Roethlisberger case spawns legal action for State Police

The Big Ben misadventures in Milledgeville have created plenty of problems for the Steelers’ starting quarterback.  The situation also has led to a presumably unwanted legal entanglement for the Pennsylvania State Police.

In the wake of the news that Ben Roethlisberger faced an allegation of sexual assault, reports emerged that Roethlisberger hired a pair of off-duty police officers to serve as his security guards.  And both men have experienced scrutiny in the wake of the disclosure that they were working on the side for Roethlisberger.

Coraopolis police officer Anthony Barravechio could lose his job, and the involvement of a Pennsylvania State Police employee on Roethlisberger’s security detail has resulted in an attempt by the Associated Press to obtain from the State Police records regarding employee moonlighting.

The State Police resisted, and the AP filed a claim with Pennsylvania’s open-records agency.  Per the AP, Pennsylvania’s open-records agency has ruled that the State Police must release the documents.

The AP apparently is interested in the full range of the moonlighting projects in which Edward Joyner has engaged, who reportedly has worked as Big Ben bodyguard, travel agent, contractor, dry cleaning deliveryman, personal shopper, car detailer, and valet, all while working sufficiently hard for the State Police to produce 602 hours of overtime in 2009.  Prior reports indicate potential inconsistencies in the paperwork regarding the approvals that Joyner obtained for his side projects, including a suggestion that a key signature was forged.

The State Police may appeal the decision, which would then place it into the Pennsylvania court system.

What a shock. A public employee looking to earn double time, while actually doing private work on the side and then the agency for which the person is employed will do everything in their power to hide the truth.
It’s just a good old fashioned shake down of the tax payers.

Not that I don’t appreciate what they do (In most cases they do great things for the community) but damn they make an ass load of money.
The best is when they look for donations. Because, 160,000 a year isn’t enough to live on.
Only taking 10% of my paycheck, boy are they sacrificing for me.
Am I jealous of them? Hell yeah I am. I am a Network Engineer, I picked the wrong field >_

This is a good example of the “Sunshine Laws” bearing fruit. Shine a big flood light on the subject of state police overtime abuses and let the taxpayers see what they are getting for their money.
Joyner is a dirty cop and needs to find another line of work; preferably one where he cannot fleece the taxpayers. Ben is likely to rape again and so he will need another look-out man so I wouldn’t worry too much about Joyner finding gainful employment.

Great job, AP. Start a witch hunt over a guy for working a side job. Who cares that he’s doing security, or basically being Big Ben’s personal assistant. He’s off the clock, he can do what he wants (it’s certainly not illegal to work more than one job).
And so what if the guy worked 602 hours of OT, that’s his prerogative. The work is there, and he signed up for it. If you think he’s taking free money, then go take the test to become a police officer and join in the “fun”.

Do you pay taxes in PA? Doesn’t sound like it. You sure are good at spending other people’s money, though.
I think the problem I and other people who pay taxes in PA might have (I don’t live there, but one of the companies I rep is there), is that it is somewhat hard to believe that this guy could work a full time schedule, plus around 12 hours A WEEK in overtime, plus travel around the country working for Big Ben. Sounds a little hard to believe, doesn’t it?
Or are you one of the people (maybe a cop yourself) who feels that officers live above the law they are sworn to uphol, and that ordinary civilians should never question anything they do?

For starters nice job spinning the argument by using only a rookie wage to make my number seem like a major exaggeration.
You are right the cops are severely underpaid. They should all get raises.

Well since we’re recycling old news and adding nothing new to the discussion, might as well revisit what “ampats” did.
March 2010: Screams his outrage over what Ben R. allegedly did — with a 20-year-old WOMAN — because hey, ampats has a daughter, for Pete’s sake! Has nothing to do with his hatred of the Steelers of course.
May 2010: As news of Lawrence Taylor’s arrest — for doing something bad with a 16 year-old GIRL — breaks, does ampats express his outrage? No, he tells us to hold the jokes please. Hold… the… jokes.
You can’t make this stuff up.

Here is something to report on: 10/17/10, Ben’s likely return date. It will be a great day for Ben, the Steelers and Steeler fans. Football season is almost upon us, thank goodness. Enough of the off-season already!!

Dude, are you REALLY this obtuse????
Florio doesn’t have an issue with working OT. What he’s basically saying is – How do you work 40 hours a week, then 600 hours of OT, and THEN work oodles of hours to be Ben’s personal assistant? In other words, somewhere, somehow paperwork was fraudently submitted for hours never worked! Remember, it’s not whether mathematically the hours all work. He MUST be WELL RESTED before he starts his shift for his and the citizens safety. These are rules just like no drinking so many hours before work etc.
Florio, there was no “suggestion” made about a forged signature. The supervisor who’s signature appears on the paperwork flat out said it wasn’t his signature, therefore it is indeed a forged document and now a criminal offense.

  46. Dutch70 says: Jul 16, 2010 2:12 PM

    ========================
No, and the signature wasn’t my contention. My issue derives from comments made about him ripping off taxpayers (by posters) for his amount of overtime, and overtime only. If there were improprieties, then by all means discipline, or fire his ass. If not, then this is a witchhunt. Having seen and dealt with papers opining about how “rich civil servants get off the taxpayers dollar”, I can assure this is what the writer, if anything else, will get people outraged over, even if the signature issue is a dead one.
Having said that, if this POS is having his Sargent, Corporal, or whomever sign his OT sheet willfully and intentionally incorrectly, then he and his supervisor should be fired. For as much as it ruffles my feathers when people complain about the money cops, fireman, and teachers (some of them anyway) make, it enrages me far more when someone is screwing the system and making it even harder for people like myself to make a decent wage.
