Jets unveil Ring of Honor with six inductees

The New York Jets will celebrate their move to a new stadium with the creation of a Ring of Honor.

The team announced today that the first six names to be receive the honor will be coach Weeb Ewbank, tackle Winston Hill, defensive tackle Joe Klecko, running back Curtis Martin, receiver Don Maynard, and quarterback Joe Namath.

The induction will occur in the first game played at Meadowlands Stadium, an exhibition contest between the Jets and the Giants.

“This organization has always had a deep appreciation for and admiration of
those who have worn this team’s uniform,” Jets owner Woody
Johnson said in a release.  “These six men span generations of Jets football, all embodying the
best of this game and what it means to truly be a Jet.  With this new stadium we
now have a proper way to salute those who have helped make this franchise what
it is today.”

Each year, an internal committee will consider additional names for inclusion on the Ring of Honor.

Maybe they can put a giant douche statue outside to honor Mike Tannenbaum.

  3. texasPHINSfan says: Jul 20, 2010 2:35 PM

They should put a picture of Suzy Kolber next to Namath’s name on the ring…

good tradition to start, Klecko and Curtis Martin were studs.

  12. HOI says: Jul 20, 2010 3:15 PM

I’m A Jets fan…I like the move but Im not overly thrilled. Win a real ring and ditch the ring of honor. With that being said Im glad they’re honoring Curtis Martin, love the Jets or hate them Curtis was a first class pro his entire career.

Do “September Super Bowls” count? The jets have a bunch of those to display.

    Now that is an honor
Nice try buy the redhead stepchildren of the Meadowlands but as always to little way to late.

Waste of an opportunity to sell some tickets (or get people to show up) to their other home pre-season game. Game 1 being the Giant game, and as the first game at the new house, it was already going to be a well attended. If they split up the three events they could have filled more seats for the second game.

    Embarrassing list.

  22. SomeFans says: Jul 20, 2010 4:24 PM

Question: How does this work when you “share” a stadium with your big brother?
Does the ring come down during G-Men games? hmmm…
What about the coach who best examplifies what it means to be a Jet?
    Rich Kotite
    Good one ampats

  23. HandsofSweed says: Jul 20, 2010 4:26 PM

God almighty, Bigbluefan. I don’t even want to know how one goes about winning a “super bowel” ring. Do you have to stick your finger up someone else’s ass or can you just do it yourself?

  27. prophet of the light says: Jul 20, 2010 4:55 PM

  28. Thingamajig says: Jul 20, 2010 4:59 PM

Will the names be put up using Velcro so they can be removed when the Giants use the stadium?

  29. j.e.t.s. suck suck suck says: Jul 20, 2010 5:12 PM

  30. bearsfan says: Jul 20, 2010 5:20 PM

WTF? You have to have Gastineau on there. Idiots.

  31. comment_submission_error says: Jul 20, 2010 5:32 PM

They started the ring of honor with 6? They should have included all 7 greats at once, just to get it over with.

  32. TheSleepness says: Jul 20, 2010 5:37 PM

    cool
Kevin Mawae, Wayne Chrebet, Al Toon?

  33. poiuyt says: Jul 20, 2010 5:50 PM

  35. jcjets says: Jul 20, 2010 6:04 PM

Haha. The names will be taken down when the giants play.
Bigblue? Giants are going no where this year. That team has no heart. Beating the pats was classic but it’s hardly the same team anymore.

  36. ray finkle says: Jul 20, 2010 6:12 PM

not a jets fan, but a dolphins one:
regardless, i think wayne chrebet and vinny testaverde belong in there. maybe not initially, but a few years down the road. those 2, for the few seasons they were together really brought the jets from out of the dungeon that was the 1980s and early 90s for that franchise.

  37. 8man says: Jul 20, 2010 6:47 PM

Anyone ever see Wesley Walker play? That guy could stretch a field and his yards per catch were tops one year.
In the words of Cosell, “The incomprehensible Walkah has done it again!”
Well Jets fans, you’d better hope this year they can produce and it disappointment doesn’t punch you in your collective face.
Lot of hype to live up to.

  40. CJ SPILLER says: Jul 20, 2010 7:46 PM

Joe Namath sucked!!! He is the one QB that should not be in the Hall of Fame. Only fame for him is his prediction that the Jets would beat the Colts, that’s it!!! His stats are the worse of any
QB in the Hall, hands down. It’s a joke that he got in!!! Even in his Super Bowl win, he did nothing!!! His only fame should be dressing up as a girl and being a drunk slob!!

  41. FumbleNuts says: Jul 20, 2010 9:48 PM

Did Rex promise Vernon Gholston a place in the ring?

  42. jcdavey says: Jul 20, 2010 10:52 PM

what the hell, no LT? did he cry when he heard he didn’t make it?

  43. jbass says: Jul 22, 2010 9:45 AM

Wow, Woody Johnson and the Jets show how dumb they really are. Not including Mark Gastineau is totally ridiculous! He was arguably their best defensive player of the last 30 years. Unbelievable, he has to be in there over the highly over rated Klecko. Recently, Klecko has been made a hero by Jets fans. Strictly an illusion, he was average at best. Get Gastineau in there Jets, get a friggin clue!
