’t PFT’s wide-eyed farm boys and delusional dads who think DTF college girls are never-touched-a-drop virgins who don’t know what DTF means. Players KNOW what these women are and how many athletes are falsely accused. They may not like Ben, but they believe him. If he keeps his nose clean, all but the PFT Rapistberger types will forget it in time. And how long have some Steelers fans ragged on Ray the Murder? Like the man said, karma is a bitch.
Kordell was a great athlete. But Roethlisberger is a top-tier QB who has the potential to be a great QB. If he makes some adjustments and starts putting in the kind of practice/study effort that Brady and Manning apply, he has the ability to reach that level. The others you mentioned didn’t. You don’t toss that kind of talent when the evidence shows he didn’t do the crime–and you don’t tank a guy’s career because he’s rude and immature. He’s had a wake-up call. Let’s see what he does with it.

They’ve been to the playoffs with Mark Malone, Cliff Stoudt, Bubby Brister, David Woodley, Mike Kruczek, Mike Tomczak, Neil O’Donnell, Kordell, and Tommy Maddox

ummm…how many super bowls were won by this pathetic group of QBs? I’m starting to think the total matches your IQ. Tomczak? Really? All he did was make Kordell look good which was an amazing feat but not one that produced super bowls. Keep on bashing and pretending your a Steeler fan.
    next question!

Flozell Adams is probably better anyway.
