Titans’ Lavelle Hawkins gets the message on off-field conduct

The last few weeks haven’t gone well for the Tennessee Titans off the field, with quarterbacks Vince Young and Chris Simms both getting arrested.

Another Titans player, receiver Lavelle Hawkins, has gotten the message about how to conduct himself off the field.

I am not going to put myself in a bad situation like that, where I am going to jeopardize my teammates or this organization, or my chance,” Hawkins told the Tennessean.

Last summer one of Hawkins’ fellow receivers, Chris Davis, was having a good offseason and looked likely to make the team, but he was released after a DUI arrest. Hawkins says there’s no concern about that with him.

“So getting in trouble -- I don’t drink, I don’t smoke dope -- I won’t be involved in anything like that, I can tell you,” Hawkins said.

Heading into a weekend in which far too many people get behind the wheel after drinking at Fourth of July festivities, that’s a message other NFL players -- and everyone else -- could stand to hear.
