Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has tried to bring glitz and glamor to South Florida since purchasing the team from Wayne Huizenga. Ross has done it in part by slicing off slivers of the team and selling it to celebrities like Jimmy Buffet, Marc Anthony, Venus and Serena Williams, Fergie, and Gloria Estefan.
But, in one fell swoop, the local basketball team has cornered the market on Miami buzz.
So what are the Dolphins doing? They’re taking the high road, kissing up to the Heat with a full-page ad in all local newspapers.
The ad, per various media reports, congratulated the Heat on their historic week, thanked Dwyane Wade for not leaving, and welcomes LeBron James and Chris Bosh.
Sorry, but we’re not buying it. The Dolphins have owned the market for decades, and they now face their first real threat to local dominance. Besides, with no one talking about the Dolphins in the wake of the coup d’heat, the full-page ads might as well have said, “Hey! Miami! Don’t forget about us!”
If the Dolphins don’t make big things happen quickly, Miami could easily forget about the local football team — unless and until they can get Ronnie Brown to lure Tom Brady and Randy Moss to town.
JUST BE BETTER THAN CLEVELAND
I saw your fish, Florio. Catch another 15 of them, cut their heads off, pack them in oil, and you’ll have a full can to put in the kid’s lunchbox next week.
Welcome to Miami, Chris & LeBron!!! We will have an emergency evacuation in the next few weeks…
But the photo accompanying the “Dolphins welcome LeBron James to Miami” ad had him photoshopped into a football uniform.
After picking the Phins to win the AFC East in that video you had to come up with something to let us know you still hate the Dolphins too!
But maybe you should get your facts right. Neither Fergie nor Jimmy Buffet own parts of the Phins. Fergie was approved but never bought in and Jimmy Buffet has investments in casinos so he could not be approved to own part of the team.
Also the idea that having multipul exciting teams in once city is somehow bad is a silly one. Think people in Boston or Pittsburgh were complaining when all their teams were winning championships?
Hey, LeBron… Cleveland here …. nice to see you found another town to kiss your punk ass.
Try to keep Gloria out from under your teammates which you couldn’t do here.
I’m sorry but no team will ever be bigger then the Dolphins in Miami . The Heat ( 1 ) and the Marlins ( 2 ) have both recently won championships since the Fins have last won there’s and they still have not past them . Every one will be on the Heat bandwagon but Miami is always going to be a football town.
Miami is not a basketball town. Its going to take alot more than a scumbag like LeBron James to make football fans just stop caring about the Dolphins. Its not going to hurt their bottom line at all.
The biggest thing in Miami since Willie Beamen.
Basketball cant ever compete with football
The Marlins won two World Series titles in six years and nobody cares. Hell, didn’t the Heat win a title recently? Nobody cares about them, either. Deal with it.
It won’t matter if there isn’t any football…
this is stupid. Miami is, and will always be a football town. No one cares about the NBA
Nothing whatsoever glamorous about the Dolphins.
The only way they’ll top this is to sign Payton Manning when his contract is up!
Le yawn. More senseless Dolphins bashing from Florio. In other news, I scratched my balls five minutes ago. I can’t wait for the PFT news article on that.
Seriously! If Jordan and majic teamed up in south beach they would not top the dolphins. Miami will always be Dolphin first.
This was a major question I had for Lebron. He could have had the big city by the short hairs. He could have been the king of New York. Now he will die as dwaynes bitch in a city that bleeds aqua and orange. What a joke…..
Florio go blow some smoke up rex’s fat ass that might make a story!
I guess you don’t listen to or read Dan Lebatard, A real journalist. Everything he says contradicts this article, but nice try at nothing bud.
GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the Dolphins get in the playoffs they’ll have stars of their own leading the way. Just win and the rest will take care of itself.
What you talkin’ ’bout Mike? You’re picking them to win the AFC East, so that’s a big feather in their cap right there!
Dolphins will always have plenty of tickets for visiting fans, it’s great when you can visit Miami and sit with fans from your own town and make it a home game.
Hahah! Maybe Brady and Moss would drag along Belichick, but never in a million years. They’d need Welker back too, and that won’t happen either.
Have you grown lately? http://srgservice.com/books
The only team in Miami is the Hurricanes! And none of the teams can fill out there stadiums!
Fins don’t care, basketball is not a real sport.

agreed i love the heat and i know theyll do good but the dolphins are the sports symbol of this town and its writtin in stone. This city will ALWAYS belong to Marino and shula.
LeBron has all the media attention right now but the NFL is still the NFL. Put a competitive team out there and you’ll have plenty of buzz in the city.
Florio couldn’t go a day without a hit generating, polarizing post. He knew when he typed this garbage that both Jets and Dolphins fans would flock to this post to comment. You’re an NBC sellout, Florio.
I know this post is what you’re looking for. It’s another hit to add to your quota. It’s just one more notch to please your bread and butter parents…N beeeee C. I know all this and I am still going to make you “peruse this for the seven words you can’t say on TV.”
It disgusts me what you’ve become. Your posts all follow the same format. Opening…joke…body…shot at the subject of the story…conclusion…lame one liner.
You used to be the premiere place to get news. Now, I can just wait for your posts to show up on face book, sans the BS. I hope your lifestyle that is provided by your masters is consolation for the sale of your soul.
This piece is speculative garbage, flawed from the start, factually wrong, and I’m calling you out for it. Where’s the response that the old Florio would have kicked in? You silent sellout.
um…
“slow period of the NFL”
Right, Florio?
Go to hell Mike. It aint about yeewww!!!
“unless and until they can get Ronnie Brown to lure Tom Brady and Randy Moss to town.”
Yeah, its called Chad Henne to Brandom Marshall. In case you were unaware, his nickname is “the beast” for a reason. And yeah, the Heat took a large portion of Miami’s sporting market while doing this. But Ross is far to dedicated to marketing to sit down.
I hope LeBron snaps his ankle on day 1 of the season and the Heat go onto to play and possibly win the championship without him. That would be truly awesome.

Nice
twan7272 thinks Dan LeBatard a is real journalist. hahahahaha That’s like saying the NBA, with their refs fixing games, their commish fixing the draft and execs like Pat Riley blatantly tampering with other teams players is a legit sports league. Meet the WWE in Nike hightops.
PS – Miami is a lousy sports town. Neck and neck with Atlanta for worst in the country.
Football towns sell out home playoff games. Miami is NOT a football town.
Mike I live in south Florida and can tell you that this is a Football town. If the Dolphins win the AFC east and just make the playoffs it will mean more to the area than the Heat winning the NBA Championship. In fact the expectations are so high in basketball that anything less than a Championship will not be acceptable. The Dolphins are going to surprise a lot of experts this season.
The only team down here gritting their teeth are the Marlins.
LOL @ the Dulfin fans scurrying out of the word work “Miami is a Football Town”…. As if they know what that really is.. Zubazz wearing Dolts.
It was a classy move by one franchise to another. Why must you always try to muck it up— other than searching for clicks.
Bitter and envy is a sad way to go thru life people.
Now all LeBron and his boyz need to do is win something. Don’t count your rings before you’ve won them home boyz.
so florio, you would trade an aging Brady and Moss for Henne and Marshall? Maybe ten years ago but today. Get a grip.
Why would they bother even commenting?
Who cares what the football team, hockey team, soccer team… Gators, Seminoles etc think?
Regarding: “Mike I live in south Florida and can tell you that this is a Football town. If the Dolphins win the AFC east and just make the playoffs it will mean more to the area than the Heat winning the NBA Championship.”
Reason 101 why Lebron was so stupid to go to that 2nd rate town…. If it were me, I’d own New York, I’d win there and then grow old and fish in Miami with the rest of the Geezers……
A Championship in Miami is hollow, as if it really happened????? I can’t even name the Dolphins last Championship… Did they wear Helmets?
The Heat Won?????, Who was on that team Mourning? Did it REALLY happen… I’ll call grandpa joe and see if he remembers such a thing….
You win in NEW YORK and you’re on top of the world…. You win in miami and it’s as if you won the shuffle board tourny at the home. YAY!
So this is the replacement article, since PFT took down the Crowder Done For the Season article? Y’know, the article that was created from someone watching a game from last year?
Ahhh, at least stuff on PFT brings humor..indirectly, but humor none the less.
James, Wade, Bosh, Beasley, and 3 rookies. Add 5 minimum contract vets and you have a second round series loss. He had a better chance to win it all in Cleveland. Now the bank is broke and there will be no one on the bench who can sniff a jock without help. Good luck.

Hey stampats your from New York and loving it? Your delusional! Get out and enjoy life.
Gotta say it – I was born in Cleveland and my mother is from Miami – 34 years old, so I know both places very well.
Miami is fins town! Now if the Dolphins are playing bad, they are pretty much like any other NFL city, they stop going to the games. But when the season begins, the 1st 4 home games are sold out.
In regards to the Heat, after that 1st Championship, the team fell off and the Crowd support definitely went with it. So if they are not winning, it gets old fast! Now back in the days of Rony Seikaly, Glenn Rice, Harold Miner and John Salley – playing in the Miami Arena, it was hype. But over the years, South Beach mainstream made it an envouge thing to go to a Heat game, not because of the basketball being played, but to be seen!?
In regards to Lebron “I’m a giant fraud” James, yes he can go wherever he wants to, but I don’t have to respect him for his reasoning.
A lot of the people are totally missing the point, on both sides of the aisle in regards to “King” James decision. Since Dick Vitale started the campaign on this fella, he was “ANNOINTED” the next great one! Yes, let me say it again, “ANNOINTED THE NEXT GREAT ONE!”
Those kind of players, receive sneaker deals, drink contracts, sponsorship deals, because they are special!
But here is the deal with those kind of players! They can take a team and put it on their back and make it into something. They stick with their team until they bring, “THEIR” team a championship!
The Cavaliers were “LEBRONS” team! But by him cutting tail and running to Miami shows a lot about his character!? He has no heart – when I say heart, I mean he doesn’t have the toughness to stick something out. He doesn’t have any backbone, because he needed Wade and Bosh to legitimize him. Michael Jordan took a bunch of rag tag role players and turned them into Champions! Lebron James didn’t do that!
none the less the Fins BETTER step it up now!!! It has been way too long to win in the playoffs!!! Maybe bringing in the superstars to the NBA will get some motovation out of the Dolphins!!! I’M ALL FOR IT!!! GO FINS!!!
The U?
Stampats,
Calling out Dolphins fans about when was the last time they won a SB?
Now that is funny coming from a Jests fan !!
41 years and counting!
Nice screen name, try something original !
The NBA sucks now.
And with the amount of money the Heat will be spending on those three players, they may be getting people out of the stands to play the center and point guard positions.
First, Miami will always be a football town. With all the college football powerhouses and the Dolphins, it is hard to ever imagine Miami not being a Football first town.
Now yes, the Heat are the shiny new attraction. But it is seasonal, basketball is not played year round.
Second, the Heat have won a championship recently and when the winning stopped, the fans stopped supporting…well once Shaq left that is.
Third, the Marlins have won 2 championships but no one goes to the games.
So yes, Miami will be very high on the Heat for the next 5 years or more. But it is all about winning. If this is about capturing the daily headlines, yes the Dolphins do not have a Lebron, Wade and Bosh. They need to build a team and have a few super stars. But winning cures all ailments and that is what they Dolphins need to do.
@ampats,
Wow. Did you get escorted out of Miami? You sound really bitter. Is it because you live in the swamps of Noo Joisey?
@ DCSPRTSFN
Oh Heck Yes
The U!
you ppl are ridiculous and dnt know anything about sports and yh football sucks no wonder why know1 outside the states cares about it and basketball is the 3 rd most popularr sport in the worl trailing socccer and that annoying sport they call cricket anyway the miami heat are gonna own miami and even if by some chance it doesnt i highly dought who cares cuz that team is gonna be more famous globaly anyway wihle the nfl sucks
