Smith has started a whole 19 games. Jennings has started 52. Do it another season, Steve. And maybe run for a few yards after the catch. Do those two things and you’ll get the money you want.

That’s true, and I don’t dispute that Steve Smith is a possession WR. But the Giants also didn’t have another WR start all 16 games (a la Driver) or a guy with Driver’s experience to warrant your argument. The fact of the matter is that Greg Jennings runs one route and one route only. Fast and in a straight line downfield. He can have the YAC and YPR. It makes for more excitement but doesn’t necessarily contribute to winning football games as much as a guy that moves the chains 61 times or catches more TDs does.

I see your point. Obviously the Giants had more rookies/inexperienced guys on the team last year and so by default Steve Smith was more of a focal point. (Not to mention the running game was banged up) However, I watched all of the Giants and Packers games last year on the NFL package and Steve Smith runs much better, much more precise routes than Greg Jennings. All Greg Jennings has shown himself to be capable of doing is running fast in a straight line and trying to get open. His YPC and YAC stats show that out. So perhaps Jennings sees less catches because he can’t be counted on to be as frequently open as Smith. There’s a hundred ways of spinning the argument, the fact remains that Smith had better stats than Jennings, is a year behind Jennings, and in my opinion could/will develop into a better all around WR than Greg Jennings.

When are these players going to be forced to reconcile that just because another player who happens to be of comparable talent and plays the same position got a certain amount of money does NOT mean that they are automatically going to get a comparable amount?
Do you think if some schmoe at WalMart went to his manager and said, “Hey, floor salespeople at J.C. Penneys are getting $0.75 more per hour than I am and I want that same pay”, that he would get it? Nope, he’d be laughed out the door. His manager would likely tell him that perhaps he should have applied at Penneys. I can’t wait for a team to tell a player, “We don’t give a crap what Pittsburgh or Detroit is paying their left tackle. You aren’t employed by the Steelers or the Lions. If you work here, THIS is what you’ll get…and LIKE it.”

those numbers work both ways. to me they prove smith is indeed a possession guy. almost 40 more receps than jennings but for a measly 107 yards? sounds like underneath routes, quick slants, and dumpoffs — and that YAC basically says he catches it and falls down.
I don’t have the rest of the giants numbers in front of me but i’m guessing smith didn’t have a teammate like driver accounting for a boatload of receptions either.

I don’t see the big deal here he isn’t asking for elite money. He isn’t asking for Brandon Marshall money which is 10 million a year. Jennings is a completely different receiver than Smith but i think Smith deserves between 6 and 7 million a year.
Smith is not the big play receiver Jennings is but he is one of the best possession/3rd down receivers in the game and is still very young.
Smith had 107 catches for 1220 yards and 7 touchdowns last year.
Jennings had 68 catches for 1113 yards and 4 touchdowns.

boy, you people are idiots. you know nothing about the Giants, then go read a few stats, and pronounce he doesn’t deserve anything. i’m sure you would have said the same thing about Amani Toomer, arguably the greatest WR in Giants history.
this guy is more reliable than my watch… he makes the big, clutch catches, and it seems like he’s ALWAYS open. he won’t burn you with speed, and he may not be the prototypical “elite #1″, but he’s got great football IQ and has run precise routes since DAY ONE in blue. i can’t wait to see you all shut up in 3 years when he’s getting the money he deserves and putting up great production year-in and year-out.
the Giants will make sure that Steve Smith stays around for a long time and they always pay deserving players like 3rd & Smith very well…

Jennings will never need to get 100 receptions, because he has Donald Driver on the other side. Jordy Nelson, and James Jones are both very good recievers as well.

If I were a young WR, I can think of about 15 other names I’d compare myself to in regards to a new contract.
No offense to Packers fans, but lay off the moonshine…. Jennings has had the same amount of pro bowl seasons as Smith.

Those statistics are misleading. Green Bay spreads the ball around more.
Consider:
(I’m only listing those with over 20 catches)
Driver: 70 catches, 1,061yds and 6 tds
Jennings: 68 catches, 1,113yds and 4tds
Finley: 55 catches, 676yds and 5 tds
Donald Lee: 37 catches
Jones – 32 catches
Grant – 25 catches,
Nelson – 22 catches
Jackson – 21 catches
The Giants:
Smith 107, 1220 and 7tds
Manningham 57, 822, 5TDs
Nicks 47, 790 and 6tds
Kevin Boss TE 42, 567 and 5TDs
Bradshaw had 21 catches.
The fact that Smith caught more balls last year is likely more indicative of the fact that the Packers have a ton of pass catching talent and not anything to do with the relative talents of the two.

Even Greg Jennings didnt deserve the money he got. Neither of these guys are truly elite WR’s. everyone above pretty much already put a good list together. There is no way I would even sit down with his agent to discuss any kind of extension. If he has another 100 reception year then I would talk, but I still wouldnt give him that kind of money

Honestly, neither Jennings nor Smith have proven to consistently be able to shoulder the load the way in which you would expect a #1 WR to.
Let’s face it: 80% of current NFL #1 WR’s are overpaid and can easily be replaced. Dime a dozen is the best term that comes to mind. How much does the Giants’ passing game suffer without Smith? Not terribly. Same with Green Bay.

Greg Jennings has never had over 80 receptions in any year and last year he only had 69 receptions with 4 td’s……. whereas Donald Driver has had more receptions every year than Jennings, so doesn’t that make Jennings the “anquan Boldin” of the Packers? I think Smith picked a pretty good wr. to compare himself to….at least he didn’t compare himself to a. johnson, r. moss, r. wayne, fitzgerald etc. In the two years that Smith can be compared to Jennings, Smith has 164 receptions to Jennings 149 . Now before anyone gets on their high-horse, I too would give Jennings the edge over Smith but his player to compare himself with is not as crazy as Rosenthal perhaps thinks……at least not so by Rosenthal’s “criteria” in making his arguement.
