Rex Ryan calls the Jets "the team to beat"

NFL_ryan1.jpgThe Jets soon will take center stage on HBO for the latest edition of Hard Knocks.  Already, the brash coach of the boldest team in the league has made his position known regarding the team’s prospects for 2010.

“The buzz is this is the team to beat,” Ryan says in a promo for the show, via Sean Leahy of USA Today.

Says Ryan of the team’s chances to finish their season with an appearance in the Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium, “I haven’t that Taj Mahal there in Dallas yet, but hopefully before this season is over we’ll be there.”

The only remaining question is whether they’ll have to buy tickets to get in.

    Rexy you are NOT sexy!
Your trash talking is so overdone. And quite frankly, you can compare yourself to TO because you both are amazing at producing fake tears!
Go eat another hamburger, Ravens are going to make you regret ever opening your mouth come MNF.

The Jets should be competitive but calling them the team to beat is just stupid. But then the Jets management, most of the players, and fans are pretty much dbags so what would you expect.

  7. The Real Shuxion says: Jul 16, 2010 12:11 PM

I am a big Pats fan. I think the Jets have a hell of a team. And I think they can make some noise again.
However I do believe the Pats are still going to win the division and be a major contender for the SuperBowl.

Well if everyone lets them walk into the playoffs again they just might be.

Quick Question: why is this even a story? The guy has been saying the same thing over past two years and this surprises people? He may be wrong he may be right, why don’t we just wait for the season to find out? Oh and by the way … he is right!!! haha

  11. JDMP says: Jul 16, 2010 12:12 PM

You can get this scoop anytime you talk to him.. Or most any coaches and players in the NFL…
If you don’t think your team is the team to beat then you should go play that Canadian game on ice where they sweep the snow.

OK. The whole refreshingly boisterous coach thing is getting old right aboooooooooooouuuuuuuuut… now.

Yeah Rex is buzzed allright, on a sugar high of epic proportions. Someone needs to take the 10 dozen donuts away from him, or the 5 dozen that are left.
They’ll be 8-8 this year with no playoffs for the Jests. Of course we know they play their Super Bowl in the regular season against the Pats anyway so what to the playoffs matter to them ?

Ryan didn’t say the Jets are the team to beat; he said ‘the buzz is’ they are the team to beat. He is pressuring his team to live up to their advance billing. Last season, they got off to a great 3-0 start, but then they got heady and faltered.

  53. TFBuckFutter says: Jul 16, 2010 12:45 PM

He also flexed his flabby arm a la Earthquake from the WWF in the early 90s as though there was a muscle there.
Then he said “Check out these lats.”

  54. clevefan4life says: Jul 16, 2010 12:51 PM

Can’t stand Rex Ryan. Though this site loves to twist words around. He said ‘the BUZZ is, we are the team to beat’. He wasn’t actually proclaiming that. I’d love it if Florio would post the rest of the conversation. That being said, a team full of ego’s, over-the-hill players and a qb that threw 20 sone picks last year ain’t winning squat.

  55. TheRedBengal says: Jul 16, 2010 12:52 PM

Rexy’s really setting himself up for his termination by overhyping up the team. Superbowl or bust, right?

  56. T-Money says: Jul 16, 2010 12:55 PM

Too bad the only place that buzz is coming from is the Jets locker room.

  57. fan15062 says: Jul 16, 2010 12:59 PM

Jets will be the team to beat and they will probably get beat 8 or 9 times (not counting pre-season).

  58. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Jul 16, 2010 1:03 PM

    Lovin’ the spin Florio!
He said that’s the “buzz.” Rex is no stranger to making bold predictions, but he isn’t guilty this time. Also, the whole “Taj Mahal” think was an answer to what Rex thought of the New Stadium, and he brought up the Cowboys stadium.
The Jets beat two decent teams in the playoffs that yes, they backed into but that Jet team was playing at 80%, with Kris Jenkins gone, no pass rush, weak spots in the secondary, no Leon Washington and Thomas Jones had nothing left. We brought in LT who is now equal to TJ, Greene is starting, we replaced Leon (but it might not work out,) brought in Santonio, filled in weaknesses in the DB’s, added a pass rusher and replaced the weak link in the O-Line.
So my question is, what exactly makes the Jets an 8-8 team or a 9-7 team? Sanchez threw at least 3 games away, and we lost 5 games by a touchdown or less. The Jets are very capable of going to the playoffs. I don’t mind people sleeping on us, it just makes it more fun when we exceed expectations.

  59. Marino13 says: Jul 16, 2010 1:03 PM

As a Fins fan, I can see them in the playoffs. I mean, a lot of times a game will come down to 1-2 plays. All that said, I can also see the Fins in the playoffs if the QB play is improved this year.
I think the issue is the Team to Beat thing.
I would think that the Colts or Ravens would be the team to beat in the AFC this year.
Colts went to the SB last year and looks good again this year. Ravens are always solid and if their QB performs better, they can go far.
If Sanchez comes along and has a good year, there is no reason that the Jets can’t be back in the AFC championship game, but are you confident enough to bet your house on it?

That’s why some players can’t play in NY. They can’t handle the pressure. Chuck Knobloch comes to mind. Kid was really good. Got to the Yankees and couldn’t hit the first baseman. Sad thing is that he played 2nd base!!

Jet fans are trolls & knuckle draggers? Yet read 80% of the posts here which are by Jets haters!
The only Neanderthals I see are those that can’t formulate a real opinion, so they just state what they figure to be obvious… most often, “Rex is fat,” or some variation thereof to make themselves appear witty and amusing.
The problem is I read this stuff and think, wow, so Pats fans are unoriginal (no shocker there), Dolfag fans are uninventive (unlike their team), Vikings fans care about the Jets (???), and Browns fans actually know how to read (WOW!).
I’m also thinking (and this is a novel idea so try and hang with me), post something that remotely resembles an original thought. Haters keep hating, that’s what I always say. I just wish I didn’t have to wade through so much moronic rhetoric to find a hater that actually has something “real” to say.
Maybe I’m just getting old (and I’m barely even 3 decades now), but how is it entertaining to be so stupid. It’s like slapstick comedy. Sure it’s funny the first time you see it, but no body wants to pay to seem the same show twice.
Alright that’s all I have to say. I’ll go back to my nap…

Yeah? And if the Dolphins didn’t choke their last 3 games the Jets wouldn’t have even gotten the shot! I don’t wanna hear the “let into the playoffs” excuse. It’s 100% true, but we weren’t “let” into the AFC Championship game. That is earned through tough playing, good coaching and of course, a good team.
Do you have any reasons for thinking the way you do? Or are you formulating an opinion because you’re a Dolphins fan and you hate us, because that’s what your kind seems do to.

The reality of it is both teams are very good. Better than they were in the past 2-3 years. We say your team sucks, you guys say our team sucks, and that’s the way it goes. It’s a rivalry. Deep down if a team really sucked no one would bother talking about it. Do you hear anyone talking about the Bills? No. (No offense Buffalo, but you guys are rebuilding this year)
Yes, NY Fans like that cocky, brash athlete/coach since they can relate to them.

I’ll say it again, this is an above average team, good enough to make the playoffs, but he’s painted too big of a target on his team for them to make the playoffs. Every team has extra motivation to beat them. I feel sorry for dirty sanchez. Miami Dolphins will be the golden gods that everyone talks about at the end of the year

You have to love the AFC East with so many Phins and Pats fans talking chit without proving anything in 2010. The Phins think Henne and Marshall will bring them to the promised land, while the Pats think it is Brady and Moss. At least the Jets base their confidence on broader team success.

I’ll go back to my nap…

look i hate the jets as much as the next guy but who cares…he’s the coach, i’d play for em…the afc east will produce the eventual superbowl entrant I feel, whether it’s the jets, dolphins, or pats is to be determined but all 3 are pretty formidable, i’d say.

  101. funi says: Jul 16, 2010 4:21 PM

Rex is liek his old man, all talk and won’t win anythih as a head coach! The paper champs lost 7 games last year, backed into playoffs when Indy QUIT! Look for a 8-9 win season and no playoffs this year Jet fan……………….

The buzz that Rex was referring to had something to do with getting a ride from the Meadowlands to Florham Park in Santonio Holmes car.

  104. GRpatriot says: Jul 16, 2010 5:53 PM

Yeah! Rex is a legend in his own mind! NY maybe. Everywhere else the buzz is between his ears! Then echo’s out of his piehole… yuk, yuk!

  105. andy reid's belt says: Jul 16, 2010 6:05 PM

Hey Halasfan…..First of all, I’m no fan of Andy Reid and secondly, Reid does have a ring as an assistant just like alot of other assistant coaches in the league. Buttie Ryan may have had some success as an assistant but he farted and fell as a head coach. As far as their sons are concerned, I’m sure Andy’s boys could help Buttie’s boys with diet pills.

anybody notice that the truely great coaches and super bowl winners are quiet and introspective,no bravado they just get their teams ready to play.
the only coach i can think of that was a tad vocal was jimmy johnson, but he backed it up …..repeatedly.

  108. HellRelle24 says: Jul 16, 2010 6:53 PM

and why do any of you even care about a dolphins fan opinion? we all know it means nothing. it took me too long to realize it.

It will be fun watching them crash and burn this year.

  112. HellRelle24 says: Jul 17, 2010 9:52 AM

and i think its hilarious how all you arrogant football fans think that such a talented and well coached team is going to crash and burn or “win 7 games”. idiots.

  113. JetsAreAJoke says: Jul 17, 2010 10:49 AM

and i think it’s hilarious how all you arrogant jests fans think that a team with history of failing and stinking up the league is going to go undefeated and win the SuperBowl. idiots.
SAME OL’ JESTS!!!!! It’s in their DNA.

  114. numberfour says: Jul 17, 2010 12:31 PM

8-8. to tell the truth, i think they have potential, but a lot of QB have a sophomore slump.
and it is sanchize’s 2nd year.

  116. HellRelle24 says: Jul 17, 2010 3:16 PM

no one ever said undefeated or superbowl…but its simple to say we will have a better season then the phins, i mean thats a given. and keep dreaming you will have another season sweep.
sanchez slumped lastyear lol im not worrying about a sophmore slump. hes got more weapons now and the best line and defense in the league backing him. he will be just fine.
as for your whle same ol jest, its in their dna shit, thats getting old and sounds just as stupid as it did the first time u posted it buddy

  117. JetsAreAJoke says: Jul 17, 2010 4:36 PM

What are you talking about? Don’t you even follow your own stupid team? Your stupid coach said they will go undefeated and will win the SB, so try to keep up huh. Of course it’s simple to say they’ll have a better season. Proving it will be the tough part for you stupid jests fans!!!!! And the season sweep of the Fins over the jokes….uh, jests…..is not a dream. It’s a nightmare for you stupid jests fans. AGAIN.
And while you’re at it, try to read the posts. The poster said he will have a sophomore slump not that he slumped last year. Last year he just sucked and he’ll suck even worse this year with the sophomore slump that most QBs experience. Are you kidding us with the “more weapons” crap? Jones was the best weapon he had and he’s gone. Best line? Again, are you kidding us? Faneca was their best run blocker and guess what. He’s gone too. And believe it when I tell you that now that teams have tape on the jests defense, it certainly won’t rank in the top ten.
And just because it’s true that it WAS, IS, and WILL BE the same ol’ jests, It’s in their DNA (see previous 40 years of mediocrety) don’t cry about it. Buddy.
SAME OL’ JESTS!!!!! It’s in their DNA.

Wrong, You’re the Jets You’ll find some way to screw it up then the team will be dismantled and rebuilt to what should be on paper again “the team to beat” and the cycle goes on. Ridicoulus! The Dolfins will come out of Nowhere this year and win the division! NY will finish 8-8! FAT! Incredible!

Again, who was playing the Colts last year in the AFC Championship game? Everybody saying that the Bengals laid down for the Jets to get into the playoffs, maybe they did, maybe the didnt. Apparently it didn’t matter though cause the Jets smacked that ass the next weekend, the Jets were the better team either way. The Jets beat the Chargers in their own house. The Jets went to the AFC Championship. Where were the Dolphins, Patriots, whatever team you might be a fan of? Oh, that’s right, probably on the couch, watching the Jets play.

  132. KoaMisiFan says: Jul 19, 2010 6:57 PM

So, the jests had their miracle season last year and still have nothing more to show for it than bragging rights that they lost in the AFC Championship game. Won’t happen again. History repeats itself and they’ll end up 7-9. Maybe 8-8 if the ball bounces their way a couple games. Oh, and the Commish made sure they got the SB in 2014, so I wouldn’t expect to see them get away with as many holding penalties that they did last year.
