Cedric Benson busted for assault

NFL_benson3_250.jpgA month ago, it appeared that NFL players had learned from the experiences of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  Memorial Day weekend came and went without a single arrest.

But that doesn’t mean it came without any incidents.

Bengals running back Cedric Benson has been arrested in Austin, Texas for an assault that allegedly occurred on May 30, according to Tom Plohetski of Statesman.com.  He allegedly punched a bar employee in the face at Annie’s West.

Benson faces charges of assault with injury.  He has posted bail.

A top-five pick of the Bears in 2005, Benson’s tenure in Chicago ended two years ago, after Benson was arrested for drunk boating and drunk driving within a relatively short time frame.

The latest incident comes at a time when Benson hopes to get a new contract from the Bengals.

Benson joined the Bengals during the 2008 season, and he played well enough to land a two-year deal, after testing the free-agent market.  He’s due to earn a base salary of $2.65 million in 2010.

Good to see the old Cedric back. Maybe Cinci can save themselves the heartache of getting ripped off by you much like the Bears did for most of your career in Chicago. Have another brew Jackass!

Benson needs to quit doing what he’s doing, unlike Vince Young, Benson has a history of bad conduct in the NFL and could get a suspension from Goodell, add to that, the Bengals are already being picked on. some people call them the Cincinnati Inmates or the Cincinnati Jailbergs or the Cincinnatil Convicts or Prisoners.

What in the world is going on within the Bengals organization or the NFL altogether?? I think they need to initiate a lengthy probationary period to their contracts. May be if they knew they had to stay out of trouble to keep those huge contracts there wouldn’t be so many that do!

So can someone explain to me how the Ravens somehow have a bad image? Since 2000, they have the 16th most arrests in the league, far lower than both the Steelers and Bengals. Since 2006, they have the 21st most arrests in the league, while the Bengals and Steelers are top 10. Oh, that’s right, because the Ravens hit a little too hard and embarrass everyone’s favorite players, then tell them about it. Nice work NFL. Let’s rig the ravens games bc you don’t like them, meanwhile let’s rig the Steelers games (so that they win), even though they are quite possibly the most classless team in the league.

  24. TheBengal13 says: Jun 29, 2010 12:41 PM

This just sucks. Just when Bengals fans read articles about how he’s turned his life around and has matured, this type of crap happens. As much as I like SOME of the gambles that the team has made on former high draft picks with “pasts”, they HAVE to know that one or more of these guys will revert to their old ways and bite them in the ass.
The problem with the Bengals isn’t so much that they bring these types of players in, but that once they perform, they begin to RELY on these types of guys who ultimately prove unreliable. Ced had a great year last year and is looking for a new contract. The team should have used a late-round pick on a decent RB as an insurance policy in the event that they couldn’t re-sign Benson and/or something like this happens.
Bottom line: you can take the kid out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the kid. Guys like Benson, Mike Vick, Adam Jones, Randy Moss, Big Ben, Lawrence Taylor, etc will ALWAYS be those types of degenerates.

  25. Siggy00 says: Jun 29, 2010 12:43 PM

That’s three arrests. Clearly hasn’t learned. Clearly a pattern of behavior.
Four to six games off for him too!
    Bye now!

  26. andrewtrice says: Jun 29, 2010 12:45 PM

Fact: the last two times that Benson “got in trouble” … a grand jury chose not to indict him. The last time I checked an arrest without an indictment means that you did nothing wrong. Maybe … just maybe … this arrest is BS too. After all, how often do the police wait an entire month to follow up on an assault allegation? Maybe it took the “injured” person a month to realize that Benson is a rich football player who could be coerced into paying a settlement by a bogus allegation. Not to cast doubt on the fine policemen in Texas, but third time would be the charm.

  27. ppdoc13 says: Jun 29, 2010 12:46 PM

Talk about a sense of entitlement and doing everything to piss it away!!

It’s funny how the Bengals still have a bad rep when they have a lot fewer incidents than most teams. So here come the Bengals haters! I love it. We’ll still top the North this year. I hope Goodell lays it on Ced as he deserves it. It sucks for us but he was a bonehead and deserves to be punished. But yeah keep hatin on the Bengals. We’ve been much better than most teams.

The Bengals had OTA’s on May 27 and June 1. Benson has a home right outside of Cincinnati. So Benson flew to Texas to punch someone in the face, and then caught the red-eye back for practice.

What are you even talking about, man? I’ve RARELY heard of anyone painting the Ravens in a negative light in terms of arrests (outside of the Ray Lewis murder jokes from time to time). If anything, PFT is ridiculously guilty of continuous ball-washing the Ravens, painting them the darlings of the 2010 season.
And, as for refs and the NFL “rigging games” to screw the Ravens, are you freaking kidding? I don’t even know where to begin to tell you how big of a mongoloid you sound like with a statement like that.

It’s a shame the NFL is letting thugs like this play the game. I’m starting to get tired of hearing about these repeat offenders.
Baseball was my number one sport like most of America until the strikes and steriod issues. Starting to think all of the NFL success is getting out of control, if there is a strike over all the money both sides make, maybe it’s time for another sport to be America’s pastime!
Hockey seems like a sport that has more decent players that you wouldn’t mind having a beer with than the NFL and Baseball, maybe I’ll start following that more…..

  48. Sow Crates says: Jun 29, 2010 1:18 PM

If nothing else, this should provide sympathy for the Chicago Bears for giving up on Cedric Benson when they did. He held out his rookie year, was paid heavily for poor numbers to run in the same system Thomas Jones did, had multiple off the field run-ins with the police, and Chicago guessed right that they had themselves a good player (and yes, he’s still a good player even if overrated going into last season) in Matt Forte.
Perhaps Benson was screwed over by Texas police one of the 3-4 occasions where he’s made the news. But you know what? Hundreds and hundreds of NFL players, dozens more recognizable than Benson, plenty of them from Texas and their out of the law enforcement spotlight a lot more than Benson.

  52. WhoPlaysWhere says: Jun 29, 2010 1:24 PM

I am a season ticket Bengals fan and here’s my take regarding Cedric and some comments on here:
    1. Guess it didn’t work out. You play with fire, you get burned……………. If the suspension is longer than 2 games, move on and find someone else.
    2. I personally do think the Ravens get screwed on calls and I love it. I will say this, they play very aggresive and get called on it sometimes.
    3. If you’re team was in the same boat as the Bengals (no Cedric/boat pun intended), would you really stop being a fan and pick a new team or suck it up and hope for change? Should Steeler fans stop supporting the Steelers with all their recent troubles? I think not, do me a favor and hate on the turd who is in trouble not the fans of the game/ team.
    4. Did a Browns fan say something? Hey, are you guys even going to have a team this year?

If I were to set your car on fire tonight, and not get caught….I guess I did not do anything wrong because I did not get indicted.

Well lets see… This is the third time he has been arrested in Texas. The first two were summarily dropped do to innapropriate activity by the police. And this one they pursued without interviewing Benson, and an unusual 30 days after the fact for a misdemeanor. I could not care any less about Big Ben and his prepubescent antics. The Steelers cannot win the division with or without him. Also, the last time I checked, banging a blackout-drunk sorority girl in the bathroom is a slightly more problematic than being arrested for being sober … twice, or for being punched in the face once. Big Ben brings it on himself. Cedric is a victim of circumstances.
