Gene was also the king of the deadline trade. He got guys from teams that had signed their stars to hometown discounts, like Clemens and got guys like Strawberry on the free agent market for almost nothing. George would throw money at the guys to keep them but Gene would get them on the cheap and he made sure that the Yankees only paid for performance.
I’m not a fan of the Yankees but I do admire what those two did but more so, Gene because he showed what the club could do if they let their people run it and the owner just signed the checks. The irony is that George’s “lifetime” suspension opened the door for all of this and the Yankees might have only won one championship if he was still meddling.

He was certainly a winner, no question, but he was also a first class A**hole! He ruined baseball with his $300 million payrolls, etc.
And lets not forget, he won 7 Championships in 37 years, but the team already had 20 when he bought the club. The way he is praised, you would think he won 20…..
I am willing to bet, that if you took the Yankees payroll, and gave it to another team, that team would win more than 7 titles in the next 37 years

george had a lot of good moments but he also had some bad moments.the idea that he was the architect of this super team is not correct.when he was banished from baseball in the early nineties,there was a group of people within the yankee organization that took control of the direction of the yankees and decided to build a farm system from the bottom up,this is where the so called”core”came from,jeter posada,reviera and petitte.this was the basis of the new dynasty that won five world championships.
the unsung hero of this palace coup was gene michaels,most people don’t even know who he is but believe me this guy was the father of this dynasty.
because george was so obsessed about being in the limelight,michaels never got his due.

bigrig – Baseball’s a joke, almost as boring as soccer, only slightly more entertaining than Cricket, so saying the Wankees have more titles in baseball is like saying Baltimore is the STD capital of the US. Its a fact, but nothing to be proud of.
The rules need to be changed to speed up the game, maybe make it mandatory to pitch within a time limit (kinda like a delay of game thing) and do away with the stupid “any foul ball after the 2nd is not a strike” BS. Boy, I’m sure many QB’s would love to have multiple do overs if they had to throw OB…

He paid some low life gambler to dig up dirt on Winfield. When the suspension was announced at Yankee Stadium, there was a standing ovation.
Ol’ George wasn’t always as popular as he was in later years. But no question, the man cared about winning.

Steinbrenner is the most important most famous most succesful owner in professional sports history. When the Yankees could no longer own the farm systems, Steinbrenner created a farm system out of the league he was in and bought prize stock from teams he would later smother. If only other teams could have kept up.
