Hines Ward likes being written off

H. Ward2.jpgHines Ward, a rare constant in the Steelers passing game, notices a trend with preseason predictions.

“It seems like every year we won the Super Bowl, nobody gave us a chance
to win the Super Bowl, and when everybody thought we were going to win
it, we didn’t make the playoffs,” Ward told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The same newspaper called the Steelers a six-win team in a ridiculous column a few days earlier.  Ward will use that as motivation, in addition to all the questions about how much longer he wants to play.

“People are so quick to bury us
and put us in an old folks’ home like we can’t play,” Ward said. “I still caught 95
balls [in 2009]. How can you explain that? Next year if I only catch 40
balls then you have a legitimate story to write.”

With Santonio Holmes off the team, the Steelers need Ward to be a high volume receiver once again.  We’re not putting him in the old folks home yet.

Kind of a bold statement Rosenthal… that it was “ridiculous column”… they very well could be a 6 win team.. as could any team in the NFL at this point…. so to say that a column predicting 6 wins for anyone at this point is “ridiculous” is crazy.. because at this point, any team could be a 6 win team due to injuries, bad luck, bad habits, bad karma…. So I would have to say that this article is “ridiculous”

  8. JimmySmith says: Jul 7, 2010 9:56 AM

If Hines could catch as many balls as he throws cheap shots, yes, he would be a productive receiver.
But with his rapist QB on the sidelines for 6 weeks, who is going to get him the ball?
6 wins is realistic, is it to much to hope for 3 or 4?

  9. Steel Dahn Sahth says: Jul 7, 2010 9:56 AM

It’s simply wishful thinking that the steelers are done. Just look at history. Not just the 6 SBs, but the winning percentage in the SB era. The steelers have a just feww less division championships than Cincy, Cleveland, Oilers/Titans, Jaguars, Ravens, and anyone ever in their division…… COMBINED!!
I remember when theuir secondary was done. Up steps a kid from USC with long hair. I remember when the feared LB corps was done, up steps some NFL journeyman named Harrison and some kid named Woodley. I remember when the Bus was washed up with noone to step in. Up steps some undrafted fast Willie guy that didn’t even start in college. And as Ward gets old, up steps Wallace. The steelers are not a franchise, they are a program. They draft players that perfectly fit their role. No they’re not sending 8 to the probowl every year, nor are they ever going to be fantasy stat stars, but the program will move on, and will continue to win, as it always has, since Chuck Noll turned the franchise into a program 40 years ago.

Six wins? Dont they have the best o-line in football. Blue collar q-back. 2 corners ranked up there with best tandam of all time. looks like they are ready to unlesh hell.

  11. js136202 says: Jul 7, 2010 9:59 AM

The steelers didn’t excel because people wrote them off, they excelled because they had “talent.” Their defense is still top-notch, it’s just hard to figure out how they’ll score points.

  12. jj jones says: Jul 7, 2010 10:03 AM

I remember when the Steelers offensive line was old and washed up and nobody stepped up. Not a good thing when your QB the first month and a half is Brittle Byron Leftwich.

  13. steelersmichele says: Jul 7, 2010 10:16 AM

He’s right. Every year we were picked to win it all, we failed. Any time we were written off, we did well. Not sure why the underdog role suits us. The Ravens seem to be the same way.
Ward takes shots that are legal and later made illegal. You know people hate him and call him cheap because of how agressive he plays. Receivers are supposed to hit–and the fact that he smiles ticks people off more. People may hate him, but you know you’d LOVE to have him on your team. Same way I feel about Ed Reed. Can’t stand the guy gets so many pick sixes, but I would love for him to wear my team’s colors!

  14. Harm City Homer says: Jul 7, 2010 10:18 AM

The D was suspect last season, but Troy should bring them back to the top tier. I think they can win without BigJen, easier than without Mr. Headandshoulders. If they put a leash back on the hell, it should be a 3 headed dog fight to the finish.

The steelers have been good for so long that their fans forgot what it’s like to be bad. Fortunately, as the end of 2009 showed us, they’ll be finding out for the first time in a while this year.
Big Ben alone made them respectable last year on offense, all while getting sacked at a 50-a-year clip. If you honestly believe Leftwich, the guy with two left feet, can do the same thing, you’re dillusional.

  19. SteelHammer92 says: Jul 7, 2010 10:36 AM

They are returning their entire defense from the historic 2008 season. And that was the season without a running game and incredibly inconsistent offense. Sure, they are all a couple years older now. But getting Troy Polamalu, Aaron Smith, Bryant McFadden, and Larry Foote back is pretty significant if you ask me.

Living in the past is NOT reality, Pittsburgh fans. You can polish your “Lombardis” until hell freezes over, but your whole football world is about to be turned upside down.
The Steelers are the new weak sister of the AFCN. And Hines Ward is your poster-child.

While I disagree with Collier’s opinion that the Steelers will only win six games, why is Rosenthal so adamently opposed to that prediction, that he feels compelled to disagree with it for a second time in a matter of days? Collier may be wrong in his assessment – only time will tell – but he brings up a reasonable concern: the Steelers offensive line was already a weak link on the team, and it just got worse with the loss of their starting tackle.
If Rosenthal wants to editorialize, perhaps he should re-read Collier’s column. The primary point of the article was not about how the Steelers will do this year; it was about how devestating achilles injuries can be, and whether the risk of those injuries is worth the benefit of workouts for 300+ pound players in May and June. To me that’s a whole lot more worthy of discussion than win-loss predictions two months before the season begins.

  27. Steel Dahn Sahth says: Jul 7, 2010 11:00 AM

Every year, the fans of sad sack franchises predict that the Steelers are the weak sister of the division. And mathematically speaking, they are wrong 7 times per decade, on average.
I love BensGals fans who have something to root for about twice a decade, and act like they’ve been there before.
The only team that can even talk any smack is the Rats, because at least they contend, and even have won a modern SB (which in itself is incredibly hilarious considering that it should have been, but never will be, the Browns).
Keep counting the steelers out, and keep being disappointed. And in the rare event that you are right, enjoy your post season loss.

Hines is the guy everyone loves to hate but would love to have him aboard their ship… it has to be one of the most embarassing moments in a db’s carreer being taken out by a little ole wide reciever.LOL Its hit or be hit…..i love it!..Everyone in the NFL loved some Stallworth and Swann.. Hines has surpassed both of them. :-)

And EVERY FREAKIN YEAR the so-called experts predict Steelers, Pats, Colts, or Chargers to go to the Superbowl DESPITE often having evidence to the contrary. Often they are right – but not always – and that’s a big reason they are so hated and that’s why it’s so GD fun when Hine’s cries like a baby after another loss.

  32. highjak78 says: Jul 7, 2010 11:22 AM

Hines Ward is the dirtiest player in the NFL (R. Harrison retired), and clearly on the downside of his hit-u-from-behind career. I wonder how much he’s gonna cry when they lose most of their games this year?
p.s. – hey ‘burgh, your D will be good for about 2 games, then Pileofllamapoo will get hurt again since he is no longer on HGH. Your offense is the worst in the division on paper – seriously, when Heath Miller is your best offensive weapon, you got problems – how do you guys plan on winning ANYTHING????

  33. js136202 says: Jul 7, 2010 11:25 AM

My challenge to steelers fans is to explain how they’ll be good this year. I mean with actual facts. Explain to me how the end of last year wasn’t an abberation. Explain to me how a team that will contend for the Super Bowl this year blew a home game against the Raiders AT HOME.
Explain to me how they can protect Leftwich and big ben, much less create a meaningful rushing attack that has been lacking the past year. Where have they improved over last year’s team, with the exception of the (presumed) return of Polamalu? Hell, explain to me how they scored 0 TD’s against the Browns when they were in a win-or-miss-the-playoffs mode on national TV.
I hate the friggin Bengals, but they have a defense that is young and tough and a much more potent offense, and the Ravens have definitely taken a major step forward. The steelers feel like the third best team in the AFC North.

I think reasonable people don’t write off the Steelers. How can you? They missed the playoffs following the SB against Seattle, and it took them all of 2 years to get back there. Following the Seattle game, the Steelers fought some injuries the following year, but basically had the same battle-tested team.
    This year:
QB- Starter out 4 games. Back up A old and immobile. Backup B promising but unproven.
RB- Starters first full year as the main back, missed most of his rookie year with an injury, spent time in the dog house last year because of maturity issues, relatively green but tough.
WR- Ageless wonder continues to be productive
WR2- 1st season as number 2 option- no Holmes to open things up, unproven on his own, huge potential though.
WR3- Can throw passes on trick plays, but is otherwise irrelevant
    TEs- Both are solid players
O-line- Minus Colon hurts. Would they be better if Roethlisberger was the QB? With Leftwich’s mobility, he needs to get the ball out quickly, the line doesn’t have to hold blocks for as long. With Dixon, if the line breaks down, he can do more than 7 on his feet.
    D-line- Always solid.
Linebackers- the Steelers find players, you can’t deny that (I don’t know how you can deny Harrison’s use of PED’s though. He wasn’t a journeyman, he was cut by the Steelers 3 times, and the Ravens once. Plus, look at his freaking forehead!)
Corners- suspect, but a good pass rush and top notch safety play, a lot of their deficiencies are covered up.
    Safety- Polamalu makes the secondary.
K- he is what he is. A sloppy drunk who is money on the shitty turf at Heinz field.
Special teams- a couple years ago there was a woman over 80 playing in a womens pro football league and was the primary kick returner. She could score against the Steelers special teams.
3rd place schedule, pedigree of winning. Doubt they lose to the Browns after last year. 8-8, 9-7 probably no worse or no better. They could make the playoffs at 9-7 and make a run. Who knows.

Yeah, without Holmes stretching the field and opening up man to man coverage for Ward underneath, I’m sure Ward is going to catch 95 balls. Everyone can see Ward has lost at least a step. He’s nothing more than an undersized TE at this point. I will bet money that he goes back to his normal 70-80 catches, tops.

  50. steelersmichele says: Jul 7, 2010 2:02 PM

Hines Ward’s career isn’t going downhill–he had one of his best season’s last year.
And the reason why Steelers fans get so defensive is because we are used to having winning seasons, and when we don’t, it’s something new to us. We have high expectations every year. Yeah, we have season where we go 6-10 and don’t make the playoffs, but the fact that we get upset means we expect to win. Who wouldn’t get upset when their team doens’t make the playoffs?
And if you’re not getting upset, shame on you. Any team can win any Sunday (my team made that statement true many times last year) and any team can seriously win the SB. I mean, look at least season.
People can make predictions all they want, but seriously, no one knows what will happen.

Ya blame the women. Isn’t it strange that Ben seems to be the only player to keep getting into this situation?

Ben is innocent until proven guilty but not the victim. She’s a pathetic girl who is looking for attention.
Or as others such as the very fair minded and victimized Deb says, a money grabbing whore.
    Pittsburgh fans are classy.

    A “ridiculous column”?
So, because someone’s opinion differs from your own, it’s a “ridiculous column”?
Good job. Way to sound professional.

There is something ironic and hypocritical about your post.

    DM-
the words you quoted by pola whats his name are fine but then you added your own BS. Ben had not been charged less convicted of rape. He may be an idiot and a pig but people that think you are disgusting.

The blog gave a game by game reasoning for the groups picks. They actually thought it out but you like a child summarily dismiss their opinions. Grow up.

The article in question was ridiculou, not because they said the Steelers were going to suck because their logic was flawed. It would work with any team. If the Steelers do bad it will probably be because they start out rough and have trouble recovering. If they do good it certainly won’t be because people pocked against them, it probably be because they still have a fair amount of talent and they tend to draft well.
