Pittsburgh columnist thinks Steelers are a six-win team

W. Colon.jpgA Steelers offseason that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons has officially spooked Pittsburgh.

A column by Gene Collier in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that we mentioned in one-liners Sunday details the damage, from Big Ben’s suspension to Santonio Holmes’ departure to season-ending injuries to Willie Colon and Limas Sweed.  And like so much offseason news, there has been an overreaction to this avalanche of negative headlines.

“They were a 9-win team a year ago, with the quarterback generally
upright and relatively upstanding,” Collier writes.  “They were probably an 8-win team with
the departure of Santonio Tweeter-dumb Holmes, probably a 7-win team in
light of the formerly-upstanding quarterback’s four- to six-week
suspension. They look like maybe a 6-win team with Colon’s Achilles
unstrung.”

And that’s where the madness needs to stop.  First of all, the Steelers were no ordinary nine-win team.  They didn’t lose a game by two scores all season.  Luck and special teams knocked them down a few pegs.

Second, it’s a fallacy to believe each team starts over where the last group left off.  The Steelers are one of the very few organizations that start each season with an edge.  They have the talent and system to expect to compete.  They’ve dipped under .500 once since 1999 and still have a great quarterback that should be available for 12 games.

Look, I’ve been leading the Baltimore bandwagon.  The Ravens should be considered division favorites.  But they are slight favorites.

Vegas lists Pittsburgh as the sixth-most likely AFC team to make the Super Bowl with an over/under win total of nine, which sounds about right.

I’d still bet the over.  (You know, for entertainment purposes.)

Gene Collier is a hack who hopes to get attention by writing “man bites dog” stories. He is now officially on my “S” list.
    GO STEELERS!

I say they go 4-12. This is a team on the decline. They got the SB over the Seahawks thanks to the refs and everyone knows it. They won two SBs last decade and are still only the 3rd best team of that time behind the Patriots and the Colts.

I would agree with Sliva except the Steeler came undone down the stretch last season. This is a team that hasn’t improved in two seasons and with Roethlisberger’s absence coupled with some rustiness when he returns, the QB sitation is stable but is not going to be spectacular… I think this is a 9 win team again this season.

  5. Insomniac says: Jul 5, 2010 10:37 AM

I suppose they get no additional wins with the return of Troy Polamalu?

I still don’t get how “Baltimore should be the division favorites.”
The Bengals SWEPT the division last year. And even when they’ve had bad seasons, they always seem to have the Ravens’ number. The Ravens never seemed to be able to stop Ocho and Housh from getting in the end zone. Yes, Housh is gone… but the Ravens still got beat by the Bengals twice last year. And this year they have Antonio Bryant and Jermaine Gresham at tight end.
Okay, the Ravens got Boldin. Great. Is he better than Mark Clayton? Yes. But he’s not the jump-ball receiver that the Ravens needed for all of Flacco’s bullets that fly 5 feet over the receivers head. He’s not a deep threat for Flacco’s bombs. And he’s not going to help Flacco read defenses better and see the field any better.
The Bengals have to be the favorite to win the division. The Ravens did nothing to upgrade their corner position, and Ed Reed is no guarantee to be ready for the start of the season.(Ravens and Bengals play in Week 2)

  7. Tomthebombtracy says: Jul 5, 2010 10:48 AM

I think we’re about ready to find out what Mike Tomlin is made of!
Remember, like their SB 43 season, the Steelers were 6-2 at the halfway point last year. Then they lost five…..FIVE!…..games in a row including Oakand (at home) and K.C.
Much has been made of Tomlin’s contract status in Pittsburgh as the Steelers usually extend a coach so he’s not in a lame duck year…..unless he wants to be like Cowher.
I like Tomlin but I liked Jimmy Carter…until he actually got in office.

  10. Nick S. says: Jul 5, 2010 10:55 AM

Same defense that was ranked #1 against the pass, #2 against the run, and #1 total in 2008, playing against a third place schedule, and against the NFC South, there is no reason that this team should win less than 10-11 games. 10-11 AT LEAST.
All the talk about Ben being out for 4 games is like the end of the world, and when he comes back, he is just going to forget how to play?
Santonio Holmes hurts, sure, but honestly, he had 79 receptions for1248 yards, but Wallace is going to be able to at least come close to that. With the 4 game suspension, Wallace will finish 2010 with more yards than Holmes.
Fear not Steelers Nation, Pittsburgh WILL be making the playoffs this year.
As for the doofus that wrote that article, he has no business even writing for a Pittsburgh paper. Maybe he should move to Baltimore to write that crap!

  11. okonkwo21 says: Jul 5, 2010 10:55 AM

Gregg, I’m confused. Is this actually journalism, or propaganda? No other team in the NFL would get this kind of positive review after, by all accounts, one of the worst off-seasons in history.
Funny how you make NO mention of the AFC North championship team last year. So typical.

Behind just the Patriots you mean. The Colts had the refs help in that same year against the Steelers and Manning still couldn’t win. League even apologized after the game because that game should have been over when Polamalu intercepted him. It was hilarious. Manning is the greatest choke of all time behind McNabb.
Speaking of Troy…do they seem to be forgetting that the best defensive player is returning?

  14. Harm City Homer says: Jul 5, 2010 10:59 AM

That would be sweet, but very unlikley. The Steelers are an elite team not just a good one. Troy P missing games was a bigger deal last year than Big JenMJillicutty. They will be fine and in the mix for the playoffs as usual.
The Ravens are winning the SB this year though so better luck next year.

  15. kantnockdahustle89 says: Jul 5, 2010 10:59 AM

I agree with Habib that the Bengals are in fact the favorite in the division. The Ravens have corners that are decent but no where close to being able to cover Ocho/Bryant for an extended period of time. If the Ravens improve their pass rush they have a chance to take down the Bengals. With Benson likely missing some time and no star in the backfield they can try to take down the Bengals passing game. Palmer does get rattled at times so we will see how well he stands up this year.
The Bengals defense is also improved slightly because they actually have the same guys back from last year. I just dont know if its as good as the Ravens with or without Ed Reed. Hamlin is definitely capable to play safety in his place.

I am not a Steeler fan, but I disagree that they are a 6 win team. With Troy and Aaron Smith back, their defense should be near the top again, but I am not as confident in their offense (or special teams for that matter).
For all you Bengal fans, you have a fair argument about not being picked to with the division, although I am not sure why you believe Antonio Bryant is that good.

  26. LighTsouT says: Jul 5, 2010 11:39 AM

    @habibfromnewdehli:
Bolden isn’t a jump ball receiver? he’s 6’2 and most corners are between 5’9-5’11. 3 inches before having to jump is a huge advantage.. as for NOT being a deep-threat, they also added Dante Stallworth which, if he’s retained even half his speed, will still be one of the fastest receivers in the league.
On defense, I’d take Landry/Hamlin (or Reed if he’s there) over Roy “I get burned on every pass play I’m ever on the field for” Williams and Gibril “I got cut EVEN by the Raiders” Wilson (only two safeties who’s named I recognized on the Bengals roster, so I assumed those were going to be the starters), so you CANNOT criticize any secondary having those two guys starting at safety. Washington and Foxworth were also beat up (physically) for most of last season so their corners can’t be completely called out just yet. Joseph/Hall are a solid tandem though.
With all that said, as for the division winner, to be honest, I can care less who does win the division. But the Ravens are definitely looking like a better team.
p.s. Antwan Odom returning to the Bengals after his injury last season which will definitely boost their pass-rush as he was leading the league in sacks before his injury.

There is no clear cut favorite. Personally, I think all three will make the playoffs, unless one or more of the three have multiple, serious in-season injury issues (which is distinctly possible-see 2009 Steelers).

As a Bengals fan I like it that we are not favored to win the division again. I don’t want my team to loose their chip on their shoulder. I think with a top 5 defense and an improved passing game, we should contend for the division and make a push in the playoffs.
I am sorry Pittsburgh fans, but your team is lucky to win 8 games this year. Your offensive line is not dominate like it has been in the past. You had the league’s best OL during your Super Bowl runs, and the present line is not even close to that level. I think it is now the worst in the North. With the loss of Colon it has only gotten worse. Ben is going to be running for his life this season, and Mendenhall is going to have a hard time finding running lanes. If your defense can stay healthy, they will stay in a lot of games, but they just don’t have the offense to take them over the time.

To Habib and everyone else with the black and orange glasses on, ask yourself this question and answer it honestly. …
How would that Bengals team of 2009 measure up to either the Steelers or the Ravens of 2008? Not very well, if you are being honest.
The Bengals won the division by default…because both the Steelers and the Ravens had subpar seasons.
Oh, and don’t fret about the Steelers being on the decline because they are getting old. You have to understand how the Steelers system works. We always have our young guys waiting in the wings. The Steelers mentor them for several years and then they are ready to set the world on fire.
Ben will be fine. Brett Favre didn’t even go to training camp with a brand new team last year and the Vikings went to the playoffs. Ben is no rookie. I think he knows what to do.

As a Steeler fan I am jacked that no one is picking us! That means we are going to do great this year!! Remember when we were the 6th seed a few years ago and ended up beating every team in our path on the road and winning the Super Bowl? Remember two years ago when we had the most “difficult” schedule in the entire NFL? Well we won the freaking Super Bowl again folks! And we did it with the so-called “worst offensive line in the league” and absolutely no running game. We had the “easiest” schedule last year and finished 9-7 and did not make the cut. Same thing happened the year after the Super Bowl 40 win. The Steelers are only good when they have a chip on their shoulder and their backs against the wall. They have both this season.
Pittsburgh has a knack for replacing guys too. Mike Wallace has the potential to be even better than Holmes so I won’t miss Santonio. I see the Steelers returning to a power run game this year anyway. The defensive backfield will be improved and if we keep everyone relatively healthy (Polamalu especially) we will challenge for ring #7 this season. Sorry Ravens fans but I’d be scared to death if I was you. Big Ben will be hoisting his 3rd Lombardi in the very near future, just watch;)

The Steelers are seeking to sign Flozell Adams, that’s a classy match made in heavens. They may or may not re-sign Ike Taylor. No one knows if Troy is 100%. Lucky number S7even is going to miss at least four games. Santonio has been jettisoned to the um, Jets. So what are the Steelers going to win with? Their looks? 6 wins seems a bit extreme but they’ll certainly be in that area of wins.

funi commented last week that the steelers would go 115-5, which I think may be a little difficult.
Realistically, the steelers are always in the mix, and writing them off as a subpar team is pretty ridiculous. They benefit from a week schedule during Roethlisberger’s suspension, and the defense is still the steelers strong point. The lack of a pass rush in certain situations last year exposed the secondary sans Polamalu.
Defense will still be good to great. Running game will be adequate, as will be passing game. The team knows how to win and play in the division.
I hope they go 4-12 with all their wins coming before Roethlisberger returns, but I’m not betting on that.
I will bet funi a million dollars that the Steelers don’t go 115-5 in 2010.

  44. ImAlwaysWrong says: Jul 5, 2010 1:17 PM

In the 7 years that Marvin has been your coach he has yet to win a playoff game. In the handful of years that Carson has been a “topnotch” QB in the NFL he has yet to win a playoff game.
I realize that the Bengals swept the Ravens in the regular season. Big deal. Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. Bottom line is that they pissed down their collective legs and shit themselves in the playoffs losing to a Jets team that had to back into the off season.
I am a Ravens fan. And for all these pundits that say that the Squealers are dead, I will believe it when I am there to shovel the dirt on the casket and then bury garlic and silver with it. Keep disrespecting the Steerlers. Its the kind of nonsense that makes their ignorant egos make them want to win. I, on the other hand, prefer to look at them like a big-ass hornets nest. I don’t go poking sticks if I can avoid it.
For you Bengal fans, when you win a playoff game start talking. Otherwise Habib and others STFU. The Browns fans I won’t even bother with. It’s like beating a baby harp seal in the head with a bat.

Laxer you are a fool if you think the Steelers have not had one of the most dominate lines the past decade, which led to two rings and helped them dominate the division. In the last SB, yes it was not as great as the previous ones, but the Steelers used to be able to get 3 yards a pop at will. Now there is no surge at the LOS, and Ben was hit on a regular basis when he dropped back. It will only be worse this year. You are only go as far as your defense takes you.
Great lines equal great teams, but it is the specialists that get all the press.

  65. blester01 says: Jul 5, 2010 4:53 PM

Blitzburgh, you are correct. The 2009 Bengals were not that spectacular team since they are team in transition. Like the Browns, we have quietly built a good O-line and a solid defense (the winning formula). Our line was in transition last year with 4 of the 5 starters in new spots. If you know the game, it takes about a year for a line to gel. So we should be in better shape out the gates this year.
The Ravens are going to be tough, but they still have some weaknesses. Bengals have their weak spots as well (I don’t think they are going to win the SB, but they may contend). The Steelers have more holes than they typically have due to age, recent poor drafting, lack of depth, and injuries and it will affect their number of wins this year.

“In the last SB, yes it was not as great as the previous ones, but the Steelers used to be able to get 3 yards a pop at will.”
You do know that the worst rushing offense in the league last year averaged 3.5?

  67. DirtDawg55 says: Jul 5, 2010 5:54 PM

They will get 6 wins …. on their way to 10, 11 or 12.

Mr. Gregg Rosenthal-You are an idiot! A true Steeler Fan does not talk like that. Ben was not charged how dare you judge him unless you are so perfect which I doubt!!! And calling Santonio names is ridiculous, you loser-yeah now look whose getting called names how does it feel? You are a terrible reporter, the Steelers will be fine, you Jerk!!! Watch this season and learn and keep your big fat mouth SHUT. GO STEELERS!!!! Sincerely, Marreen Majer P.S. I’d love to get a reply from such a LOSER!

  71. kornonthekolb says: Jul 5, 2010 9:59 PM

So they lose to the Browns, Raiders, and Chiefs WITH Rapelisberger and now these Steeler fans think they will be better with Leftwich for a third of the season? Don’t forget that their defense was awful last year. Harrison got pushed all over the field by the Browns.

  72. Beezer says: Jul 5, 2010 10:18 PM

Rosenthal you are a homer just like Florio. You posted how the writers at PFT felt Colon was one of the most underrated right tackles in the NFL. Florio then goes and says that the Steelers offensive line is the weak link so losing a starter for the season is actually a good thing because the backup is probably better. God forbid somebody predicts a losing season for Pittsburgh and you have to write this garbage.
The Steeler’s lost to some terrible teams last season and did not deserve to make it to the playoffs. I can’t believe that NBC actually keeps you around. MDS should write more because he is by far the best and most unbiased member of PFT.

  73. majer says: Jul 5, 2010 11:06 PM

  74. majer says: Jul 5, 2010 11:16 PM

Anyone that doesn’t have Baltimore on top of the AFC North this year is delusional (and by that, I mean they’re probably all Steelers fans).
You simply can’t have an offseason like they have had and still expect to be successful. It doesn’t happen. They could own every ref in the league and still only go 7-9 with all the problems they have had.
The Ravens should also enjoy it while they still can though. Starting in 2011, the Browns will take that division by storm, and they won’t give it up easily either. They have the talent. They’re a little raw right now, but give them a year, and then watch out..

Steelers will have a better record without the idiot. MAYBE he’ll win 4 games tops when/if he comes back. He’s “F’d” up in the head.
Thanks for that riveting social commentary.
The Steelers don’t know when Ben will be back and have to prepare to win without him. But it’s good that so many people feel the Steelers are underdogs. In fact, I hope the Steelers are considered underdogs for every game this season though I doubt that will happen. It can only add another incentive to win for the Steelers. Someone in the Bleacher Report think the Steelers will be 13 & 3. Very optimistic but as equally valid as the numbers each of you pull out of some dark orifice.
    GO STEELERS!

I would bet you if i knew you. It’s a little safe I admit, but it’s the obvious pick. Baltimore is the only team in that division that significantly improved this offseason. How is that delusional?

  82. funi says: Jul 6, 2010 7:43 PM

misprint of 115 wins.. 11 wins I meant to say. Most of the Steeler games will be 17-13, 14-10, witht he defense carrying them. For some reason people still pick hte Pats who have not win a Syper Bowl since 2004 and 2 of them were won by the KICKER, and Dallas who has 1 playoff win in 14 years to always be there! Cincy has nto been to the playoffs in back to back years since the 80′s so expect 6 wins there and Boldin in Balt is good for missing 4-5 games yearly..

Everyone is entitiled to an opinion, it’s just suprising when a “hometown” journalist like Collier gets lost in the dark cloud and can’t find some optimism.
Teams (actually fans of teams) should have learned by now… NEVER sleep on the Steelers. This team will respond when it’s being dissed and it’s back is against the wall.
The people who think 2-time SB winning QB BR7 won’t show up week #6 and play with a chip on his shoulder for the rest of the season, including playoffs, are in a cloud of their own.
Steelers will finish 10-6 or better in 2010.
