Shawn Andrews, Charles Grant, others land in Omaha

To date, former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has not yet reciprocated the interest of the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks

But other former NFL players have.  Plenty of them.

The Nighthawks have posted at their website an impressive roster of fallen stars who still may have some football left in them.

The list includes, among others, former Eagles guard Shawn Andrews, former Saints defensive end Charles Grant, former Cardinals defensive tackle Wendell Bryant, former Steelers and Panthers cornerback Ricardo Colclough, former Raiders receiver Ronald Curry, former Raiders running back Justin Fargas, former Packers and Vikings receiver Robert Ferguson, former Seahawks, Packers, and Texans running back Ahman Green, former first-round quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and former Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter.

Earlier this week, the Nighthawks apparently jumped the gun, posting various names on their roster before the players actually had agreed to terms.  We’re in the process of confirming that the current roster is indeed legit, and not a mistake.

  1. I thought the UFL was hoping to become the minors league of professional football? So why sign a bunch of older former pros?

  2. So in other words, this list of players are merely guys that Omaha has the rights to, but may or may not have actually signed, and you don’t really know anything yet. Thanks for the misleading headline though.

  3. “So why sign a bunch of older former pros?”
Its called marketing and name recognition, they want to get asses in seats. The other 40 players on the team are the developmental ones from the NFL’s viewpoint.

Familiar names give them the best chance of creating enough fan interest to see a second season.

  5. @chipwade: Minor league rosters, triple A rosters in particular, are full of older, former big leaguers. Besides, a lot of guys on that Nighthawks list are young enough to springboard back into the NFL.

  6. ok, first, to everyone asking why the UFL is signing these guys, its because they need SOMETHING to spark the interest of the average football fan, and its easier to do it with some former NFL players, rather than a bunch of guys right out of college whose names werent called at the NFL Draft
secondly, FLORIO – why not wait the extra 10-15mins to confirm something first, instead of posting something you’re not 100% sure of?

  7. hahaha, you called ex-Raiders “fallen stars”….theres no such thing as Raiders stars to begin with, you crazy bastard!

  8. Sorry this is a serious, non-snarky comment, but why is JaMarcus Russell listed on the Omaha Nighthawks roster? It’s right there on the link that you posted in the story.

  9. I lived in Kansas City long enough to know that those poor people in that area need a better football team to watch for a while.

  10. John El Way. Quit drinking the Hatoraide! Just cuz the raiders dominated the donkeys for so long, you don’t have to be bitter. With out Horseface, yourself, you’d still be nothing. Wait to see tebow walk on water and get knocked the F*CK out by ‘no gain’ McClain!

  11. Justin Fargas should still be the NFL. He may not be a full-time starter but he could play a significant role in a rotation.
The problem is that he is injury prone and has taken a hell of a lot of punishment. Even so, I find it hard to believe he couldn’t he couldn’t make it onto an 80-man training camp roster somewhere.

  12. Justin Fargas and Charles Grant can still be effective NFL players. Both guys (especially Grant) shouldn’t be on UFL rosters.

  13. whats all this Raider talk.. the bucs are the biggest bag of suck in the league. they have only brought in young talent for the past two years and their roster is still one of the oldest in the league.
    suck suck suck..
Sean Andrews is a big bag of shit, that stinks like stale vagina.. he coulda (could) be one of the greatest OL but he’s a wimp. His back has problems from carrying his ego.

  14. @Horseface El Way. We have been down for 7 years, yes. And even though we are the “joke”, we still own your ass 56-41 in the series. And last time I checked, our trophy case if much fuller than yours! Get some Hay

Shawn Andrews? How is this (crazy) guy not on an NFL roster?
–Because he lost the desire to play in the NFL. He would rather sit around, make crappy music and use twitter. That is why he is out of the NFL. He is like Jamarcus Russell, except the eagles actually got production out of him before he quit.

I’LL GO ALONG WITH THAT, BUT I’D HAVE TO SAY THAT THE NUMEROUS BACK SURGIES, AND THE FACT THAT HE PLAYED 2 GAMES IN 2 YEARS, BUT MADE PILES OF CASH, HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH HIS RELEASE AS WELL.

  17. Shaun Andrews could have been one of the best OL ever. But he can’t take life in the closet. He should just come out and find happiness.

  18. All Shawn Andrews is going to do is sign a contract then claim hhis back hurts and is depressed. Then lay on his fat a$$ at home collecting a free paycheck just like he always has done.

  19. Horseface, we’ve split the series the last two years….., so I’m not sure that you won that either. At least we have Nostalgia. Nice try, again. Good luck with your squad this year winning 6 games. Keep looking up at us

  20. @420
24 and 72 in the last 6 years
Say hello to lala land for me.
    Say no to drugs kids

  21. I don’t know why these roster additions are news.
I have learned, however, through my exclusive sources, that Rae Curruth has signed with Omaha.

  22. How in the world did Charles Grant not get snapped up by somebody in the NFL? He had 6 sacks last year unless I’m mistaken. 6 sacks isn’t something to take lightly in a season, though I realize he’s not Pro Bowl material. Still, I thought someone like the Redskins might have taken him.
