Santa Clara keeps moving forward on new 49ers stadium

Last month, officials in Santa Clara cleared a major hurdle in connection with the construction of a new stadium at which the San Francisco 49ers would play. But the process is far from over.

Howard Mintz of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the Santa Clara City Council muat “continue to push through the countless procedural hoops” that remain.

On Tuesday, council members will vote on a $525,000 engineering contract associated with the relocation of an electric utility substation, a project that will account for $20 million of the $114 million in public funds to be devoted to the project.

The new stadium has a target date of 2014.

The biggest remaining challenge comes from the ability of the 49ers to secure financing for their considerable share of the costs of the stadium. Any struggles in this regard could lead to, possibly, the inclusion of the Raiders in the new venue and, theoretically, the scuttling of the project.
