Jason Ferguson calls it quits

The Dolphins previously had planned to make it through the first half of the 2010 season without nose tackle Jason Ferguson, who had been suspended for eight games.  Now, they’ll have to start making plans for not having him during the second half of the year, too.

The Dolphins have announced that Ferguson has decided to retire from the game.

“Jason was a key contributor on three different teams for many years at
one of the NFL’s toughest jobs,” the recently reclusive Bill Parcells said in a statement released by the team.  “I am grateful and I
will miss him.”

“You get what you put into this game,” said Ferguson, who played for the Jets, Cowboys, and Dolphins.  “I would like to thank my family,
the fans and the organizations that I have been a part of for their
continued support throughout my career, it’s been an absolute blessing
to play this long.  I have built a lot of
relationships, you develop an extended family playing this game; I would
like to thank that extended family, the teammates, the coaches, the
support staffs that have all played a part of a great ride.”

The move comes seven years to the month after Dolphins running back Ricky Williams shockingly retired in the days preceding the launch of training camp.  As it turned out, Williams left under the threat of a one-year suspension for violating the substance abuse policy.  Given that Ferguson was suspended eight games for violating the steroids policy and thus was subject to enhanced testing, it’s possible (and we’re just speculating here) that something happened to put Ferguson in line for another suspension, and that he decided simply to call if quits.

Despite being suspended, Ferguson re-signed with the Dolphins for one year and $1.65 million in base salary.  To the extent that he received a signing bonus, he’ll have to give it back.

It’s hard to play well as an old guy without HGH. Just ask Brett Favre.

It was 2004 when Rickey retired. That was six years ago not seven! Get a calculator if you need it.

One of the best nose tackles in the game over the last decade…his true measure can be found when looking at the oppositions YPC average before and after Jason Ferguson. Wherever Jason Ferguson has gone, teams have seen at minimum a half yard per carry improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Whenever Jason Ferguson has left a team, that team went the other way and gave up at minimum a half yard per carry loss. This man filled the gap…
A true football warrior in every sense…As Bill said, Jason will be missed.

(Parcells) “Jason WHO? Tell him I was killed in a blimp explosion!”
    “And don’t send flowers!”
    “And don’t call back!”

    @Asswipe Johnson:
Totally agree. That guy was a beast in run defense.
My only problem with the trifecta is that they haven’t addressed the NT position since they got to Miami, which has been a glaring hole for years. The pressure is on Starks and even more on Solai to pick up the slack. I hope Solai steps up because he has the raw tools to be great.

Just ask Brett Favre? Clearly HGH is what helped him as a 39 year old QB beat your darling Packers……twice. Keep grasping at straws to figure 0ut why your team didn’t win the division….again…as everyone in the media wanted. Just keep mooning the visiting so Joe Buck can lose his mind when a player from another team PRETENDS

  11. NFL24/7 says: Jul 15, 2010 8:21 PM

Let’s make it about Brett Favre……original. Leave it to a Packer fan to make excuses on why a 39 year old QB beat their darlings…….twice…..and spoiled the media predictions that THEY were the team to beat…again. The Saints and Vikes were the two best teams last year and the Vikes (not just Favre or AP) made enough mistakes to lose to a very good team.

Bad news for the Dolphins defense, bad news for the Dolphins linebackers, and bad news for the Dolphins’ playoff chances.

I love playing the game of reading article on PFT and then guessing who wrote them. I won again with Florio after this line:
“Given that Ferguson was suspended eight games for violating the steroids policy and thus was subject to enhanced testing, it’s possible (and we’re just speculating here) that something happened to put Ferguson in line for another suspension, and that he decided simply to call if quits.”
It’s pretty easy actually wither he goes after someone with a remark that is almost slander or he makes the dumbest, lamest joke on the planet. It is the type of humor that an 8 year old would like except he would get the reference to 20 years ago. Isn’t that right Jeff Gilloolry (that was for you florio).

  15. paleandpasty says: Jul 15, 2010 9:12 PM

Hey Florio – Did maybe a season ending quad injury in which Ferguson missed 6 games also contribute to this decision too? No that might be too obvious.

  16. MrNatural says: Jul 15, 2010 10:26 PM

Always lookin’ for the bright side aren’t ya, Florio?

  17. bobinpuertorico says: Jul 15, 2010 11:00 PM

Miami will be better without him.

  18. TheSleepness says: Jul 15, 2010 11:35 PM

Ferguson was stout in the middle for a long time. 7th round pick to. shoot.

I bet you got beat up a lot in elementary school Florio. You are such a tool. Oh i forgot, you are a lawyer…..fits you well.

  20. bleedaqua13 says: Jul 16, 2010 3:19 AM

Starks is already the starting nose tackle

  21. Iron Wolf says: Jul 16, 2010 8:53 AM

Seven years to the month? Really, Florio? That’s about as eerie a coincidence as saying that both me and The Fonz are white guys. Aaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy!

The NFL says: untrue! no further violation was detected.
