All I was trying to say is that there are certain folks on here that seemingly do alot of research, USUALLY provide insightful opinions , and provide me with an entertaining way to pass some time. Even though they have opposing opinions they each make a pretty good arguement for their stand. They’re pretty good at s**t slinging too.
Plus, I like giving PFLS a little hell from time to time.

Majik; I’m getting a little confused. Are we talking about Packer fans or the Packer franchise?
Let me say this as far as the fans go; love and hate are two sides of the same coin, and given the situation, no, this will never be forgotten. But those of us who blame Brett for what happened have long since recovered. He’s gone, he’s a Viking, and we’re thrilled to have ARod, a tremendous young qb that will be around for a decade of more. If you blame Ted, then since he’s still around, I guess you haven’t recovered.
As far as the franchise is concerned there’s nothing to recover from. Beating Minnesota has always been a challenge, and always will be. You don’t think Ted Thompson or Mike McCarthy are worried about what the fans think about them? They know that all they have to do is win games with the guys they have, and if they don’t, it won’t matter if the fans think they “ran off” Favre or not.
When I’m doing my typical anti-favre rant, it isn’t because he wanted to play somewhere else. It’s because in the last couple of years Brett and the NFL have been exploiting this gunslinger myth, and I’m just here trying to show people who he really is.
“Brett, why did you throw all those interceptions?”
“Because I’ll do anything I can to give my team a chance to win.”

Of course that is dumb money. No one is expecting Ted to sign big names just for the sake of signing big names.
Dan Snyder is a moron who doesn’t know how to build a team. Ted is also a moron who doesn’t know the first thing about building a team. They may have different approaches to failure, but the end result is the same, so who cares?
It’s like Olbermann and Hannity. They spew very different opinions, but they are still equal at being douchebags. Reality is somewhere in between. It’s all about finding the balance.
You don’t need to sign Peppers, or trade away your first round pick every year. You also don’t need to avoid free agency and trades altogether. Hopefully the Packers’ next GM can bring some of that balance into the equation. Then, and only then, can they be a successful team again.

You are correct. Packer fans are not over the Favre deffection. We either love him r hate him I fot one think he played us for fools and he’s played the Jets and Vikes for fools. He’s a great football player but a lousy human being. To get into why I think so would take pages of comment so I’ll let it go at that. Just because some still feel passionately about how Favre crapped on people who supported him through some of the worst times of his life doesn’t mean that we’d rather have him as our quarterback. I like Rodgers. He’s young and will make mistakes. Unfortunately Favre was his tutor (even though he didn’t want to be) so he probably has some bad habits to lose. He’ll be alright long term. I also believe the long term outlook for the Packers is brighter than the aging Vikings.

I never said I fully supported TT. He’s made some lousy moves yet he has done some good things. I also think both he and McCarthy are on short leashes this year.

The real humor is to be found in the fact that, when Favre left GB., 90% of the Packer fans were on these boards screaming about what a complete moron Thompson was and how he should be fired and that Favre was the greatest QB the game had ever seen. The Vikings fans were taunting the Packer fans about Favre being a choker.
Funny how a man putting on a different colored jersey can change so many people’s opinions. It’s one of the few things in this world that can, it seems.
I wonder if PFT keeps an archive of comments? It would be a hoot if they could throw a story up with comments from back then.

I never said Favre never made mistakes. In fact, I’m fully aware that he has, and I’m the first to admit it. Unlike the majority of Packer fans, who blame every loss during Favre’s tenure entirely on Brett, but conveniently call it a team game, a team loss, when Rodgers blows it at the end.
Fact is, Rodgers put his team in an early hole, then choked with a chance to win in OT, twice. Like I said, impressive stat line, but even more costly mistakes.
As far as Packer fans being over Favre since 2008, well, the 152 posts on an article about Favre throwing passes at his local high school just as he has done for the last 3 years makes it pretty evident that you aren’t even close to recovered.

Listen Contra, when you see guys like Ambrose, RC IV, Super, Beer Cheese, bluestree, Ruvell, Majik, and there’s a few other intelligent Vike fans I’m leaving out here–there’s usually an actual conversation going on that if you actually read you might just pick up some football knowledge.
Those are the times that you need to keep those gems of yours (Yeah Ted sucks balls as a gm) to your self. That’s probably the best time for folks like you , sando, FoF, se18a29hut hut, to go on a posting hiatus. I know that I usually just kick back & read when these guys go at it. Tom Dimitroff and Jeff Ireland are probably going to disagree with you there, as do I. These guys took over 4-12 and 1-15 teams, and led them to 11-5 and playoff appearances in one year.
And you act like Ted traded Favre for Matthews heads up. In reality, Ted traded a QB who has been voted to 2 consecutive Pro Bowls since the trade, along with a 2nd and 3rd round pick for one Clay Matthews. Yep, that’s crafty. And for every othe Thompson draft “success” you can list, I can produce at least 3 failures.
No one ever said that you have to make Peppers and Haynesworth style signings. That’s foolish. But you’re only speaking in extremes, because using logic and speaking rationally aren’t your strong suits. I mean, look at the Saints. A few years of drafting well, making a few good trades, and being active, yet intelligent in free agency yielded them a Super Bowl win. Ted’s methods have resulted in 2 losing seasons and only one playoff win.

Hey Majik………So you’re contending that the team Ted inherited was a good team? That’s your argument? Hadn’t had a losing season in 15 years? And where they were had what to do with where they are going? Ted got an was an old, tired team headed south. Maybe he should ahve waited till we became the Detroit Lions before taking painful steps like letting Rivera (who did nothing in Dallas) or Wahle (who got all pro money for a couple of good years in Carolina but is now going on two years out of football) go?
And please with the “stats” argument. That is so weak. AR puts up great numbers so now that’s a bad thing, cuz he put up great numbers but didn’t win the Division or the Championship. It’s a team game, man. AR did all he could. And bringing up the end of the Cardinals game is so lame. He made some great plays in that game and a couple of big mistakes. Gee, BF never made mistakes in big games! Come on man!
Then you’re going to compare GB to Pittsburgh! My Steeler fan buddies will appreciate you calling it a “cold dump”. If you’re a young African American man, how hard is it to find a good barbershop in Pittsburgh? How hard is it to find some food that reminds you of what your mother made for you.? How hard is it to find a church to take your family that worships in the way to which you are accustomed? You heard Woodson say he didn’t want to come to GB. And it took him a while to adjust, and he played in Michigan!
And of couse, you had to bring up Brett, cuz that’s all this is really about, maybe? No player will tell you they shit on Favre. They say it all the time, it’s a business. The only people that think that are fans. Bottom line, it’s a business. The idea that the organization is the reason FA’s don’t want to come to Green Bay is cuz how they treated Favre is purely ludicrous.
Listen to Nick Barnett on NFLN. What he says about Rodgers, and maybe you’ll get it. “He’s in the locker room with the team…” Now Brett can suck up to the whole state of Minnesota to make himself look good, but he quit on the Packers and his teamates long before he left town.
I got news for ya, we recovered from Brett after ’08. As far as the Packers, and their real fans, that’s history. It’s the Vikings that will have to try to recover. You’ll see, and I’ll be here to remind you.

And I believe the free agent signings being referenced are impact signings, not just collecting backup tight ends and long snappers.
But Grant and Woodson were good moves. So you can cling to those 2 good roster moves in 5 years, which is nice.

Normally, it would be a great accomplishment to build a team up to a playoff team in 5 years… if said team was a perennial bottom dwelling loser. But Ted was handed the keys to a team that hadn’t had a losing season in over 15 years, and has had 2 losing seasons in 5 years.
His team has finished 3rd and 2nd the last 2 years in a 4 team division. Now, I realize that Rodgers puts up great fantasy numbers, and that the defense looks great stat wise. But fantasy stats don’t win actual games. And that #2 defense was definitely exposed against the Cards, and they did nothing to upgrade it.
Rodgers once again put up impressive numbers in that game as well, but his early pick set the tone of the game, and the late fumblepunt is what sealed his teams’ fate.
As for players not wanting to be in GB just because of the non appealing climate and lack of local attractiveness, that may be part of it, but not all. Pittsburgh is a cold, dump of a city, yet they have no trouble bringing in players. It’s got a lot more to do with the level of talent, and how the management treats its players. Look at it from a player’s perspective. A potential free agent has to say to himself, “Wow, if they just shit all over Brett Favre, they wouldn’t think twice about giving me the shaft.” I know I would.
GB fans all pretend, and some may genuinely believe, they are better off without Favre, but truth be told, this could be something that the Packers’ franchise never recovers from.

@Soup and Majik; I agree Ted’s not a “draft genius”. Nobody is. The draft is a crapshoot, and going back and saying he drafted this guy or that is just hindsight. Of course, eventually he will be held accountable.
But the real point is this. When he came to Green Bay, there was no depth. Our defensive starters weren’t that good, and the backups were pitiful. Ted’s replaced nearly the whole team, and we have some decent depth. We’re on the cusp of being elite, and we’re young and we have some depth. That’s bad?
Somebody brought up Hawk. Say what you want, there are 20 teams he would start for tomorrow. Now you can point to anybody who went later and has had more sucess, but you can do that with anybody. That the way the draft is.
As far as the whole free agent thing goes, there’s more to it the just “signing” the guy. First, there has to be a player available you need. There are fewer of those guys every year. Free agency is nearly dead. If there is a big name free agent available, it’s because someone else wants rid of him. Second, the guy has to want to play in Green Bay, and let’s be honest, to a lot of young men, that is not appealing. It’s a fishbowl, and there’s little there that resembles the life a kid from Florida, Texas or California can relate too.
And again, for every impact free agent acquisition you can name, I’ll give you two that busted.
Ted isn’t a genius, but he was voted exec of the year by his peers. He is well regarded in the league. The only guys that have no respect for the job he’s done are fans. Like Hawk, if Green Bay dumped him he’d have a job tomorrow.

I have never once heard one of the other 31 NFL head execs. call Ted a draft “genious” (it’s genius by the way). And I doubt anyone else has either, because it’s never happened. But if it has, please, prove me wrong, and provide some evidence to back your BS.
Also, I believe Tom Benson would disagree with your theory of how to build a winning NFL team. I’m pretty sure that many of the core players on the Super Bowl Champion Saints came from trades and free agency.
Sorry to rain on your Teddy worship parade by throwing those pesky facts out there, but it had to be done.

That was arguably your most accurate post to date, so long as you remove the closing statement. Good work. I fully agree. You have to build your core through the draft. Then you use free agency, spend money occasionally, and also make trades to fill the holes in your roster (unless your name is Ted).
It shows you may actually know a thing or two about football, except, once again, for your closing statement. No one considers Ted a “genious” except for you, and you have to post under six usernames (and counting) to get anyone to back that up.
Ted has made a few good draft picks, but far more terrible ones, and his unwillingness to ever admit mistakes prevents him from improving in that regard. Hawk and Harrell alone would have cost many GMs their job, but he stands by them, and to this day considers them both smart picks. No one in the league considers that mentality the mark of a “genious”. No one.
