We’ve been critical of Randy Moss from time to time, and for good reason. He can be moody, aloof, manipulative. At some time or another, he has quit on every team for which he has played.
But beneath the exterior, he has a good heart. He’s demonstrating it again this week in his home state of West Virginia via the Feed the Children Caravan.
And he’s doing it with one of the only NBA non-free agents who has managed to get his name mentioned this week -- O.J. Mayo, who played high school basketball in Huntington and who has played professional basketball at Memphis and USC.
Together, they have purchased boxes of food and personal-care products for 1,600 families in Huntington and Charleston.
“I always said you really don’t see what’s going on behind closed doors,” Moss said, per the Huntington Herald-Dispatch. “When I pulled up and saw all those boxes . . . that’s a lot of families and children that need food and good nutrition. Hopefully, we can do more for his community and my community and the state of West Virginia.”
Moss and Mayo handed out the boxes in Huntington on Tuesday. Mayo will also do it in Charleston, but Moss was unable to personally hand out the boxes there due to a scheduling conflict.
That scheduling conflict could have something to do with Moss’ ongoing search for an agent; according to NFLPA records, Moss has yet to hire a replacement for Tim DiPiero, who had represented Moss for his entire career.
