Marvin Lewis talks contract extension

M. Lewis1.jpgMarvin Lewis’ impending “lame duck” season continues to be one of the more underreported stories during a time of year media hacks like us make mountains out molehills.

We haven’t heard any updates on the situation since the Scouting Combine, but Lewis confirmed Tuesday that talks are ongoing.

“Mike [Brown] and I at some point hopefully come to an agreement from both
sides of us and we all feel good about,” Lewis said, according to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We have spoken
about the contract a few times since then
but we don’t talk about it
daily. That’s not me to worry about it or bring it up. I don’t go about
it that way.”

Coming off a playoff season, Lewis has plenty of leverage.  It’s possible that he’s hoping to push changes in the organization through as part of a new deal.  If Lewis gets to the regular season without a contract, we wonder if “coaching free agency” will be too tempting to pass up.

“I would love to continue to coach here,” Lewis said.  “I think every year is a new
challenge, a new start and hell we’ve got Ocho.”

That’s a reason to stay?

Why would they do this? He’s 56-55 in his time there and has had only TWO seasons above .500. Yeh he made the playoffs last year but his only other winning season was 4 years before. But I guess he’s earned it by being average at best and filling the team with hoodlums. Nice work…

    yeah, get a GM please!!
The last 2 years they hit on some great picks, but they need to pony up some cash and get a GM already!

Not so sure about Marvin Lewis reaping the rewards of free agency. Who would hire Lewis as a head coach if the Bengals don’t? Seriously?
Although sadly, he would be brought in to interview for EVERY vacancy.

Gregg Rosenthal writing posts about the Bengals. That’s a reason to keep visiting this site?

Win a playoff game first there Marv.

Marvin Lewis is asking to be the GM of the team or for Mike Brown to hire a GM in order for him to stay. one of the two. Guaranteed.

It appears that in Cincinnati mediocrity is considered a winner.

Because he’s a good coach who finally has all Lewis type players around? people seem to forget how horrible the Bengals were in the 90′s and the fact that Marvin Lewis has to coach with a Handicap because he has one of the worst owners in football…

Is there any evidence that “lame duck” status actually means anything? I know that last time the Bengals had a lame duck coach was 1988 with Sam Wyche in the final year of his contract… and the Bengals made the Superbowl.

Apparently all Lewis type players have to be ex-felons or with a long rap sheet of convictions.

    Are you an idiot????
Look at the Bengals previous 11 campaigns before Marvin arrived. they were like 45-131. something like that.
You don’t think he’s done a remarkable job with limited (mike brown) resources.
    get a clue you idiot.

  17. PolegoJim says: Jul 20, 2010 5:46 PM

@ Kazkal –He’s been recruiting ‘Lewis’ type players for 6 years. That’s giving him a free year in 2003 and starting his recruiting in 2004.
Lewis scheme, recruiting, and players are .500.
Face it man, he may be a good assistant coach, not HC material.
Sorry Cinci fans, more same ole same ole. Here’s looking forward to 2012…

  18. nflisking says: Jul 20, 2010 5:50 PM

    @kazkal
What the f*** are you talking about? Lewis is a good coach because he’s handicapped with an idiot owner?
Here’s the real test for a coach: how many playoff wins? 0; character of your team? worst in the league since he’s been there.
Brown is one of, if not the worse, owner in the league so I’m sure he’ll reup Lewis

  19. Kush says: Jul 20, 2010 6:06 PM

What has Lewis done to deserve to not be on the hot seat? He doesnt really draft that well and he has had plenty of time to put a winning team together. Extension??? for what???

  20. Thingamajig says: Jul 20, 2010 6:18 PM

anthmikev: I got a clue for you. A 56-55 record is mediocrity.

  21. rooster75 says: Jul 20, 2010 7:01 PM

The one time I very briefly crossed paths with Marvin Lewis he was very nice and friendly, so I wish him all the success in the world as a head coach. But his record speaks for itself.
Watching Hard Knocks I was not impressed with Mike Brown and his daughter, so maybe Marvin gets a pass. As big an egomaniac as Dan Snyder is here in DC, even he knows he shouldn’t put his team on Hard Knocks. Sometimes it’s better for the peasants not to see that the Emperor has no clothes.

  22. kendog says: Jul 20, 2010 7:06 PM

All of that mediocrity BS will be swept out the door with the same Broom that The Bengals used last year on the squealers and Ratbirds. It’s going to be fun watching all the so called “experts” and their little groupies eating crow when Whodey wins the division for the second year in a row!!

True about his record, but what was the team like before him? Awful. Look at the management he’s had to deal with: outside of Al Davis and your boy Dan Snyder, the Browns are probably the third worst owners to work for. Up until last year’s offseason and with the exception of 2005, Marvin’s hands were tied. When he’s been given free reign, the team has seen results in the draft and free agency. I’d be curious to see what the Bengals would be like with Marvin as a G.M. and a guy like Mike Zimmer as head coach.

Hey Bungles fans, keep using one good season as your Super Bowl cause you’ll never make it to the real dance with Marv and Carson. But hey, you won the division once! Mediocrity = success in Cinci, what a shame..

  25. wildcats623 says: Oct 10, 2010 4:59 PM

Nothing more than a mediocre team with a mediocre coach and and a Mediocre offensive coordinator. A 7 point lead with the ball and no time outs left for the opponent and you’re throwing the ball. Sure “Ochocinco” the loud mouth didn’t catch the ball but why throw it to begin with. Bratkowski is a “dinosaur” and Marvin Lewis is nothing more than a “500 coach” in Cincinnati. Tampa Bay is terrible and all you want to do is play into their hands. You have been ramming the ball down their throats and at worst you don’t make the first down and punt…they have ’0″ time outs left. Another brilliant coaching decision. This crappy team will be lucky to go 6-10 with Lewis at the helm and Carson”Happy Feet” Palmer quarterbacking.
