None of us commenting on this list really know what Shanahan has in mind for Portis – - power runner, blocker, pass-catcher, all three, none of the above, some of the above.
The fact the Shanahan still has him as #1 in the mix tells me that Portis has improved over last year. How much? Only the first seven or eight regular season games will tell.
I’m willing to wait to offer an opinion until I see some real stats against real teams. Otherwise, I’d just be spouting noise for noise’s sake.

He’s good in protection. The problem is when he’s handed the ball. He leans so far forward that he falls down after very little or no contact.
After he went down last year the bench warmer backs the Skins put in looked like Barry Sanders compared to him.

They need an insurance policy if Portis does go down again. The redskins had Betts, Cartwright and Gaither. I think adding a Larry Johnson and a Willie Parker over guys that the Redskins had last year makes a lot of sense. And if Portis is so bad maybe you should check his stats before trolling. Even last year he averaged 4 yards a carry with an injury riddled offensive line.
