Former NFL journeyman catching on in Canada at age 33

For most NFL running backs, 30 is the new 65.

For former 49ers, Panthers, and Falcons running back Jamal Robertson, being three years on the wrong side of 30 has done nothing to slow him down.

Robertson jumped to the CFL in 2008. Now, at age 33, he’s excelling.

On Sunday, Robertson rushed for a career-high 168 yards on 11 carries in the B.C. Lions’ 25-10 win over the Edmonton Eskimos.

So why is Robertson thriving at such an advanced age? He hasn’t endured the wear and tear of other older tailbacks. During his five seasons in the NFL, he touched the ball only 62 times. Some running backs handle the ball that many times in only two games.

Though Robertson’s age likely prevents him from making a return to the NFL, he’s doing just fine in the CFL at an age when most NFL tailbacks have left the game of football for good.
