Eagles try to throw water on reports of potential Vick release

The Associated Press reported earlier today that the Eagles are “strongly considering” the possibility of cutting quarterback Mike Vick.

Now, two ESPN reporters (who curiously aren’t contradicting each other) report that the Eagles deny that Vick is in jeopardy.

Said Chris Mortensen, via Twitter:  “A very high-ranking Eagles source says ‘No’ on report that Eagles are seriously thinking about releasing Michael Vick.”

Adam Schefter, also via Twitter, reports on “[a]nother strong denial from another member of Eagles organization.”

Here’s our take.

First, the Eagles (like many other NFL teams) have diminished credibility on matters of this nature.  In January, coach Andy Reid declared that Donovan McNabb would be the starting quarterback in 2010.  Since Reid didn’t add “of the Redskins,” the reality is that Reid told something other than the truth.

Second, the Eagles — who seem to continue to believe that the NFL eventually will hand out a lifetime Lombardi Trophy based on savvy business deals — surely would prefer trading Vick to cutting him.  So if they can get someone who had made an offer at which the Eagles turned up their beaks earlier this year to put the offer (or something close to it) back on the table, why not save a little face and get a little something of value?

That strategy won’t work if the Eagles fail to strongly deny a report that they’re thinking about cutting him.

Third, another tweet from Mort suggests that his source is trying to build a flimsy case to support the notion that the Eagles are keeping Vick based on circumstantial evidence relating to the $1.5 million roster bonus Vick earned in March.  “By the way,” Mort writes, “Eagles went ahead and paid $1.5 million bonus to Vick late this week; they could’ve tried to drag that out.”

They could’ve tried, but they would’ve failed — miserably.  As we all learned thanks to the Falcons attempt to get millions back from Vick several years ago, roster bonuses aren’t subject to forfeiture.  Vick was on the roster on the fifth day of the league year, and thus he earned the bonus.  Failure to pay the money when due would have created a storm of something other than snow (but with the same number of letters), since the Eagles would have been in blatant violation of Vick’s contract.

And if the Eagles had failed to do that which they are clearly required to do under the terms of Vick’s contract, the message would have been clear:  they’re seriously considering cutting him.

So we think the Eagles are being coy, just like they were in January when Reid proclaimed that McNabb was going nowhere.

Hell, at least someone from the team was willing to put a name and a face to the fib the last time around.

UPDATE:  The Eagles have since issued a statement denying that they are considering releasing Vick.  So now it’s even more like the McNabb situation.

This article insinuates there were trade offers for Vick earlier this year?
    Really?
Who would trade for this has-been, who never was all that good? Did I miss something from last year? Prior to last season Vick was on the open market for a long time, & the only team that wanted him was the Eagles.

Eagles strongly deny something must mean it is true.
They were also not interested in Vick a month before they signed him.

Ok, now I see that Florio and this site have a SERIOUS HARDON for Vick to be unemployed. Did Vick take your bike when HE was a kid? Did he give it to your mom? You report one thing and not one but TWO other journalists contradict your story so you try to discredit them and the EAGLES motives for saying such a thing.

    Now that’s good stuff.
The Eagles have never won anything but they continue to think they’re smarter than everyone else. The rest of the league let Vick flounder but it was the Eagles who tied up cap money on a backup they never needed. The guy still can’t hit the broad side of a barn. Vick and that $hith0le of a city deserve each other.

  10. bigrig says: Jul 3, 2010 2:43 PM

If all they could get for McNabb was a second and some other scraps, what the hell do they think they will get for Vick?
If they can get even a conditional pick based on playing time, they should jump.

  12. bigrig says: Jul 3, 2010 2:54 PM

None of this Vick stuff really matters anyway since he has been a nonfactor on the field for the last three seasons.
When you are away as long as Vick, the first thing to go is the legs. And from what he showed in ’09, the extra gear he used to have that made him special just isn’t there anymore.
Vick can still create the occasional highlight, but to sustain a starting QB level of play is doubtful.
If Vick has to depend on his arm for success, things will get ugly in a hurry.

It’s hard to believe anything owners, coaches, players, and the press say.
They say one thing, then the next day, the opposites happen.
Nick Saban said he wasn’t going to leave the Dolphins.
Butch Davis said he wasn’t going to leave the University of Miami.
I can understand why there is some lying to the media is involved (especially when a coach is trying to go to another team/college, etc) or is a player is asked if they will retire at the end of the year….some coaches/players don’t want to the news to be a distraction. Regardless, the only news I believe is when something actually happens.

  14. rmm9090 says: Jul 3, 2010 3:33 PM

Anybody with a half a brain knows it went something like this. Andy Reid: “Come on boss, let’s get Vick out of the pen (kinda like a bullpen). We’ll throw a choker style dog collar contract on his ass. Then after he served his purpose as a smoke screen for publicity and athletics, we’ll flip him to the highest bidder.” We’ll make out like a “big dog”. I guess your choker collar needs to tighten up a notch or two on this POS, huh, Andy?

Its amazing how much attention is being given to a player who hasn’t done squat on a football field in the last 3 years. The Eagles should just cut him loose, take the flak for signing him in the first place, and move on.

As an Eagles fan, the arrogance is extremely frustrating. They really do act like they have accomplished something, when in fact that have accomplished nothing.
The most painful part of this whole deal is that we have lost the ability, as Eagles fans, to say that we don’t sign criminals. That was the one thing we always had on the Giants and Cowboys, we certainly don’t have the trophies.
Vick and the excuse makers on this site make me sick.

  21. StupidRednecks says: Jul 3, 2010 4:05 PM

Do you guys really believe that the Eagles would turn over the starting position to a guy that shined against the lowly Chiefs, but stunk up the place against the Ravens after McNabb was benched without a backup plan?
You guys need to stop smoking with Chris Sims.
Andy Reid never wanted Kolb, that was a higher up decision.
Andy Reid has and will always prefer Vick over Kolb. If they wanted to get another backup player, they could have done so anytime they wanted to.
Why do you think they are splitting the snaps in the OTAs with Vick and Kolb? They have even designed an offense just for Vick.
Remember when Desean Jackson was saying how losing McNabb was no big deal and how Kolb is just as good?
When was the last time Jackson has stated that since the OTAs started?
However, after the Vick incident happened, Jackson did say and I quote……….
“I hope he doesn’t miss too much time, because we will need him this season”.
Doesn’t sound like too much confidence in that quote.
It’s a lot different when you pad the stat sheets against the Chiefs.

    1) Reid was asked about Vick on a USO tour of Afghanistan
    2) A press release was issued on a holiday weekend
    That qualifies as an embarrassment.

You should ask yourself [honestly] why you have so much hate for white guys.
Then go look in the mirror to see where your real problem lies.
You’ve got a lot more important issues to deal with than whether a convicted felon is getting a raw deal by society and the NFL.
Your anger towards another race is bordering on psychotic. You seem to have enough anger to be capable of committing a hate crime.

There are less than 5 current starters with more pro bowls than Mike Vick,
You guys need to seriously forget about the RICHEST contract in NFL HISTORY. There will NEVER be another qb to earn that type of money.

  42. Mooch says: Jul 3, 2010 7:15 PM

    SRN -
You would have to take those stats and then divide by years in the league for the kind of comparison you are making.
Of course Vick has more wins that Sam Bradford or Flacco or Ryan.
So why can’t the Eagles get a 5th rounder for Vick, as they signed him to slip him for a pick last Spring to no avail?
Do that analysis and then get back to me.
Or do you think Dilfer is better than 99% of NFl QB’s throughout history? Under your rationale, Dilfer and Eli Manning are way better than Vick.
And last I checked, Dilfer was white.
