Randle El: Dan Snyder held Jim Zorn back

In the days following Jim Zorn’s firing, not many people stuck up for his coaching abilities, outside of saying what a nice guy he was.  Former Redskins receiver Antwaan Randle El, however, says Zorn never really got a fair chance because of meddlesome ownership.

“When Jim Zorn was there, he was
hands-on,” Randle El told the Northwest Indiana Times. “He had great potential, but  Dan Snyder was too involved because he didn’t trust coach
Zorn as much as he did coach (Joe) Gibbs, and those were things
that prevented us from success as a team.”

There are many reasons why the Zorn era didn’t work.  There are even more reasons why the Redskins have recorded a 80-96 record since Snyder took over.

Snyder figures to take the same approach with new coach Mike Shanahan that he took with Gibbs, which can only be a good thing.

the less snyder has to do with that team (other than signing paychecks) the better. just because someone was a great business man, doesn’t mean he knows thing one about how to build a football team. I can imagine that he wants to be the next steinbrenner, jerry jones or al davis. the difference is that all 3 of these guys have/had a knack for knowing the game and what it took to win.
all this guy does is throw money around and expect results without thinking about things like character, chemistry and depth.
i like shanny a lot, and i hope that he is successful there, but i really don’t foresee him being much better (maybe a handful of playoff wins) than gibbs was his second time around.

Who was the invisible man holding him back when he caught a punt. Has to be the reason he danced for 3 yards and fell down.

So LiL Danny messed with Zorn so that was Zorn’s excuse for sucking. But what was your excuse Randel El? You got payed big bucks and produced dick. Was LiL Danny your krypotnite as well?
Regardless, good riddance Randel El. Hopefully for your sake Steelers fans will appreciate the TD level celebrations you will perform after making routine 1st down catches. It got old real quick during your stay in DC.

you said it perfect. Did danny let the ball hit him in the face mask while you were trying to field punts. did danny put glue on j.c.’s hands so the ball stuck to it and he couldnt get rid of it? i did like the fact zorn wouldnt play marko mitchel who is on his 3rd team since being cut.

I appreciate that Randle El busted his butt when he was in Pittsburgh, and I appreciate that he threw a TD pass to help my team win its first Super Bowl in 26 years. I also appreciate that the Rooneys are FAR too smart to overpay for a WR/PR. I’m sure the guy gave it his best while he was in DC. He has less to give now than he did the first time around, but he’ll do his best.
Your owner is a jackass and the reason for the decline of a once-great franchise. Randle El wasn’t in a position to make or break your team no matter how he performed. Don’t kill the messenger for telling the truth as he saw it.

I don’t understand Dan Snyder. He is a lousy business man. A good business man knows the phrase “due diligence” backwards and forwards. Where was due diligence when he signed all those past-their-prime players. Where was due diligence when only a little checking would clearly expose that Haynesworth would not react well to too much money up front.
What about all the leaks out of the front office about who the front office likes and dislikes? This clearly undermines lower level managers. A good businessman would not do that. Some journalists have confessed that some of the leaks came from Snyder himself.
I don’t know how he became rich, but, clearly, a good businessman he is not.

  44. WetHog says: Jul 18, 2010 10:47 PM

    @Deb
Randel El ran his mouth throughout his DC tenure in the press and never backed it up on the field. And he even had the stones to get pissy when it was suggested by the coaching staff that someone else field punts.
The guy cashed in while in DC. Can’t fault him for taking the money and running. But his tenure in DC was a joke and for him to run his mouth after he left blaming Zorn’s incompetence on LiL Danny Snyder is bullshit. LiL Danny probably butted in because he figured out Zorn wasn’t up to the mental challenge of being a head coach.
LiL Danny isn’t the greatest, but he spends money. He didn’t become a billionaire by being stupid, and no he didn’t inherit his money or his team like the Rooney’s did. One of these days he’ll figure it out.
And don’t wax on about the Rooney’s being all great. They used to be the gold standard for team owners in my mind right up until they gave Rothlesburger a pass on drugging young women. I guess getting caught with a little pot (Holmes) is worse than drugging young girls in the eyes of the Rooney’s.

  45. ppdoc13 says: Jul 18, 2010 10:54 PM

The Danny has no one to blame but himself for the Zorn fiasco. Zorn was a very very talented QB coach. He should have been bumped up to OC, but the Danny knew that by bumping up to HC he would be beholden to the Danny. This way the Danny could be involved in game plans etc. I know this for fact because a patient of mine is in the Redskin organization. The Danny reviewed game plans, calls, etc.
The original plan was for Jim Fassel to be the HC with Zorn as the OC. This would have been a good solution. Fassel had HC experience and success as well.
But the Danny has his own way of doing things. The employees are told not to look him in the face and he is to be referred to as Mr. Snyder. The little shit is a megalomaniac with a major Napoleon complex.
As long as he owns that team, they are destined to fail. Like Peter Angelos in Baltimore, the Danny is cursed by his ego. Couldn’t happen to a better team. From the racial bigot George Preston Marshall, to the ego driven Jack Kent Cooke who named the town where he built that lousy stadium RalJon after his boys, to the Danny the Foreskins have had some real winners as owners. At least the first two knew how to either run a team or hire people and let them do their job. The Danny hasn’t learned that lesson. We’ll see how short the leash is for Bruce Allen and Shanny. If the Foreskins go 500 it will be a good year but to the Danny it will be a monumental failure. Except that is for making a ton of money by charging his fan base to breathe the air in the stadium, fart out loud, and get to watch football in a lousy venue. I’ve seen over a dozen stadiums throughout the NFL. It is the worst out there. Since the Iggles got rid of the Vet, FedEx field takes top prize for the lousiest stadium I have had the pleasure of attending. But it makes sense, look at the owner.

Snyder wanted Fassel but didnt hire hime because the fans went crazy when it got out. Marshall was racist. so were alot of people back then. Everyone called Snyder a moron when he handed number 1 receiver money to a number 3 receiver. Turned out everyone was right.
Randle El’s back to being a number 3 on the Steelers and he’ll probably do well in that role.
If the Skins fans are hating on anyone it should be Snyder who keeps giving over-priced contracts to over-hyped free agents. You can’t expect the free agents to turn down all those extra millions.

  55. OranjelloJones says: Jul 19, 2010 10:21 AM

Because he didn’t have a Herschel Walker to trade some other foolish team an entire draft for hank, it’s not Rocket Surgery.
The key stat is that Snyder’s team has won more playoff games than Jerrah’s has since Snyder came into the league. You know that decade which Jerrah had the show all to himself and didn’t have Jimmy J running the show for him. Again: 3 straight 5-11 seasons with guys like Campo and Gailey running the ship. Sheer genius at work there without a doubt….the stuff football legends are made of.

  56. Mike Daly says: Jul 19, 2010 10:38 AM

Shanahan’s Broncos teams consistently quit on him down the stretch after Elway retired.
Saying the Dan Snyder Deadskins have won more playoff games than the Cowboys since Snyder purchased the team isn’t relevant to anything, because the Deadskins have no muscle to go anywhere – you have to research to find the playoff games the Dan Snyder Deadskins have won since he took over.

  57. OranjelloJones says: Jul 19, 2010 10:47 AM

The point is completely relevant when interacting with a mentally challenged Cowboy fan. Anytime a Cowboy fan yaps about playoff success or the last decade or criticizes Snyder as an owner they have absolutely zero leg to stand on when their own owner makes Snyder seem competent by comparison over the same time frame. Like it or not, spin it however you want, those are undeniable facts. Snyder has been a textbook study in how to NOT run a football team, but he learned everything he’s screwed up from Jerry Jones.
Cowboy fans and owner smack…HAH! Thanks for the laughs!

    *******************
When Jimmy went to Dallas, all he had to do was replace one legend, Tom Landry but in Miami, he had to replace two, Shula and Marino but Marino wouldn’t go away. Remember, Shula had Marino for several years and the best HE could do was a Super Bowl drubbing. Hell, Don went to two Super Bowls with two “lesser” QBs and won 2 others with a supposedly “lesser” QB but no one has used that against Marino. I also think it’s funny that when Marino came up for the HOF, a lot of people in the media were swooning all over the guy and talking about how he deserved it but then when 3 time Super Bowl winner, Troy Aikman, was up for the voting, they were talking about how he was just a caretaker QB (To this day, Mike Golic will argue about Aikman’s qualifications).

  59. OranjelloJones says: Jul 19, 2010 11:23 AM

    Come on edgy…seriously?
Aikman’s numbers pale in comparison to the statistically greatest passer of all time. He also played on a team that had a much better defense, arguably the greatest O line of all time (although as a Skins fan I’d argue against that with the 91 team), ridiculous talent at 3 WR slots and borderline HOF talent at TE. Then you throw in the numbers that Emmitt could be counted on and comparing the two QB’s isn’t even reasonable.
There really is no comparison and I think even Troy would tell you that. By comparison he WAS a caretaker, although arguably the greatest caretaker the NFL has ever seen. Marino is arguably the greatest QB the league has ever seen…period. Aikman doesn’t even make it into that conversation as good as he was. THAT’S why the drastic difference in their HOF candidacies.

    ****************
2-3 vs 1-5 and more importantly, NEITHER of those two were ever on the field BUT if they were, Jerry would run over his ass. Snyder’s got 1 more win but 2 less appearances. Snyder’s teams have 3 winning seasons while Dallas has had 6, the last 5 in a row. Jones ran Parcells out of town but not before Bill gave him 3 winning seasons in 4 and put the franchise back on track while Snyder ran Marty Schottenheimer out of town when it looked like the team had turned the corner after an 0-5 start (Which is ironic because the Redskins stood behind their rookie head coach who started his career 0-6 and finished up 8-8 and went on to win a few Super Bowls after they stayed out of his way) and hired Steve Spurrier (Apparently, Jerry Jones-lite wanted to emulate Jerry’s Johnson to Switzer move).

  61. AlphaQ2 says: Jul 19, 2010 11:38 AM

You’ve tried the hired the 3 time Super Bowl winner thing before but fail to ever address the fact that it’s nuked by Howdy Doody firing not one, not two but 3 Hall of Fame coaches and allowing the local legend and classiest of them all to find out about it through the freakin’ Newspaper.

Ok, genius, what three HOF coaches did he fire?

    @Wet Hog …
No one was accused of drugging anyone. You’re like the kid on the playground who has nothing useful to say so he yells, “Yo Mama!” Grow up.
Art Rooney bought the Steelers with money he won playing the ponies at Saratoga, and son Dan turned them into a winning franchise. These aren’t “silver spoon in the mouth” guys. One reason for their success is they don’t foolishly throw around money like Snyder does. It’s longstanding policy not to spend big bucks on receivers who only touch the ball a few times a game. Holmes’s contract was due to expire at the end of 2010 and the Rooneys were not going to pay what it would take to re-sign him. They got rid of him a little early because of his MULTIPLE run-ins with the law and disciplinary problems. That’s smart management.
Randle El wasn’t worth what Snyder paid by a long shot. And how many years does a guy have to underperform at punt returning before you stop letting him return punts?
Snyder may be an excellent businessman … but that has nothing to do with being a football guy. The Rooneys are football people. Snyder is not–and he doesn’t seem to have the sense to hire football people and get out of their way. He may one day mature enough to let the football folks do their jobs without his interference. But don’t hold your breath waiting for him to morph into a football person himself. And no matter how much he ran his mouth, Randle El is no more to blame for Washington’s long-term problems than Zorn was. Your owner has created your misery.

Apparently my answer to your Marino tripe was too long but if you’re interested in seeing how wrong you are:

I’m waiting, what three HOF coaches did Jerry Jones fire?

  73. Deb says: Jul 19, 2010 7:43 PM

Don’t want a piece of this debate, but am tired of seeing that easily answered question just hanging.
Johnson surely would have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer if he’d taken the 90s ‘boys to four consecutive Super Bowls … which was feasible. And he still may get HoF consideration at some point. Jones may not have fired all of them but driving them away with constant interference amounts to the same thing:
    1. Landry
    2. Johnson
    3. Parcells
    Okay, y’all carry on.
Hi, Vox … long time, no see.

Too bad that you whiffed. First off, future HOF had nothing to do with this debate and only ONE of the guys is in the HOF and that’s Landry. Second of all, he did NOT fire Parcells so he lost TWICE (and you followed him into the abyss) on that remark.

  75. edgy says: Jul 19, 2010 11:27 PM

Deb, I’ll give you an A for effort. BTW, I’m from Chicago and I once told someone that while I was in Chicago, I was always at the top of my class but NEVER got an A OR a B and he said that they must have been really stupid and then I explained that at the time, Chicago didn’t use A through F and the top grade was E, for excellent and I was a straight E student. :)

Landry’s in the hall, Johnson would have been in but for his feud w/Jones, and Parcells will be in five years after he retires or dies holding a clipboard. I clearly said Jones didn’t fire all of them. You were so anxious to tell me I’m whiffing and falling that you didn’t read the post. I’ve got real clear vision where you’re concerned, so I’m not likely to stumble into any abysses conjured up in your SCOTUS posts.
And like I said, I have NO interest in pursuing this. Bye.

Randle el blows most of you trolls are just haters. Cowboys fans can talk all they want, but they will see the Redskins first game of season and then they will STFU. Whether you guys like it or not the Redskins have hired a future hall of fame coach and a great staff. It wont be such an easy win when the Redskins arent having play calls by Jim Zorn. If it wasnt obvious enough last season it will be this one.
