Nick Barnett predicts Super Bowl for Pack

The Green Bay Packers are a wildly popular pick to emerge as this year’s NFC representative in Super Bowl XLV, and Packers linebacker Nick Barnett is unsurprisingly on the bandwagon.

Barnett appeared on NFL Network’s Total Access program Friday night.  Though Barnett admitted that “every year I think we’re going to the Super Bowl,” Green Bay’s leading tackler segued Jamie Dukes’ question about the Packers’ first-half egg-laying in January’s playoff loss into a prediction that the game “is just going to make our Super Bowl run that much sweeter [this] year.”
Barnett gave his opinion on what went wrong in Green Bay’s thrilling but ultimately season-ending, 51-45 postseason loss to Arizona.
“We run that game over and over in our head,” he said.  “And to be honest with you I think Kurt Warner was just on that time.  We made some mistakes, but you know he picked it apart.  When a quarterback’s on like that he sees a mistake and … attacks it, there’s not too much you can do.”
The Packers led the NFC in total defense during the 2009 regular season, so their early meltdown in the game was shocking.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead, and, despite some heroics from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Packers would never jump out in front.

Problem is, 3 QBs were just “on like that” – Favre, Ben and Warner – so it’s no coincidence. If Capers doesn’t find a fix for those lapses it’ll be another short post-season.

No worries, Nick. We literally knocked Warner out for you, then went on to knock the shit of your ex-teammate too!

    That would be news.

When the offense scores 45 points in a playoff game, and you still lose, it’s a fair assumption the defense ummm, made some mistakes. As a football fan though, that was a great game to watch.

Those Packers lb’s/safetys can’t cover at all. Unless their pass rush is dominant, they will always struggle against elite QBs

As was stated earlier, no pass rush. Was just covered yesterday on NFLN regarding the importance of Raji taking the next step. Warner, Ben et al. had lot’s of room to step up in the pocket and let those crossing routes develop. And we were playing Trevor Ford and Jarret Bush, our No. 10 and 11 guys, not to make excuses, because we still should have won the game. As much as they shredded us, we shredded them, and spotted 17 from the get go.
If you don’t realize Green Bay is a beast, you must not know jack about football. Better start watching more soccer.

  20. Qoojo says: Jul 3, 2010 5:12 PM

No pressure on the QB and poor coverage is why you lost Nick. I am a packer fan, and even I don’t see the defense changing that much, so no superbowl Nick. Once again, the defense will not be good enough this year.

  21. nerd says: Jul 3, 2010 5:12 PM

The offense cost us that playoff game. You turn the ball over in your own red zone TWICE in the first three plays? Against the best red zone team in the league? That ain’t on the defense.
    What happened in overtime again?

  22. Johnnyb612 says: Jul 3, 2010 5:15 PM

I really hate it when players start running their mouths like this. Their just setting themselves up for failure and the possibility of looking like a total dip if they come out and lay an egg. Not to mention all the pressure their putting on themselves, the team, and the coaches. Confidence is a good thing to have, but man, it’s not even the preseason yet. Just shut up and play football. He had better hope they dont get the injury bug this year. Of course that would only give him an excuse to back out of his prediction.

  23. funi says: Jul 3, 2010 5:17 PM

Look at the Fudgepacker def last seaon:
    31 allowed to Cincy
    38 allowed to Minn
    38 allowed to Tampa!?!
    37 allowed to Pitt
    51 allowed to Az
The packers def has more holed in it than swiss cheese. As for the Super bowl, 9 wins at the most!

  24. SkolVikings says: Jul 3, 2010 5:22 PM

McCarthy’s teams go from phat to flat every season. 13-3 to 6-10 to 11-5. I’ll give em 8-8 this year & a missed playoffs this year. Chicago makes more strides than GB does in the North.

  25. MNFANINAZ says: Jul 3, 2010 5:42 PM

These things always work out well…
    Chicago sweeps Green Bay

  26. WestcoastPackerFan says: Jul 3, 2010 5:43 PM

Yeah funi breaks it down correctly. The Packers gave up 123 points in their 11 wins and 256 points in the 6 losses. Every game they lost they gave up more than 30 points. The defense made a lot of big plays, Woodson was awesome but when it came to actually making a big time stop they couldn’t do it. While I would not be surprised if we had a drop off in wins this year, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Minnesota did too. Last year was the perfect year for them. Favre played perfect, and so many teams choked against them, i.e. San Fran, Baltimore especially. I would have liked to seen us bring in a veteran FA or two, but I understand Thompson’s way is through the draft, and if the players we have mature and don’t make the mental mistakes they did last year I can see the Pack making a run.

  27. Green n' Gold says: Jul 3, 2010 5:50 PM

They have as good a shot as anybody else. One of the top offenses in the league, good but not great defense yet; might be a year away though..special teams is still a weakness.

  28. DailyNorseman says: Jul 3, 2010 5:53 PM

The Packers might want to try winning their own division first. They won’t, but they can at least give it a try first before declaring themselves to be something special.
And sure, their secondary might rebound this year. . .if a 35-year old corner that was slowing down to begin with can make a complete recovery from tearing just about everything in his knee and they can find a pair of safeties that can cover anyone. Oh, and somebody other than Clay Matthews, Jr. figures out how to generate a pass rush.
The Packer defense looks great against the Clevelands and Detroits of the world. . .put them against a team with a legitimate NFL offense, and they’ve got nothing.
It’s going to be fun watching the Minnesota offense shred them twice again this season.

Cause TT never signs any impact FAs, he is too cheap to do anything but draft and he sucks at drafting. Seriously look at the 4 years Chili and Spielman have been in charge of the Vikings,
    2006
TT drafts Hawk #5 overall YIKES!!!
    MN drafts Greenway #17 NICE!!!
    2007
    TT’s 1st round pick=Justin Harrell (speechless)
    MN’s 1st round pick=Adrian Peterson (ROY, AllPro)
    2008
TT trades its 1st round pick for someone named Jordy Nelsson
MN trades its 1st round pick for Jarred Allen (All Pro)
    2009
TT drafts PJ Raji #1 overall ???
MN drafts Percy Harvin (ROY) #22 overall WOO!!
So when you look at all the ProBowlers that the Vikes sign as free agents and also draft then look at TT well, no wonder the Packers are where they are.

Normally, it would be a great accomplishment to build a team up to a playoff team in 5 years… if said team was a perennial bottom dwelling loser. But Ted was handed the keys to a team that hadn’t had a losing season in over 15 years, and has had 2 losing seasons in 5 years.
His team has finished 3rd and 2nd the last 2 years in a 4 team division. Now, I realize that Rodgers puts up great fantasy numbers, and that the defense looks great stat wise. But fantasy stats don’t win actual games. And that #2 defense was definitely exposed against the Cards, and they did nothing to upgrade it.
Rodgers once again put up impressive numbers in that game as well, but his early pick set the tone of the game, and the late fumblepunt is what sealed his teams’ fate.
As for players not wanting to be in GB just because of the non appealing climate and lack of local attractiveness, that may be part of it, but not all. Pittsburgh is a cold, dump of a city, yet they have no trouble bringing in players. It’s got a lot more to do with the level of talent, and how the management treats its players. Look at it from a player’s perspective. A potential free agent has to say to himself, “Wow, if they just shit all over Brett Favre, they wouldn’t think twice about giving me the shaft.” I know I would.
GB fans all pretend, and some may genuinely believe, they are better off without Favre, but truth be told, this could be something that the Packers’ franchise never recovers from.

I never bought into that high ranking defense stuff. Defensive stats are unlike anything else. They’re greatly effected by what the offense does. We didn’t have a pass rush unless it was against a team like Dallas, where you had some turnstile tackles.
You’re dead on at the conclusion. The way Ted operates guys have to continue to step up every year. It puts a lot of pressure on the coaches and the management.
It would be a lot easier to put the blame on some free agent bust, wouldn’t it?

Evan, you should contribute here more often.
The Packers have a great defense that last season. Those that know football know the Packers had several defensive players out on Injured Reserve; 3 of which were CB’s. Despite the injuries the Green Bay Packers lost a close game in overtime.
In 2010 the Packers not only start healthy but they have added several great players that have further strengthened this very good team.
With arguably the best GM and one of the NFL’s finest coaching staffs this team is posed for some very good things for years to come.
Remember this was the youngest team in the NFL last season so the added experience will only help this very good team.

‘Sheepshit sounds right as long as you don’t look too close.
Chad Greenway? Who is he? Hasn’t he been hurt a lot? Didn’t he just miss a minicamp? AJ Hawk has played through a lot of injuries, that’s for sure. He’s been at all the otas, chopping wood, saying it was on him to step it up.
And Percy had a great year, but be looking for the sophmore slump. He’s Steve Slaton.
D lineman like Raji are never judged on their rookie year, but only a football man would know that.
Adrian Petersen?? Adrian Petersen?? Is there a bigger name, future HOFfer whose a bigger question mark? His career stats have gone down every year! What’s he gonna do this year, 1200 yards and 12 fumbles? Somebody needs to explain to that boy, he needs to get going, Chris Johnson just flew by, and there’s always a Jahvid Best comin’ up.
But Sheepdip does have me with Jared Allen. That man is a beast! Only one way to handle that.

Since 2005, only 12 teams in the NFL have a better record than Thompson’s Packers who went 42-38. Hardly chop liver, haters. Oh, and the Queens record during that same time frame is a whopping 45-35!!! But the Queens organization is miles ahead of the Packers, right? We traded away a choker for a QB, used the pick to draft a stud LB in Matthews and watched a young QB break records in only his second year as a starter!! But Ted Thompson doesn’t know what he’s doing right? Keep thinking that Queen fan, your fall will happen fast it will last a loooooooong time.

When someone on the Vikings predicts them as a Superbowl team, good for them. Let them battle it out on the field and we’ll see what happens. If they get there good for them, it hasn’t happened it quite some time. And if you expect them to win it well the last time I looked on my watch your team has not one ring on your finger. So when the Vikings win the big game you can start talking. But until then you have no reason to talk. But anyway you have yourself a fabulous day.

Now I remember why I don’t usually get involved in internet message board threads… yikes.
I am one of the most critical people of the Green Bay Franchise being a huge fan of the team. We wasted all of the Mike Sherman / Favre / Ahman Green years because Mike Sherman was an inept GM. The defense was terrible consistently and Sherman just counted on Brett to pull games out, which he would do just enough of to go 10-6 every year and keep his job. Name a Mike Sherman draft pick that had an extended career or went to another team and was successful. We had to make the change to Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy. I’m not 100 % sold yet either; Thompson has made many head scratching decisions, and whether with Favre or Rodgers the Pack just doesn’t seem to come up big in big games (ie Giants in 07, Cardinals last year.)
All that being said the NFL has really turned into a league where you need to put together a run where you go through a season relatively injury free, have solid QB play, and an opportunistic defense to win the Super Bowl. The Packers do fit the mold of a team that could make a run like that, but then again, on July 3rd, who doesn’t? Predicting the Super Bowl in July is beyond absurd, but I appreciate Nick Barnett’s passion to win, and that’s what I want out of my players.
    GO PACK GO.

I like the Vikes/Pack banter…….Good to see fans of a rival franchise bust balls……And it’s really funny to read…..But what I don’t get is the Vikes fans continual reference to Ted Thompson…As a partial observer, since when did the GM become such a point of signifigance?…….What you have in Minnesota, is a fan base that hated favre for a decade and a half, and now kisses his ass….. more or less sellouts……But if Vikes fans weren’t so damn redundant, i’d have never known who the Packers GM was………Seems silly, you kiss ass and then bitch about the Gm making a team….

Oh Goodness…….reading these posts makes me feel sorry for a lot of you. There must be a lot of basements with twin beds and xboxes set up there in MN.
Anyone that knows anything about football can see that both the Packers and the Vikings have really good teams. People, rip on each other all you want, but 12-4 and 11-5 are both stellar records for 2009. The vikes played one more game than the pack did and that’s it. Brett is a great qb for weeks 1 through 16. After that, not so much. Unfortunately for whoever he is playing for, he has an uncanny knack of throwing games away. Saw it three years ago when he denied GB a super bowl trip by throwing a college-caliber pass against the Giants. He followed that up by stinking up the field for the jets against miami with the playoffs on the line. And finally, to follow that up, he throws a high-school caliber pass against us to send us to the super bowl and break the vikes hearts.
Regardless people, dont hate…..you both have great teams. The Pack as “up and comers” with an unbelievable young talent at QB and the vikes as the current division champs. It’s only too bad the vikes dont have a qb for the future as it would be a great rivalry to watch for the next decade. As it stands now, Id rather face the vikes than the packers. We already beat the vikings…..the packers? Im not so sure.

Not sure who he is a hero to. It is either that DB who intercepted AR to start the game, giving AZ all the momentum to start. Or if it was that Defensive who AR kicked the ball to for the TD and the win. I am sure AR is a hero in all their eyes.

Funny how opposing fans see what they want to see. The case from Green Bay begins with an elite young QB with plenty of offensive weapons. Add healthy veteran tackles to start the season and talented depth (e.g. Bulaga). This O will score.
The NFC’s top rated defense will improve in year 2 under Capers, and healthy young DB’s will play along two pro bowlers.
OK, Harris is probably done and GB would like 1 more LB.

3 years ago “Chili” was considered one of the worst head coaches in the NFL, now he is some kind of genius guru because the organization did a great job in talent acquirement. Yet in the biggest coaching game of his career with a 20 year vet QB he allows his team to get a 12 men in huddle penalty.
Another sweet chapter in Brett Favre’s post SB XXXI playoff choke record and the Viking choke legacy. That 1998 team was the best team I have ever seen for the record.
Don’t fret about that new stadium that is never coming by the way. I’m sure the LA Vikings will be as successful as the Minnesota, errrr, Los Angeles Lakers. Why did the Twins and UM Golden Gophers get new stadiums in downtown Minneapolis, but the Vikings can’t? Strange that such a beloved organization with a history of winning can’t get out of the Big Inflatable Toilet.
If you do win the divison, which is plausible given your quality team, it must be sobering to know that at some point, either late in the season or in the playoffs, the Viking magic will happen again, and some bizarre tragedy will cheat you of another Superbowl or NFC title game.

At the very least the Packers are capable of representing the North Division more effectively than the Vikings did last year. They have a built-in loser clause with Favre. Oh and he traded for Ryan Grant (maybe no the greatest running back but he sure protects the ball, only runningback in the NFL not to have a fumble with so many carries, unlike Adrian Peterson) and gave up a 6th round pick only. But well I guess Ted sucks even though he’s brought in all these players and has reassembled this roster from when Mike Sherman destroyed the roster. The only players that reamin from him are Al Harris, Nick Barnett, Mark Tauscher, Chad Clifton, and Donald Driver. But according to you guys he has done nothing, who am i to tell you your wrong?

Really, do you know anyone outside the state of Minnesota? Lots of people believe Saints were the better team. They played a bad game that one night, but that was one game, one night. All season long the Saints were better than the Vikings — a better record, the #1 offense, more takeaways by the defense, most points scored in the league, QB had highest passer rating, set NFL accuracy record, and threw for the most touchdowns, the Saints won 13 games in A ROW, and oh yeah, they won the Super Bowl. Can’t wait for September 9.

  106. Tigershark88 says: Jul 6, 2010 4:28 PM

A couple things to surprisingly dumb Vikings fans posting here:
    1. “Winning your division first” is not a prerequisite to winning the Super Bowl. Knowledgeable football fans would know this.
    2. Despite your magical and often lucky season last year, you still accomplished nothing more than Green Bay, you lost in the playoffs to an inferior team on a fluke play.
    3. The Packers have won 12 NFL Championships. The Vikings have won zero. So stop with the trash talk because you managed to win one more game than GB did last year.
    4. The Packers were 4-12 with Brett Favre at QB the year before McCarthy took over. The Favre Apologists always leave that one out of their arguments.
    5. Favre quit after the Giants loss. The Packers didnt force him out.
    6. Last year was the first year of the new defense. GB will be better this year. Giving up points in a pass-happy league against the best passing attacks is going to happen with the new rules being enforced they way they are.
    7. Favre, like Marino, will one day lose the zip on his arm. It will happen in game 10 of this season.
    8. Last year was Minnesota’s best chance at a SB. You will not win it this year.
    9. Barnett ALWAYS says that. Would you want a player on your team who went into the season saying anything less? “Uh, we dont expect to win the SB this year..uh, I just be in it for a paycheck.” (d*amn, Vikings fans are dumb.)
    10. The Packers record since Rodgers was drafted:
    4-12 with Favre
    8-8 with Favre
    13-3 with Favre
    6-10 with Rodgers
    11-5 with Rodgers
    ?-? with Rodgers
An 8-8 finish and Rodgers 1st three years equal Favre’s LAST three with GB. I think they’ll go 12-4 this year.
    11. Of the Packers’ 12 NFL Championships teams, Brett Favre played QB for exactly ONE of them. Get over the Brett Favre gay love worship. The guy’s won as many rings as Trent Dilfer has.
Good luck Vikings fans. Last year was your year. This year, injuries, and declining O LINE, and a QB who has run out of miracles will take their tolls.

Last year was the Saints’ year. It wasn’t the Vikings’ anymore than it belonged to the Packers, Steelers or Rams. The only difference is, those teams have all won it before. The Vikings obviously have not.
So, I don’t know what you’re thinking. Last year wasn’t their year. This year isn’t either. They have never HAD a “year”, and they likely never will. They will, however, continue to claim their paper championship trophies for the remainder of this (and every future) offseason.

No. Super Bowl appearances, playoff appearances, division titles et al don’t mean anything. They are pity-party consolation prizes and nothing more.
As I’ve said before, each year, only ONE team wins. The rest all lose, and they all lose equally. The only difference between them is the draft order. The Saints obviously were last year’s one successful team. The Packers, Vikings, Colts, Rams, and everyone else all tied for last. So there’s nothing good for either of us to say about last season.
Your regular season record doesn’t matter. If you can’t get it done when it matters most, you have ultimately lost. No better example of this than the ’07 Patriots. They were a very good team. That doesn’t matter, though, because they lost.
Now, back to topic. As you very well know, the Vikings bear the dubious distinction of being one of a few teams that have ALWAYS lost.
The Packers do not. They’ve won more than anyone, in fact, but you all like to pretend most of those didn’t happen. Who can blame you, after all.
So, just for fun, we’ll ignore when the league was ACTUALLY formed, and do it your way and go back only 40 years. During that period, the Vikings have lost every single year they’ve played. The Packers have at least won once. It isn’t much, but that alone still makes them the better team.
