Rumors about JaMarcus and codeine had been around for a while

nfl_russell.jpgFor the record, we’d never heard any rumors about former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell and codeine-rich cough syrup.

Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group had.

McDonald points out via Twitter, “Wish I had a dollar for every time I got an e-mail or a
tip about Russell
and prescription cough syrup

McDonald wisely resisted writing anything about it absent proof, since doing so would have opened him up for a defamation suit that could have yielded enough cash to continue Russell’s supply of codeine-rich cough syrup indefinitely into the future.

But now McDonald and the rest of us are free to speculate about the true nature of Russell’s lethargy addiction — the possible addiction to a substance that induces lethargy.

Raider fans have been joking about his sizzurp addiction since around the beginning of last season.

  2. Play4Blood says: Jul 5, 2010 7:49 PM

I was hoping for reports of an overdose, but this will do.

  3. hokieZ says: Jul 5, 2010 7:50 PM

Now I know why JaMarcus wants to go to the CFL!

  4. bigrig says: Jul 5, 2010 7:52 PM

Even the Vick groupies are gonna have a rough time coming up with a defense for this guy.
Charges probably won’t stick this time, but with the free time and cash it’s just a matter of time.

  6. Tabdanger says: Jul 5, 2010 7:56 PM

In Oakland it is known he has a thing for two things. Jewelery and “Lean” or “Bo”which iare street names for this codeine syrup concoction he preferred to drink. It’s a mix..It’s unfortunately a popular drug.

  7. Bob S. says: Jul 5, 2010 7:59 PM

he had a persistant sore throat.

  8. downwithdansnyder says: Jul 5, 2010 7:59 PM

Gee. Wonder why he was always so LAZY? IS this just the off-label “weed”? Passes the drug tests I bet. LOL.

As a rule, it seems most MV groupies don’t post support of JaMarcus.

    Charges won’t stick bigrig?
Getting busted in an undercover drug sting can’t be shaken like an annoying ex or something. He is done, all the baggage he has plus an impending suspension? The teams must be chomping at the bit.

  13. osnap305 says: Jul 5, 2010 8:08 PM

I wanna Tom Martinez excuses this time.
Betcha Al Davis got JaMarcus hooked on that codeine, eh Tom?

    Hello, PharMarsust Russell.

  15. Humboldt420 says: Jul 5, 2010 8:11 PM

Heard through the grapevine Alabama beat reporters knew about this but could not get anyone to go on the record.
Apparently, some Louisiana sports writers caught wind of it too but couldn’t write anything because there was no proof.
    Now there is…

  16. eik01 says: Jul 5, 2010 8:11 PM

getting busted for possession isn’t proof enough?

  17. texansMike says: Jul 5, 2010 8:13 PM

It was a marketing bust. He he goes through rehab, a team might believe they have solved his work ethic issues.
    Buffalo, here he comes.

  18. TryTheVeal says: Jul 5, 2010 8:17 PM

It’s ALL the Raiders fault…….If they had just paid him minimum wage like he eventually will earn, instead of all those millions. This would have never happened and he would have tried harder….

  19. PurpleRaid12 says: Jul 5, 2010 8:23 PM

So he’s friends with Johnny Jolly?

  20. GeneraI Muck says: Jul 5, 2010 8:24 PM

    He’s not a football player, he’s a gangsta!!
Raiders got jacked for MILLIONS!! LOL

  21. SethGecko says: Jul 5, 2010 8:31 PM

You really think that a guy who got around $35 Million Dollar signing bonus is going to end up working for Minimum Wage? Im no Russell fan, or Raiders fan, but the guy is set for life, unless MC Hammer is his Finacial Advisor. Also i know you were joking, but just saying.

  22. smo05d says: Jul 5, 2010 8:35 PM

I don’t think this arrest is going to hurt JaMarcus. It’s only going to help him: now he can go to teams in the future and say “see! I’m not actually lazy and my performance isn’t my fault, I was just addicted to codeine! I’ll go to rehab and it’ll be all better! “

  23. Buck Stallion says: Jul 5, 2010 8:42 PM

Is anyone else wondering about the nature of this arrest IN HIS HOME?
I’m not an expert in this kind of thing, but I thought if you’re just using a drug, you pretty much don’t have to worry about getting busted in your home.
I can’t imaging he was selling it. He can’t be out of $ already could he?

  24. Jon Evans says: Jul 5, 2010 8:44 PM

Incase RyanT the Pharmacist runs off to this page. i am going to haunt him with the fact that I know more about his own profession aparently than he does.
You can’t buy CODEINE based products over the counter in the United State?
    Robitussin DAC
    bye bye.

  25. Raiderguy says: Jul 5, 2010 8:48 PM

wha…I thought Martinez thought he was ruined by the raiders!

  26. FumbleNuts says: Jul 5, 2010 8:54 PM

    This statement is “Classic” Florio!

  27. Ratpee says: Jul 5, 2010 9:17 PM

Rumors about JaMarcus and codeine had been around for a while
You sure it’s not—- rumors about Jamarcus and coco–puffs had been around a while?

  28. RyanT. says: Jul 5, 2010 9:19 PM

    Jon Evans,
You really are that stupid aren’t you?
Do me a favor moron, take that bottle of Robitussen DAC and look at the back label…
What is the pct of codein in it?
    3.5% or less!
So, I know you’re no rocket scientist, but do you really think J-Russ got busted for posession of Robitussen?
Or more likely did he have the real prescription strength codeine cough syrup?

  29. Ryan35 says: Jul 5, 2010 9:24 PM

Just so everyone knows the facts, that RyanT guy said Codeine, he never said codeine based products as Jon Evans wants you to believe. Therefore RyanT is 100% correct not Jon Evans.
    bye bye

  30. RyanT. says: Jul 5, 2010 9:26 PM

    Robitussin DAC is highly controlled.
For example, Jon Evans claims to have attended Rutgers University.
Which is in the state of New Jersey.
New Jersey only allows someone to purchase 4 ounces of Robitussin DAC a year!!!
4 ounces! This is what Jon Evans is latching on to?

  31. Dr. Steve says: Jul 5, 2010 9:34 PM

I waiting for Tony Dungy to come forward to explain away Russell’s codeine habit as an “error in judgement”, mentor him into using Red Bull for his lethargy addiction and to squeeze some NFL team into giving JaMarcus a high paying backup QB position.
C’mon Tony, what’s keeping you? JaMarcus needs you to fix this error in judgement for him.

  32. DEMOLITION says: Jul 5, 2010 9:38 PM

  35. Jon Evans says: Jul 5, 2010 9:57 PM

As I posted in the other article. My statement regarding OTC Codeine cough syrup was in response to your statement (and others) saying
It had nothing to do with JaMarcus Russell.

  36. Mooch says: Jul 5, 2010 9:59 PM

BBD…is this another example of the Future of the NFL?

“Just so everyone knows the facts, that RyanT guy said Codeine, he never said codeine based products as Jon Evans wants you to believe. Therefore RyanT is 100% correct not Jon Evans.”
Anyone can read his statements and see that they refered directly to me buying OTC CODEINE Cough Syrup.
nice try. We all know you people will attempt to spin words and meanings all over the place to try and make your self look correct. Anyway, Destroyed

I love it when someone gets busted for something, some media reporters say” oh thats been knwon for a while.” Noone ever reported it when he was doing it. If they had suspision of it, should have reported it to the authorities! What’s next, a player or coach gets a DUI and they report he is known to drink alot???

  39. "Coach"Davis says: Jul 5, 2010 10:31 PM

    Jon Evans,
Jon Evans the fake “lawyer” meet RyanT. the real pharmacist. Codeine is never available without a prescription!
There it is Jon where does he say Codeine based products?
    Again you are wrong.

  45. Chiefs2010 says: Jul 5, 2010 11:06 PM

you dudes need to chill out about the legality of codeine…
either way, the guys a blockhead.. and more than likely the police were targeting him for more serious stuff

  46. Ryan35 says: Jul 5, 2010 11:30 PM

by the way jon these were youre lasted posted words before Ryan T said codeine can not be purchased without a prescription.
The point is I am better looking than you and I have done more than you in less amount of time which boils your blood. Oh wait, that wasnt the point… the Point is, They arent putting out undercover investigations into Codeine unless its EXTREMELY high amounts and for selling, not consumption.
So it makes sense that he was saying Codeine and not Codeine based products, since that was the last thing you referred too.

  47. Ryan35 says: Jul 5, 2010 11:56 PM

I personally think Jon Evans should now be known as Barry Horrowitz, because he is constantly patting himself on the back.(not sure of the spelling but he use to wrestle for the WWE many years ago.)

The best part about every thread on this site is it proves that Jon Evans has a severe case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He can look it up to see for sure, but too narcissistic to do so. He can see if he has 5 factors that diagnose it (he has 7 of them).
Go ahead Jon, now say you are a brain surgeon or rocket scientist. Change your name again and we all know you and what who you are. PATHETIC!
Or as you like to say Jon Evans/boggle….big f-ing boggle.

  50. Tinbender says: Jul 6, 2010 1:29 AM

This does explain one play last year when JaMarcus was trying to evade the rush, and took about three minutes to do a 360 in the pocket. I’d never seen anything quite like that!
By the way “DelayOfGame”, were you referring to JaMarcus or Jon Evans?

  51. east96street. says: Jul 6, 2010 1:54 AM

He’ll go to rehab, sign with the Eagles and win the Ed Block Courage Award by a “unanimous” vote.

  52. Drat says: Jul 6, 2010 2:10 AM

Nothing lower than Purple Drank. Cripes, Jamarcus, you’re a millionaire, get your narcotic hit from a “respectable” source, that Purple Drank will just turn your spleen and prostate purple as purple can be. Cripes, a millionaire on the Drank. Will wonders ever cease?

  53. DEMOLITION says: Jul 6, 2010 3:44 AM

Barry horrowitz. Haha. Remember iron mike sharpe

  54. sharkattack says: Jul 6, 2010 4:46 AM

Codeine is %100 illegal in the United States without a prescription. Although I am clean now, I was a pain-killer addict for 5 years. My choice drug was Oxy Contin, but at times when nothing was around I would try to find a substitute. Codeine would have been great, and I spent many a evening reading about its legal status. In canada you can buy Tylenol 4’s otc (which contains a low does of codeine,) but that’s about it. As for the United States, I believe it’s a schedule 2 controlled substance, meaning it is available only with a prescription.
oh before I forget I have a legit question for PFT readers; Can anyone give me, or link me to, the stats for Jruss’s best game with the Raiders? I think that would be interesting to see. How about Ryan Leaf?

  55. papertiger says: Jul 6, 2010 5:44 AM

  57. TheDPR says: Jul 6, 2010 6:52 AM

Cough syrup with codeine is good stuff when you have a cold and can’t sleep because of it. I can’t imagine any possible reason for liking that crap when you’re healthy, though.

  58. Mooch says: Jul 6, 2010 8:04 AM

Pharma…something else Jon Evans knows nothing about. Surprise, since he is actually a pharmacist who graduated from Rutgers.
Around noon he’ll try and say he’s intentionally being wrong as some part of a behavioral experiment, because he’s a psychiatrist who graduated from Rutgers.
And he ought to know about what they can and cannot sell, because he majored in the Law System at Rutgers.
But you are just picking on him.
    The end.
    Thanks for playing.
Jon Evans has the same record of being right as Sarah Palin. Zero.

Q: When is $35 million dollars not REALLY $35
    million dollars?
A: When you are incredibly stupid.
When BrownEyedDrivel and his co-defendants scream “but he rich!” as some sort of idiotic defense, what their pea-brains fail to fathom is this : these guys don’t REALLY have that kind of money, ESPECIALLY with the robber-barons in Washington we now have in charge (not to mention the family and posse payments AS WELL as lawyers, agents, etc).
Russell will be like Vick in a couple of years, that is, facing bankruptcy…bet on it…

  64. Mooch says: Jul 6, 2010 9:48 AM

If I made $35mm to play a game, and play it as badly as Jemarcus did, I would not quibble with paying the taxes on it.
Think about it, since the government hands that money right over the Big Pharma, Jemarcus was subsidizing his own codeine purchases.
It’s econ 101, dude. You get it back on the back end.

  65. jva says: Jul 6, 2010 10:09 AM

  66. blacktoothgrin says: Jul 6, 2010 10:37 AM

I always said JaSyrupus wasn’t the biggest bust ever because at least he wasn’t a drug addict like Ryan Leaf. At least Leaf had a pain killer addiction because of an injury and it was years after he was out of the league before he got busted. JaSyrupus is out of the league what, 2-3 months and he is addicted to cough syrup? He is officially, hands down the biggest bust ever.

  67. bluestree says: Jul 6, 2010 11:14 AM

“At least Leaf had a pain killer addiction because of an injury…..”
A little pet peeve of mine. People making excuses for addicts because they got hooked on something they were prescribed.
Millions of people are prescribed pain killers every day and don’t get addicted.
When a friend’s kid (who was an oxycontin addict) got busted with cocaine, he made a big deal about how his kid would never do coke, he was just going to trade it for pills.
