Ex-Cowboy Lockhart fails drug test while awaiting fraud trial

Former Cowboys linebacker Eugene Lockhart was arrested Friday after testing positive for cocaine in a court-ordered drug test while he awaits trial on mortgage fraud charges.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Lockhart, who played for the Cowboys from 1984 to 1990, tested positive for cocaine in May.

Lockhart was arrested in September and charged with mortgage fraud, and he is required to submit to random drug testing while he awaits trial. When he submitted the positive test in May a warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was arrested and jailed briefly Friday before being released.

The prosecutor in the case has accused Lockhart of “gaming the system” by showing up for drug tests several days late, allowing time for drugs to clear from his system.

The judge has ruled that Lockhart can remain free until his trial, but must get a drug evaluation and ask for permission to leave the county where he lives.
