Ryan: "It's time to win a Super Bowl"

I returned from vacation last night, having learned a few football-related things from my time away.

1. You can learn a lot from Bob McGinn’s Ultimate Super Bowl Book.

2. I’m late to the party, but Friday Night Lights has wedged itself in my top five shows of all-time, probably top-three.  What’s better than a football show your wife loves more than you?

Another contender for top-five status would be Hard Knocks, the annual HBO series filed during an NFL training camp.

This year has potential to be even better than last season’s strong effort, with Rex Ryan and his band of all stars ready to make some magic.  We can’t imagine another coach reading a voice-over that ends:  “Let’s go out and kick some ass. It’s time to win a Super Bowl.”

(And yes, this entire post is an excuse to show a cool little promo on a July afternoon when absolutely nothing is happening in the NFL.)

Friday Night Lights is a superb show but they only show about 6 seconds of Football per episode.
And enough with the NY Jest (Yes, Jest) talk.
Cromartie and LT will flop like Sanchez. The Patriots and Dolphins are the class of this division despite Jest playoff push.
Hell, Who wouldn’t get past the first found if you had the Bungles to compete against.

Hopefully somebody else will be nice enough to let them into the playoffs this year.

He should be coaching the Vikings, their fan base is as delusional as Ryan with just about the same chance to actually win a Superbowl, zero.

Should be good stuff for Hard Knocks this season.
Maybe Joe Namath will make an appearance with Suzy Kolber.

Lol. That’s weak Gregg. Plus, Friday Night Lights isn’t a football show. It’s a glorified soap opera with 5 minutes a football each episode.

“Friday night Lights” is a pathetic show that should have been off the air after it’s first season.
“Hard Knocks” although decent, doesn’t really interest me all that much. I’m not sure why, as I love everything that has to do with NFL football. For some reason I just can’t get into it.
The Jets? Easily the most over hyped team of this off-season.

  23. 8man says: Jul 17, 2010 7:47 PM

This is great! And they open the new stadium against Baltimore!
So now we have the Jets smack and the continuation of the Favre saga to spice up the year.
It’s not a season, it’s 32 soap operas with 60 minutes football thrown in each week.
Nice. Can we just skip those stupid 4 preseason, exhibition, charge the fan for crap, games?

  24. Dave says: Jul 17, 2010 7:50 PM

  25. smithopher says: Jul 17, 2010 7:51 PM

Everybody can say what they want about the Jets, they’re gonna light your team up this season if given the chance. They hit hard and have some of the best players in football and they show up to play when it matters. All these people talking smack about them not playing in a Super Bowl, if Shonn Greene didn’t go down they might not have ever lost that lead to the Colts. The Colts had no answer for him and the score showed that. The Jets aren’t some joke, they’re gonna back up the talk this year.

  26. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Jul 17, 2010 8:14 PM

Does anyone have a good reason for believing that the Jets aren’t a playoff team besides “HURP DURP 7th WORST TEAM DURRRR JESTS HURP EGOZ FATMAN DIRTY SANCHEZ HURRRR DNA?” The Jets showed what they were capable of in the playoffs, and we certainly upgraded in the offseason.

  27. MSWRavens says: Jul 17, 2010 8:31 PM

The funniest thing about this is that Ryan is simply plagirizing his former boss. Go pop in your 2000 Baltimore Ravens tape (Ryan was an asst to Marvin Lewis on D that season) & you’ll see Brian Billick say “Men, it’s time to go win a Super Bowl”
Now, most everyone outside Bmore thought Billick was an asshole (but he was out asshole, so we loved him). To give you an idea of how much more gigantic an a-hole Rex Ryan is over Billick, consider that Billick at least waited until the Ravens made the POs before talking that smack. Ryan is just a bloated loudmouth who can coach the hell out of a defense, no doubt. But I’m at a loss to understand how the Jets improve by cutting/trading Faneca, Jones, Washington & pissing off Mangold…and picking up LT & Cromartie & Holmes. Holmes will be a good addition, once he returns from suspension, because Sanchez will need all the YAC Holmes can give them… They’ll lean more on Sanchez, and he will fold. He certainly dfidn’t have the frosh campaign that Flacco or Ryan had…you blind eyed Jets fans might want to look at the numbers before you get excited about the pretty boy…and recognize that like the Bengals, your running game wont be as good as last year and won’t prop up a lame passing attack!
…and O yeah…you can’t think of another coach who would say “Lets go out and kick some ass…” Really? Bunch of pussy coaches in this league, you think? That language is too tough? Gimme a break, and stop trying to make Rex Ryan into some kind of mythical figure. Every coach in this league talks like that, and probably even stronger.

Wise man MSWRavens. Stupid jests fans can’t figure out that without the good running game, Sancheezy will be the perfect symbol of their team. A big joke. Greene will either get injured or wear down quickly and LT will be shown to have had a good year last year with his 3.3 average.

  32. sharkattack says: Jul 17, 2010 10:17 PM

Man, all you Jets haters are going to be sorely disappointed when LT rushes for 165 yds on 178 carries. Holmes will smoke….your….. I forgot. My boy Braylon “Hands of Stone” Edwards will have a bounce back year and once again lead the league in drops. Cromartie will lead the league in illegitimate children, and do well in the Dime-back slot. Revis will pick-off his 7th of the year and return it all the way to Oakland (where Al Davis will promptly sign him to a 2 year, 200 million dollar deal.)
Sanchez is so bad, he isn’t even worthy of a joke.

Do I have statistical evidence to back up what I am about to say? No. Of course not. Thats why they play the game yadda yadda yadda.
Having said that, the Jets smack me of this year’s version of “That Team”. Every year there is “That Team” that everyone is high on because they came out of nowhere and had a big year. Everyone predicts “That Team” will build off of last year’s success and make that big playoff push, and some people pick them for the Super Bowl. “That Team” often gets all the media hype all offseason, and and a solid number of primetime games (Sunday or Monday). And, every year, “That Team” falls flat on thier face, sometimes due to mounting injuries, somtimes due to playing over their heads the year before, sometimes a combo of the two. 2009’s “That Team” was the Atlanta Falcons, 2008’s “That Team” was the Cleveland Browns, 2007’s “That Team” was the (suprise suprise) New York Jets. If you remember, Jets fans, 2007 was the Jets Year! You had just finished 10-6 or so and were about to get over the hump to the Super Bowl. Eric Mangini wasn’t known as “the moron Mike Holmgren was going to fire at the end of the 2010 season” or “that jerk that ratted out his former boss to take the pressure off him in the New York media”. He was “The ManGenius”! The guy with the brains to get the Jets to Lombardi Glory! Smarter Than Belichick!
How did that 2007 season go for the Jets? Because you guys are going to feel like you’re living in a freaking time loop come January. How do you spell Eternal Letdown? J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!

Why can’t Jet fans be realistic and just admit the truth. You were handed a playoff spot. Your team was only 7-7 before you had two teams roll over for you. You douchepuppets act like your team was 12-4 last year. The Jets are easily the most over hyped team coming into this season and I personally am going to enjoy watching them get the snot kicked out of them this year. Sanchez – he was teriffic in playoffs and he won 2 playoff road games as a rookie QB.
so all you loser’s can hate all day, bottom line is this team easily goes 11-5 and wins AFC east finally this year. And if they can find a way to stop Peyton and his rockets at WR then yeah the SB is a reality.

  49. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Jul 18, 2010 12:10 PM

    @Belichick for President
You’re right, that could happen. It’s totally possible we could fall flat on our faces. And I wouldn’t be much more disappointed than any given year. I definitley agree with you on the point that the Jets are “that team” but if you doubt the ability of the Jets to make the playoffs (and not a fluky, illegitamate way like last year) you need to take the homer googles off. (and for the record, I never think of a specific year as “our year.” I didn’t think we’d make it with Favre, I didn’t think Mangini was a good coach (ever) and I didn’t think we’d beat the Colts last year.)
If you watched the Jets in the playoffs, and i’m sure you did Mr. Patriot, you saw Sanchez showing that he can effectively manage a game, while making good decisions and throwing an occasional long ball. This was refreshing after a terrible season. If he continues on this path, he’ll be comparable to Joe Flacco. Someone earlier had mentioned that the Colts had no answer for Shonn Greene until he got injured, and while it is an excuse, it’s a pretty good one. Shonn Greene is gonna have a breakout year if he stays healthy. LT I believe will benefit from the offensive style we have, while being a backup. My grandmother could gain yards running behind the Jets O-line. Same thing with Cromartie, who will benefit from our mostly man coverage scheme, which he flourished under with the Chargers in 2007. He also fills a disgustingly bad weakness that was Lito Sheppard. Jason Taylor is certainly over the hill, but he’s capable of 4 sacks at least, and that will be very helpful. The Jets suffered from a lack of pass rush last year. Really, the only guys I don’t know about are Brodney Pool and Joe McKnight.
We’re capable of going to the playoffs easily, and don’t worry, we’ll be there.

Maybe because the intelligent fan knows that #1 defense only beat TWO teams with winning records (HOU, NE), TWO .500 teams (TN, CAR), and THREE teams with a combined 14-34 record (OAK, BUF, TB). We’re not going to even mention the last two games where the Colts and Bungles laid down for them. They also lost to THREE teams with winning records (NO, NE, ATL) and THREE teams with losing records (Miami twice with a first year starting QB, BUF, JAX). As for them getting better, I just don’t see it. Cromartie is afraid to tackle and now the opposing teams have some film to study on them. First year teams most always look pretty good until the other teams have something to study on them.

@keith brodeur….one of the best posts Ive read. Jets fans are not only morons but delusional as well. You look at the teams they play and have to laugh. Throw the facts in the argument and they shut right the F up. That defense was so over rated not to mention the rest of the league has studied it now. That retard Sanchez threw over 20 picks last year and now the league has had a whole offseason to study him as well. It makes me laugh that the Jets fans are such douchebags that they think because two teams laid down for them, then they got lucky enough to play the BENGALS (LMFAO) and a team that ALWAYS implodes that they are actually going to win the Super Bowl. Hey Jets fans…maybe thats exactly what your own teams ownership was hoping for when they signed all these hasbeens…the fact that your stupid enough to believe the hype and run out and spend money on PSLs to make them even richer. The joke will be on you. 41 years and counting.

  57. NYJALLFINGDAY says: Jul 18, 2010 7:56 PM

    @Keith Brodeur
That would be an excellent point if you didn’t judge by the final word alone. An intelligent fan knows that only the first Miami game, the Jacksonville game and the Atlanta game could our defensive play be called “poor.” An intelligent fan knows that Mark Sanchez threw, the New Orleans game, (where the defense played excellent, might I add) the first Buffalo game, and the second New England game. An intelligent fan knows one of our few weaknesses on defense was the poor performance of Lito Sheppard, and at times, Kerry Rhodes. Both players are no longer Jets and we filled those holes with Cromartie and Brodney Pool. An intelligent fan knows that Cromarties remarkable season came when the Chargers played in man coverage, which is what the Jets play most. An intelligent fan knows his decline came whilst playing in zone coverage.
However, it’s quite obvious you don’t know anything about being an intelligent fan.

Sounds to me like a very intelligent fan. NO jests fan will ever think anyone makes sense unless they blindly follow the bull the coach and fans spew regularly.

So when Mark Sanchez throws 5 interceptions in the Buffalo game, and the Jets lose by a field goal in overtime, or in the New Orleans game, he throws a bunch of INTS, 1 for a touchdown, and fumbles one in the endzone, which was recovered by NO, who only managed to score one offensive touchdown, that’s not one player losing games for the entire team? Come on now.
Way to stereotype, buddy. I think it’s possible we can make it to the Super Bowl, we almost did last year. By no means is it a given. There are 16 games to play first.
Don’t peg me as an idiot because i’m a fan of a historically disappointing team with a brash, confident coach.

Let’s get the facts stright. He was a rookie QB and most rookie QBs struggle.
YOUR fan base was talking him up to be a great rookie QB, we merely pointed out his 12Tds 20Ints.
We can agree that Matt Ryan was a good rookie QB and he had 16 tdsm, 11 ints. That’s a pretty significant difference.
Even Chad Henne had 12 tds 14 int in 2less games. Not very good either, but better than Sanchez.
We still don’t know which QB will be better between Sanchez and Henne, but Henne does have more overall experience with being a 4 year starter in college, etc, so I would have to probably give him and edge.
At the end of the day, you guys will say that Sanchez is better and we’ll say that Henne is better, but unless these guys step up their game this year, it’s going to be a long season.

You can’t win a SB with that loser Sanchoke on your roster.
That kid can’t play without a lead and his 20 picks were pathetic… considering he was muzzled for the later part of the season.

    @ SomeFans
Either you’re 12 years old or just plain stupid. That kid was a ROOKIE. How many rookie QBs do you remember having instant success at the NFL level? It typically takes 3-4 seasons to realize a “bust”. Drew Brees was a disaster before San Diego traded for Rivers. Your hatred for the Jets has clearly compromised your ability to think objectively. My 5 year old daughter is more rational than you are.

Before last season started he was the “Sanchise”
Now he’s a “Rookie” who we should wait on lol

Apparently, whenever I know I’m losing an argument and don’t have anything else to defend my side, I just call the other person(people) a hater and I win the argument. I did not know that is how it worked. Just so you “likers” know, the only team I like is the Bears. So yes, I “hate” the other 31 teams. And you should too.
