Bad teams rising in 2010?

Real (or close to it) free agency ushered in a new dynamic in the NFL — true parity.

Each year, when the won-loss records reset to zero wins and zero losses, fans of every team can make a semi-plausible case that this year will be The Year.

So could some recently downtrodden teams turn it around and make it to the playoffs in 2010?  PFT Daily closes out the week with consideration of five franchise’s chances.

Falcons/Dolphins were the surprise teams 2 years ago??? Not the Cardinals??? You know the surprise team to make it to the SUPERBOWL!!! Your hatred for the Cardinals is disgusting Florio.

Funny thing is, the Lions can double their wins from last year and still finish in last place at 4-12.

I thought the Jets were something of a surprise team last year, myself…I mean when was the last time they were in the playoffs? Bengals?! BAH!

Kansas City could be a surprise team because of their running game and if Cassel improves.
But their defense looked awful last year. Crennel has his work cut out for him.

    WTF FLORIO!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you seriously hyping up the Hams more than the 49ers? Are you trying to show you have absolutely no football knowledge?
The Hams are the joke of the NFL, the absolute joke. The Niners will absolutely, without a doubt win that division.
Rosenthal … buddy … the stars are aligned, the truth is plain in sight … time for an intervention for the boss man and his obvious lust for the nose candy 😦

  10. HC says: Jul 9, 2010 1:39 PM

I don’t think the Cardinals were a ‘surprise’ two years ago; people had been predicting for them to be that breakout team for about three or four years in a row.
I think because of the change in the salary cap there may be fewer teams with quick turnarounds. There’s been a 50% increase in the cap from 2005 to 2009. That’s resulted in fewer good teams having to cut players they didn’t want to, as was common previously. In addition as the years have passed teams have gained a better understanding of how to avoid getting into problems with staying under the cap. With the better teams more likely to stay good, there’s less opportunity for the bad teams to rise.
Now this year with no cap, nobody has the problem of staying under the cap, plus few are spending a lot of money due to uncertainty of whether or not there will be football next year, or what the new cap will be if there is football then. That again leads to less movement from good to bad or bad to good.
I think the teams mentioned may improve, but they’re probably all at least two years away from contending for a playoff spot.

Florio not trashing the Rams? Not one mention of the “Greatest Show Offs on Turf”? Wow! Someone must really hate the Cards…

  12. raideralex99 says: Jul 9, 2010 1:45 PM

Packers and Vikings (SB appearance favorites) in your division and you expect the Lions to surprise afew people … no way unless Favre and Rodgers get hurt.
The only surprises that can happen is in the West both the AFC and NFC West divisions are weak … don’t get me wrong a major injury to one of the elite QBs could change afew teams positions but I don’t call a season ending injury a surprise.

  13. cedricbenson says: Jul 9, 2010 1:46 PM

thereallacardsfan- Florio means bad record to good record. Cards went from 8-8 in ’08 to 9-7 on ’09.
    Eric Q- The Jets went from a 9-7 team in ’08 to a 9-7 team in ’09.
A 8-8 or 9-7 team making a Super Bowl run isnt as shocking as the 4-12 Falcons with a rookie QB going 11-5 or the 1-15 Miami Dolphins winning the division after the Pats went 16-0.
Those are turn arounds. 9-7 to 9-7? Not so much.

  14. ozzie41 says: Jul 9, 2010 1:48 PM

One of these years the Lions are gonna make some noise. They’ve been drafting high and reasonably well for a long time. I know that attempts at parity can be thwarted by idiots like Matt Millen. But, they have a lot of talent. I expect them to finish third ahead of the Bears in that division. Maybe even second ahead of the Packers.

I’m calling the Browns to come in a strong 3rd place this year in front of the Steelers.
Surprise team= Maybe Oakland even though I do not like them. They’ve had a good offseason.

  16. nowathand says: Jul 9, 2010 1:53 PM

I won’t cast doubt on Delhomme returning to form without mentioning how players in football and baseball usually take awhile to fully recover from Tommy John surgery.
That ten year funk Florio mentioned for the Lions probably was created with Barry Sanders retiring, except they made the playoffs the first year after he retired.
I know he is short on time, but Florio mentions the Rams and simply states that the West is so weak that they would have an easier path. It’s clear from top to bottom that the Rams have easily the least recognizable, least experienced starting 22 in the West and don’t have the kind of depth at linebacker, running back and receiver that the rest of the division has.
If the division is so weak, how is it that the Rams have lost six straight against the Seahawks, six straight against Arizona and five out of six to San Francisco?
I, too, like that Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel were added. This would be a good moment in the video to detail their philosophical strengths (you should be allowed Notre Dame footage on NBC) and how the players fit or even that Matt Cassel best succeeded in an offense by one of Weis’s assistants, Josh McDaniels. Instead, you mention that Weis and Crennel’s last season together was a Championship one, which should make fans remember that these guys have been successful before, but is not very substantial considering this is a completely different group of players.
Your Raiders points are nice and I, too, overlook their tied for 32nd ranking in interceptions and in rushing TDs allowed, and their 28th-ranked yards per carry allowed and think, this 23.7 points allowed defense overall has been good considering the Black Hole their offense puts them in.
If you want help producing these videos, I work for cheap!

  22. technoboy says: Jul 9, 2010 2:15 PM

Please your reading comprehension as good as your listening. This wasn’t his pick to win the division, just teams that are ‘bottom feeders’ who have a chance at improvement.
Looking at the NFC West, the Cardinal without Boldin and Warner are not the same team. And 49er’s have been putting together a couple of good offseason and I really like the coach. The Rams are in the 3 year of rebuilding and should start to show dividents this year. I don’t think it will take more than 8-8 to win the NFC West. So it is possible for the Rams, but not likely.
Chill people, it is the off season and there isn’t much to talk about.

  23. JSpicoli says: Jul 9, 2010 2:29 PM

You mentioned OAK, but failed to scrape the surface of even doing a little research (ri-ˈsərch). You talk D but go nowhere mentioning the great draft choices in McClain, who will anchor the D, and Houston who already has shown a bit of a mean streak in OTA’s and is a run stuffer. Revamping the entire middle of the D to add to the secondary that is already good.
But why do research on the Raiders when you can wing it and use your stereotypes?
I thought this was a football site that did indepth analysis.

Mean One: Are you serious? If you’re referring to Denver, forget about it. They’ve got a ways to go before they contend for anything (such as lunch for example) With all the new faces on board, including Tim “Hold that thought while I quote Leviticus” Tebow, I find it hard to believe they could beat anyone outside of the AFC West, including my Raiders. They will need a year or two to contend, and that’s provided only if the team doesn’t implode under the weight and ego of a certain head coach.

DP= director of photography? I was suggesting myself to Mike Florio as more of a scriptwriter, so his videos would go more in-depth if that was something they wanted to do. I have experience with Final Cut Pro. I did more transitions, editing and filtering than I did effects. E-mail me and I can show a video I did leisurely.

Here’s a few other things to keep in mind about the Raiders this year:
    1. Behind what was arguably a worse offensive line in Washington than he will have this year in Oakland, Jason Campbell was the 15th ranked QB by passer rating. In contrast, JaMarcus was the worst QB in the NFL
    2. Speaking of OL, Raiders get Gallery back form injury, re-signed Langston Walker and had 2 great draft picks – providing at least a small improvement in quality but more significantly a massive improvement in depth
    3. The Raiders play Houston while Brian Cushing is out on suspension and Tennessee while one of their LBs (McCrath) is out suspended.
    4. A lot of playmakers on Raiders opponents are currently in contract squabbles (McNeil and Jackson for the Chargers, Chris Johnson for the Titans.
    5. Raiders get WR Schillens back from injury – had almost as many receptions in 6 games as any other Raiders WR all year
    6. Raiders actually have an Offensive Coordinator this year
    7. Denver is a worse team this year without Brandon Marshall
    8. KC is still one dimensional on offense and horrible on defense
    9. Raiders losses to SD were by 4 and 8 points (the 4 point loss coming in the season opener where JaMarcus missed several wide open WRs)
    10. Raiders get the Cardinals early (before Leinart settles in), Indy late (when they pull their starters) and plays one of their NFC W road games in SF (no commute there). In fact, they have only one game in the eastern time zone (@ Jax)
    11. THe Raiders finally have a bye week midseason instead of after game 4.
    12. The Raiders do not have a single prime time game – the pressure of which they have not handled well for the last few years
I’m not predicting playoffs or even a winning season necessarily – but more so than anytime in the last 5 years, the cards are actually stacked pretty well for them

  37. Byrd Is The Word says: Jul 9, 2010 3:47 PM

The Bills will surprise a lot of people, though it might not be enough to make the playoffs (toes crossed–typing with fingers).
I usually don’t watch the videos, I was hoping the Bills would be mentioned. But I’m glad I did…I had already forgotten that Weis and Crennel are in KC. It’ll be interesting to see how that team plays on Sundays.

  38. Sociofan says: Jul 9, 2010 4:08 PM

What? No love for the changes in Washington?
I call B.S. on the Rams, but if I had to pick a surprise team this year, I would watch the Raiders. They’ve definitely made some positive subtractions (yeah, …) and positive additions. The attitude and chemistry has changed completely out there.
The Lions have another year or so to go and they are playing in a division with the Pack and the Vikings. While they might improve, there is NO way they make the post season this year.
    Cleveland….maybe, but I doubt it.
Florio, if you’d featured teams like the Raiders, the 49ers and the Redskins, I’d give you credibility on this piece, but not with the teams you threw out there.

No mention of the Bucs, won 2 out of the last 3, beat the Saints & Packers last year with the rookie QB playing only half the season, multiple upgrades at DT & WR in the draft, upgraded secondary through FA. Easier schedule this year! We’ll see. 9-7 isn’t out of the question (more likely 7-9 but still)

  41. ogtv says: Jul 9, 2010 4:47 PM

@jbraider wow u raiders fans do it every year what has schillens ever done but be injured and saying denver got worse because of one player get real it is teams that win games denver went 8-8 last year in a new system most of there players are in there second year now so they should be better teh raiders might win 5 games this year jason campbell was the most sacked qb last year and gallery has been terrible his whole carreer which will prob equal to most sacked qb again this year raiders 5-11 broncos 9-7

  42. Newguy says: Jul 9, 2010 5:08 PM

Compare NFL and MLB over the last dozen or so years. They are similiar in distribution of winning %’s and in year to year improvement / slippage or teams.

Hey numbnuts, im referring to the COLTS!! How did you get Broncos from Ponies?? I know theyre both horses, but cmon man!
The Colts roster is ridiculously loaded, even more so than last year. Obviously it doesnt matter until the playoffs roll around, but its gonna take quite an effort to keep them out of the Super bowl…barring injuries, of course

  45. raiderfansteve says: Jul 9, 2010 6:48 PM

The guy who said Robert Gallery hasn’t been good his whole career doesn’t watch NFL games clearly… he just listens to major stories and thinks that’s what happens for entire careers and entire decades… Gallery was terrible at LT when he first came in the NFL, about three years ago Gallery was moved to LG where he has been terrific… Many thought two years ago Gallery should have been a pro bowler and he was receiving a lot of consideration. And last year he was expected for fight for a pro bowl as a Guard in the AFC until he was injured… don’t act like you know what you’re talking about because the year after he was drafted everyone called him a bust, Robert Gallery is one of the best LG’s in the NFL.
And by the way, how is it that you ACTUALLY THINK the Denver Broncos will IMPROVE on last year despite losing their SOLE offensive weapon? And they had pretty much the luckiest win in NFL history against Browns last year, they should’ve been 7-9 last year, they’ll probably be 6-10 this year, they have no one on offense, and their defense lost the whole reason they were improved last year (Mike Nolan)…
You can be a Raider hater all you want, but not understanding what you’re talking about and just shooting off at the mouth is ignorant. The Raiders are a better team than the Denver Broncos going into this season, and when the season is over the Raiders will be about 8-8 or 9-7 and the Denver Broncos will be around 6-10.

  46. raiderfansteve says: Jul 9, 2010 6:49 PM
