Eagles claim the "details have not changed" regarding Vick incident

Earlier today, the Associated Press reported that the Eagles are “strongly considering” cutting quarterback Mike Vick.  The Eagles responded by leaking to two of ESPN’s key information men a denial of the AP report, and then by issuing a holiday weekend statement addressing the situation.

Here’s the full text of it:

“Under normal circumstances, we would not issue a public statement
regarding a matter still under investigation.  However, due to the
intense speculation that exists, we believe it is important to make a
statement this afternoon regarding Michael Vick.

“Following the incident that occurred in Virginia on the morning of
June 25, Michael and his representatives promptly contacted law
enforcement agencies, the Philadelphia Eagles and the National Football
League.  The Eagles were provided with very detailed information during
that discussion as to what took place at the event.  Those details have
not changed in any way over the course of the last week.  Our
investigation to this point has confirmed and has been consistent with
the information that was originally communicated to us.

“Furthermore, any report or speculation that suggests the Eagles are
considering releasing Vick are not true.  We will continue to gather
information and monitor the situation and we will not have any further
comment until that process is complete.”

More significant than the Eagles’ perfunctory statement that they’re not considering cutting Vick (though it’s possible that they’re not, there’s no way they would admit it if, as reported by the AP, they are) is the suggestion that the “very detailed information” they received the morning after the incident has “not changed” in any way.

This means one of two things:  (1) that Vick told the Eagles from the outset that he left the club only two minutes before the shooting; or (2) that the Eagles are saying whatever they have to say in order to make Vick look like he has been honest and truthful throughout this process.

The strong comments from Vick’s lawyer, Lawrence Woodward, tend to undermine the first option, since his words reinforce the notion that Vick said he left the club long before the shooting.  So logic leads us to conclude that the Eagles are trying to control the bleeding on this one by characterizing Vick in a positive light, possibly in the hopes of unloading him via a trade.

So where would he be traded?  At this point it’s not clear.  But two points come to mind.

First, the Bengals made Vick an offer last year, before he signed with the Eagles.  Second, Eagles coach Andy Reid and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis have been spending plenty of time together on a USO tour to the Middle East.

no, you’re just so obsessed you are playing word games and digging for something thats not there. Someone does not know exactly when an incident happened so he can only go by when he “heard” it happened. That being said, he never once gave an exact time aka 2:03, 1:57, 12:19 etc. He just gave a random round number he assumed. Big deal,
anyway You are simply running out of options to attack him with.

LOL!! Yeah Florio, just because you were too dense to notice that there was never any direct quote from Mike Vick, please dont insult those of us who DID. Now why dont you tell us how Marcus is connected to the shooting again? LOL

I guess it’s kind of tough trying to slam a guy by reporting only speculations and not the facts.

I’d like to know what frame of reference Vick is using to state he left “long before” the shooting. Did he get a call/text from someone at the club? From the police? See a story on the news? To say he left long before the shooting indicates he knew what time the shooting occured and where he was when it happened. That means he has knowledge or facts to prove this. I want to see it investigated further as to what exactly makes him know this.

  8. Indyeagle says: Jul 3, 2010 8:35 PM

Okay, I haven’t said anything because all the bull you are spouting really means nothing in the long run. However, you continue to say that Vick is somehow responsible for the reporting that he left well before shots were filed. Even if the tapes show it was only three minutes, how do you know it wasn’t twenty minutes before Vick found out? How do you know that someone didn’t tell Vick that it “just happened a few minutes ago” when they informed Vick 20 minutes after it happened?
YOU DON’T! So quit trying to place a smoking gun in the man’s hands and let the facts come out.
Lastly, this site has turned into NFLTMZ and I am real close to eliminating it from my list of daily visits. Not that it matters to you, but I wanted you to know nonetheless.

Vick to the Bengals . Well there the QB for the jailhouse team . STAY CLASSLESS BENGALS.

  10. hotchick says: Jul 3, 2010 8:40 PM

    A trade ain’t gonna happen.
Simple the Eagles do not have a back-up QB other then Vick.
If they were going to trade him and sign someone else as the back-up, why would they have not done so earlier when they could get more for him instead of after an “incident?”
Who would want him? OK, you can out of desperation come up with Cincy as a long shot option. no one else. (sure lets throw the Raiders in…oh Wait Jason Campbell) So why would Cincy trade for him when they could get him after he is released? Especially since no one else wants him.
Better still, If the incident is too much for Philly to justify keeping him, why would it not be too much for some team to not only keep him, but give something up to get him?
Chase lame rumors all you want. Its Philly or bust for Vick in 2010. He’s their back-up QB or he’s watching from home (be it a house in the suburbs or Levenworth)

Yep- that is the only two things it could be. The vision of a lawyer turned vicious blogger is so clear…

Just because people have different versions of a story, it doesn’t mean any details have changed. And the versions are not materially different, in any case.
Vick may in fact be cut at some point in the next month or two, but the Eagles aren’t going to be rushed into a decision and sure as hell aren’t going to spend their holiday weekend worrying about it. If it’s a football decision, it will be made in August. If it’s a non-football decision, possibly before that, but a small discrepancy in time like the one you keep trying to make a big thing out of is just not going to make a difference here.

  14. robhug71 says: Jul 3, 2010 9:39 PM

The more the NFL protects Vick, the more apparent it is to me that the league cut a deal in which it promised Vick a continued livelihood if he took the entire fall, did the prison time and kept his mouth shut about a dogfighting ring that, in all likelihood, involved several other NFL players.
NFL players do nothing alone. They hunt, fish, drink and chase women … together.
At the time of his arrest, I was astonished that Vick was the only NFL player implicated in the crime. I was just as astonished that brother Marcus wasn’t linked in anyway.
I’m guessing the NFL has no choice but to back the Vicks to the bitter end.

Been discussed on WIP all day. Here is the consensus…
Eagles are saying that what Michael Vick told them has not officially been contested by the police of NFL investigations.
They are, of course, in progress – so this is to be expected.
There are no police or NFL “findings” as of yet that could possibly contradict Vick’s claim.
Birds are gonna wait this one out and see what develops.
So this part is really a non-story. What else would they do?

  18. NationalFelonLeague.com © says: Jul 3, 2010 11:01 PM

    Waiting it out is all.
Hard to see the Bengals seriously considering him, imagine te offer was made assuming he could play and now it is obvious he can’t.
NFL has the final say and I al guessing it won’t be good for the Vicktim.

I love all the Vick worshipers. Why do you love your ex-con so much? It’s certainly not for his ability on the field, which is nil. Obviously it’s not for his integrity, which is non-existent. He’s an over-the-hill, has-been who not only didn’t live up to his hype but pissed it away like the ignorant punk that he is. And next time one of you worshipers rant about how he only killed dogs, get a clue. Dog fighting is illegal, betting on dog fighting is illegal. Your idol broke the law for years, it wasn’t a mistake, not an accident. He did it, knowingly, period. Let’s not forget how your idol spread his STD’s, knowingly. What a guy, continue to bow down to him. He doesn’t give a crap about you. Your idol wouldn’t spit on you if you were in flames. Continue to bow.

i note the wusse posse was out early on this one.
u vicklovers will simply support him no matter what. like dogfighting, it’s a black thang.
the eagles simply arent going to admit a mistake until they get another, and a real one this time, backup qb.
but they wont be able to trade him. and the days of big contracts are now over. the eagles could have got something of value for what they paid vick last year…
if the nfl did ‘punish’ vick for all nfl dogfighters, they screwed up. they should have let them all go down hard.
the game can go on without all the reprobates.

Well said. HOWEVER….he was in the club with people that, by explicit agreement, he’s not supposed to be consorting with, and in the course of the evening, someone was shot, allegedly by one of those people. He may be guilty of only violating the conditions of his parole, but he still looks like a flaming idiot, and it puts the Eagles in a rather precarious position as to how to address the future. They paid this chump, and he’s done nothing to earn a dime of it.
Not that I mind seeing the Eagles suffer, but wrong is wrong. Michael Vick is indefensible in this case.

  28. Meat Tuperello says: Jul 4, 2010 11:54 AM

Hogster, You are right. Mike Vick shouldn’t receive the sugar coating he has received in the past. He shouldn’t have things covered up or sweetheart deals just based on his exceptional athletic ability.
He’s received more 2nd chances than most, and many chances that he hasn’t deserved. He’s received gifts that the common man black/white/etc would not receive.
Some of his defenders don’t give a damn about ideals.

I think it is hilarious that the conVict defenders are trying to make it out like all whites are out to get him, turning it into a racial thing.
Jon Evans- I have seen some of your posts on here that say “You weren’t calling for Big Ben’s head” and things of that nature. I would be willing to bet that 90% of the people on here that think Vict should be kicked out of the league also posted about Rapelisburger needing to be suspended. It is not (at least for me) a Black vs. White issue. It is a POS issue. I could care less about the color of a man, just his character, and Vict (as well as Rapelisburger) have none. A piece of crap is a piece of crap.
Another issue Jon Evans- you pop off about being 100% right, 100% of the time. For someone who claims to have the college degrees that you have, it should be clear to you that you have a severe case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Oh and your spelling and word usage is much less than 100% as well.

I too was amazed that Marcus was never linked to the dogfighting fiasco. He has no job, no income except for big bro Mike, and he’s also a retarded moron (runs in the familly apparently!) so it doesn’t make sense he wasn’t in the middle of that.
I suspect most of the NFL idiots (Clinton Portis and DeAngelo Hall come to mind) were also involved to some degree.

I am 100% right, prove me wrong? #2 you don’t even know how to correctly diagnose such a disorder. You basically just said I have a narcissistic disorder based on the act of defending myself with a simple over view of some of my education /boggle which.. Basically makes everything you said worthless. Also I have pointed it out multiple times, typically when people are beaten on the internet they fall back to attacking typos or grammar errors because they lack the intelligence to post on topic. Most of the time i only backspace part of what I wrote and insert a new line. This is a stupid little comment section on the internet. i am not going to post as if I am at work/school. Here is a reality check; I wouldn’t have passed basic college writing/English courses if I didn’t do it right at some point. Obviously with a little common sense, you can come to the conclusion that I simply, don’t care enough to proof read. i get my point across and that’s that. I obviously DO get my point across since it causes such a major crack in the egos of people on this site.

    ************
They have been doing that since Day One of their hero’s downward spiral. It goes to show you that despite 20 years of liberal social propaganda, blacks are just as racist as whites.
Sadly, playing the race card *every* time a black person doesn’t get a job, is centered out in a scandal or gets convicted for a crime only serves to reduce the level society cares when someone truly is the victim of racial discrimination. It also demonstrates that black America has a long way to go before it will ever be on par with their white counterpart. Every time an Al Sharpton wannabe screams “racism” they take one step forward and two more back. Sad.
