Ed Reed: Troy Smith more than qualified to be backup

E. Reed.jpgRavens players continue to roll out the welcome wagon for new teammate Marc Bulger.

A day after Joe Flacco wondered how Bulger would fit into the quarterback room, Ravens safety Ed Reed said the team essentially doesn’t need the pricey backup.

Speaking on 105.7 The Fan, Reed said that Troy Smith would be more than equipped to lead the team to a championship if asked.

“I honestly think Troy was the guy and is the guy [at the backup spot]. . . . [Bulger is] “just another guy that’s been in the league and been around,”
Reed said.

It’s right about now Bulger may be wondering if he picked the wrong team.  And Ravens management may be thinking they are better off getting rid of Smith soon.

When Reed wasn’t sticking up for Smith, the All Pro updated his recovery from hip surgery.  He estimates he’s only “35%” and acknowledged there’s a decent chance he’ll go on the reserve/PUP list to start the season, which would force him to miss the first six games of the season.

Not only is Troy Smith better equipped than Bulger, he’s better equipped than Flacco. But since Flacco was a 1st round pick, the Ravens could never replace him with Troy

If Bulger was not white, would Reed have said that?

  4. jibfest says: Jul 20, 2010 7:57 PM

Nah don’t think so. Bulger is a good QB when he can stay healthy. It is hard to stay healthy when your O-line is horrible. The Rams threw Bulger under the bus before drafting Bradford. Troy Smith isn’t equipped to be anything other than an NFL backup.

Larry David, you’re an idiot. But carry on.
Not only is Bulger better than Smith, but Reed needs to STFU
How in the world does he want a contract extension when he’s making 5-6mil a year, has a bad nerve, and just had a hip reconstruction.
And to ingratiate himself? He questions the Bulger signing and sticks up for Troy Smith, a no talent ass-clown who doesn’t have the talent OR work ethic to make it on the NFL level. Smart move, Ed.

If you want to talk about overrated…leave out the jets…bc the ravens are faaaarrrr more overrated. It makes me sick hearing bout these guys. Can sumone explain to me how thier offense is going to be this unstoppable force of god. So they got Boldin? oook. annnd. mind u he was good wen warner was throwing him the ball and he had like 15 other recievers to take the pressure of him. And stallworth?? how many people does this guy have to kill b4 we all see he is washed up. WHo cares how fast he is….alot of guys are fast in the NFL. doesnt mean they good. Tom Brady made him look good. And Mason is like what? goin on 63? lol. What a joke. As for the defense….they can stop the run. Cool. Just throw the ball on them. They aint that scary. they won the superbowl like 20 years ago. they are not the same. Steelers will win that division bc if anyone knows anything about football….u will know they play best with thier backs up against the wall. And thats when they win SUPERBOWLS. And thats what counts.

Bulger has nothing in the tank and Smith has been looked over ever since he came out of the closet.

  8. downwithdansnyder says: Jul 20, 2010 8:07 PM

I hate to think there is something racist here. Bulger is “just another guy”? He struggled with a REALLY bad team, but he’s done more in his sleep than Troy Smith in the NFL.

  9. Rick says: Jul 20, 2010 8:09 PM

Troy Smith is 5 foot nothing and will never be anything more than a 2nd or 3rd string QB. He will be out of the league in a year or two. If he was so good he wouldn’t be backing up Flacco or some other team would have tried to trade for him.

    @LarryDavid
While I can’t go as far to say Troy Smith is better eqipped than Flacco… I also can’t say Flacco is better equipped than Troy. I think it was a mistake for Harbaugh to set starters last year before camp. An open competition would be just fine for this team.
Flacco still hasn’t shown the mental aspect of the game… reading defenses and seeing the open man soon enough. And if he does see him, not hesitating to throw. When he waits, the defense recovers and then everyone starts calling the Ravens receivers the whole reason they don’t win.
Either way, the Ravens made a big mistake refusing to let Troy Smith go… and then brining in ANOTHER qb at the same time. Either keep Troy… and know you have a back-up that’s been in the offense just as long as Flacco. OR… release him and sign Bulger. You don’t keep Troy, AND sign Bulger. Makes about as much sense as them not addressing the corner position in the last two drafts(Lardarius Webb was just plain luck)

  14. downwithdansnyder says: Jul 20, 2010 8:11 PM

Just another guy? Better equiped? Smith has thrown for 558 yards…in his CAREER with 3tds and one pick. Bulger has thrown for 22,800+ yards with 122 tds and 93 picks. Not Canton numbers, but to imply Smith is better qualified or equiped might not be fair. Especially since some of Bulgers numbers were dumbed down playing for the mess of a team called the Rams.

  15. numberfour says: Jul 20, 2010 8:16 PM

Reed just likes to run his mouth. He’s not getting another contract and Troy Smith hasn’t gotten a sniff from 31 other teams when he was on the free agent market. He’s too short and throws an inaccurate ball…end of story. Now on to the Stoolers.
Hines Ward is 100 years old & a shell of himself…Santonio Holmes was their best receiver and he’s gone….their offensive line is swiss cheese…they have lost their running game and Troy Palo Alto will never be the same after his knee injury.
Oh…and Rapistburger is a train wreck. Stoolers will fight it out with the Brownstains for last place.

  21. 4evrnyt says: Jul 20, 2010 8:30 PM

Reed although a great player is showing that he doesn’t have much above the neck when it comes to off the field stuff.
He clearly has no clue that these types of comments are only going to get Troy Smith traded even faster then he probably was anyway. No way an organization pays big money to a QB and then turns around and drops him for a back up that wasn’t good enough to crack the starting lineup over a 1st year rookie.

Yeah, he’s just led them to the playoffs his first two years in the leauge and was the first rookie QB to win two playoff games. a)in the flats OR
    b) running the wrong way down the field
because he’s friggin 2 feet tall?? hard to see your receivers when you need a phone book to stand on to take the snap from under center!!

  26. Danwhitmer says: Jul 20, 2010 8:42 PM

@LarryDavid : You must not think much of Flacco then. Troy Smith has had some starts and has not impressed anyone. If he is the next great QB then how come no one has come knocking for him ? The Browns had a chance and knew he wanted to go there….. nope they traded for Wallace and drafted a QB. Yup he must be one of the most underated QB’s in football….. I mean hey he has a heisman so that makes him top tier lol

When the Ravens fold in November, it will be remembered that the team doesn’t support their management decisions. Management has shown it isn’t sold on Flacco, and Flacco has shown he isn’t very secure in his ability to keep his starting job. He knows he can beat out Smith, but he is not so sure about Bulger.

    @jm3485
You, along with a lot of other guys, have to be joking. I agree letting Troy go would have been smart, but what if Bulger refused to sign, and in a locker room division really even probable. Over a second string QB? Come on.
And really, how are they overrated. Flacco posted a 87.2 passer rating, with garbage receivers except for Mason and an unhealthy Heap. There line is underrated if anything, young talent across the board (with the exception of Birk). Boldin caught 81 ball for 1300 yards as a rookie, without Larry, now he is more adjusted to the NFL with a good quarterback, and another receiver to take some pressure off in Mason. Mason has carried this offense for a long time, has been doubled on most downs, and now will be faceing #2 corners.
Stalls accidental murder doesnt make him less of a football player. Also, I agree he might not be the best starting receiver, but in the slot his burner speed and talent will be useful, and if not Clayton may flourish, or at least do mediocre there.
Ray Rice is a top 5 back, and Willis is a great compliment.
The pass defense was ranked 8th last year, and I believe it was 2nd after Week 6, not to mention Foxworth has shown improvement, Fabian and Webb have performed, and we have Walt Harris now as well as Chris Carr and Travis Fisher.
Ed Reed is arguably the best safety ever, and should be back next season. Dawan Laundry as well as Zibby and Nakumura are severly underrated, and we also have Hamlin.
Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, Terrel Suggs, and Jarret Johnson, nuff said.
The fact that we arent even consensous Super Bowl favorites tells me we aren’t overrated, perfectly rated or slightly overrated at the most.

    —————————
I’ve read a lot of crazy posts on PFT, but this is the worst. Troy Smith is a solid backup, but has nowhere near the ability or potential of Flacco. Let me ask you a question, if Troy Smith is as goos as you believe he is, then why didn’t a single team claim him for the 5th round tender the Ravens were asking?

  41. Dixon29 says: Jul 20, 2010 9:19 PM

Bulger was on the worst team in the NFL for the last 3 years. If he played anywhere else (even Detroit, Oakland, or Cleveland) he would have been an above average QB that he had been prior to that.
Ed Reed is the latest washed up mouthy Raven. They are good at producing them.

They ran all over the Pats that game, he didnt need to throw it, so the team didnt.
They won by domination by the ground game (TD on the first play) and by the defense.
    @jm4385
The Jets are overrated because Sanchez is garbage, Shonne Greene hasn’t proved anything, LT is a has been (and the foolish FO ways with Thomas Jones for him), you lost Faneca, and you guys added a whole buch of big name FA’s that won’t produce to well.
Joey Porter simply lost it, LT isnt good, and Santonio was a product of the Steelers system (By having a perfect compliment QB in Big Ben and a compliment WR in Ward). he will be good but not great.
Not to mention losing Kerry Rhodes is a HUGE impact, and they were handed a playoff berth which they wouldnt have gotten if the Colts and Bengals didnt give them the game.

Troy Smith was the starter ahead of Flacco going into Flacco’s rookie season, but Smith got ill and missed the end of camp so the Ravens went with the rookie and it turned out to be a good move. They should have let Smith work a trade he wanted to but they wanted more then other teams were willing to give, it happens in this league. I stand by my the second half though – finishing Ed Reed’s quote changes what he was saying about Bulger.

Still Troy Smith sucks at NFL QB and if he was smart he would have been the first guy to say I want to get on the field at whatever position last year. But now he crawled to cleveland and was pissed on because nobody believes he’s an nfl qb.

For all you morons who did not here the interview here is what Ed Reed had to say this is written verbatum, keep believing the media they pulling you all chain……lol….As Marc pointed out, Ed Reed never said anything about Troy Smith being better than Marc Bulger. Here’s a transcript I wrote up, after I listened to the audio online at 105.7FM’s website (LINK):
INTERVIEWER (at 05:53): “What do you think about the moves they’ve made?”
REED (at 05:57): “I think, honestly, think at the quarterback position, Troy was the guy, Troy is the guy. Y’know, um, and he’s more qualified to lead a team to a championship. Y’know, I think in adding Marc Bulger, it’s just another guy. Another guy that, y’know, that’s proven in the league, that’s been around.”
REED (at 06:37): “I mean, y’know, just the additions we’ve added, it’s been good.”
Nothing in there about Troy being better than Bulger, and I wouldn’t perceive his comments about Troy as implying he thinks Troy is better than Flacco. You have to listen to the context in which the words are spoken; very casual, nothing malicious, and nothing implying discontent with the team’s offseason acquisitions. Just throwaway comments like what any of us would say in ordinary conversation.

Are you talking about the Troy Smith of OSU that threw for 37 yards in the Fiesta Bowl against the Florida Gators? 37 yards, and led the Buckeyes to only 1 touchdown (Ginn had opening kickoff return).
Sure, OSU was outclassed and way too slow, but jiminy crickets, 37 yards the whole game???
Nah, Troy Smith is no Marc Bulger. Bulger was very good at one time, and is now a decent backup. Troy Smith has no chance.

I predict doom for the Ravens this year. They will not do much, especially without Reed. He changes their defense. Flacco overrated by media.

Racism has been perform on black quarterbacks for years. You sound like republicans/tea partiers. For the record, Bulger is and has always been poor/mediocre (1 good season) and I say the only reason that people are sticking up for him is because he’s white.

This article is bogus so all the so-called ‘turmoil’ is bs.. When teams start to look like true contenders for the Lombardi the media looks for any way to spin any news about the team in a negative light.
I have no doubt the Ravens front office has already squashed this poppycock. They are the best in the business.
Just like the Flacco/Bulger article this one reeks of bs. Step your game up PFT.

I am by no means a racist and do not mean to sound like one but this is no surprise. Every single black person associated with or rooting for the Ravens wants Troy Smith to play. If Flacco has two bad games in a row, the phone lines on 105.7 go crazy with people crying for Smith to start. It is what it is, I guess.

Sanchez and a sophmore slump? The kid threw 12 td’s, 20 ints, 2400 yards and finished with a 63 passer rating in 2009.
It would be pretty pathetic if he cant beat those numbers this year. I understand the Jets are run first, but if thats the offensive scheme…you at least need a game manager at QB, not someone who throws more ints than your #1 defense returns back to you. If he regresses in 2010, expect big drama at that position.

In a quarterback starved league, NO TEAM made an offer on the INCREDIBLE Troy Smith, even at the meager price of a 5th rounder and a Big Mac….

Again, this is a post directed to the mentally challenged…….1) What do you think he is going to say, 2) He is better friends with Troy than Bulger (of course) 3) As great as Reed is, he knows nothing about playing QB and 4) Troy Smith flat out cannot play, he sucks…..period……also 5) Insert ignorant Ray Lewis murderer joke here, in case it hasn’t been done already.

    @ Mike Florio
Maybe you have some type of hear/listening disorder and you can not understand spoken words or maybe you just can not understand English. I see that Greg has change the title of this blog and it might be because he did review the interview and found that maybe he did not hear Ed Reed correctly. That is the sign that he wants what he writes to be true and not false.
