Vikings linebacker Ben Leber told our own Mike Florio that he thinks NFL players would resist the league urging them to wear more pads on the field. But the NFL plans to tell the players that resistance is futile.
NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson told USA Today that the league will probably go from encouraging players to wear more knee, thigh and hip protection this preseason to requiring players to wear extra pads by the start of the 2011 regular season — if there is a 2011 regular season.
“It’s not mandated for 2010. But we anticipate we’ll need to mandate it going forward,” Anderson said. “We’re not going to relinquish on player safety. Particularly when we know we can prevent lost workdays and help players stay on the field. That’s to their benefit and the club’s benefit.”
Currently NFL rules require only helmets and shoulder pads, but the league says more mandatory padding would make the game safer. The comments from both Anderson and Leber are an interesting reminder of the reality that in the NFL, sometimes the labor force doesn’t want management to push for a safer work environment.

If you are only required to wear Helmets and Shoulder pads lets get rid of the pants. Hell the players would rather wear LAX shorts anyways.
I’m sure some will freak out over this, but IMO it’s very reasonable for the NFL to mandate more padding.
Sure, the players are the ones at risk for actual injury, but the teams are left hung out to dry as well when a player has to sit a game (or more) after a hit that very well may not have caused an injury if the proper padding was worn.
It’s appropriate for them to protect their assets, and mandating more protective gear is one way to do that.
I know the Cowboys could use the extra protection, it’s obvious that tampons alone are not doing the job.
A safer work environment is great. However, if that safety gear decreases your effectiveness, it could also decrease your production and decrease your chances of getting those stat bonuses or even staying on the team.
Its all about the money.
This is such b.s. from a league that is getting better and better at b.s.’ing the public into thinking it actually cares about the players?

really? how many injuries are caused by players not wearing pads? Very few I feel like. What is the big injury concern for football players that is getting more and more attention – head injuries and the lasting impact. Players already wear helmets. Does the league care – well, you tell me. There response is, hey, let’s expose these guys to two more games. So, adding two more chances for players to suffer head injuries is fine with the NFL – but make sure you wear extra knee and thigh pads.
This is just so the NFL can say, hey everyone, ignore how we don’t care about head injuries, because look at us, we love our players, and value them over profit – we told them to make sure to wear their tail pads like this is pop warner.

good one….
i look forward to your comments come this season, enjoy ur team becoming the new basement team of the NFC East

Jiminy Smith and Bob Nelson could each benefit from wearing a heavier Man-pon. That fumble-kick to end their season by Erin really opened the flood gates.
havent they already done this, and then relaxed on the pads? I mean, wasn’t the thigh and knee pads discarded because some positions said it slowed them down? I understand the technology is better than the 80′s, but. Still. they’ll go a few years, things will get good, and they’ll relax on it again.
What, is the NFL turning into pee wee football?!

That complete a$$-whipping in the playoffs still stings doesn’t it?
If the NFL wanted to cut down on injuries, they should get rid of padding completely. It doesn’t seem to be hurting rugby players much more than getting a knee injury and the knees aren’t protected anyway. Shoulder pads and helmets just give the player the illusion of being protected and causes them to launch themselves at another player, often leading with the head.
A player would be a lot more cautious if he knew he had to worry more about getting hurt. We all took hard hits when playing tackle in the street but we learned how to protect ourselves by falling on the other guy.
Stinky Cheese–
Obviously I’m not a Cowboy fan, but didn’t they completely shut down the eagles in back to back weeks to end your mediocre season. Hopefully you guys enjoyed your playoff runs that yielded absolutely nothing. I can’t wait until a hard hitting SS gets a good lick on 160 Pound all mouth DeSean Jackson.
They should just put them all in bubbles and let girls play too.

It won’t matter if a hard hitting SS gets a good lick on DSJ cuz he’ll be wearing more mandated pads. Mouth will keep on flappin…
Who cares what the cowgirls did to the Eagles, I know my Vikings slapped them silly in the playoffs. We’re gonna get another chance this season, can’t wait. Romo better get used to looking up from a prone position.
If the Union wants to get more money for retired players during their continued talk about the beating their bodies already take in a 16 game season. they need to wear more pads. Their are basically arguing against themselves on this one. I think this is another strong armed tactic by the league to make “common ground” negotiating points they can pass off as doing something for the union, which requires something else like HGH testing to be done for them in return .
First they make the guys to lose all that well placed fat they acquired during the off season, then they ask them to strap on the pillow and mattress they slept on. Makes no sense.
I think they should use the metal orbs that they used on American Gladiators. Each player should play in one of those things they used to roll around in.
As a person who actually played organized football. Knee and Thigh pads do not slow you down. I find it to be so silly that skill position players don’t wear leg protection often, considering most are tackled by their legs. A deep thigh bruise that could be blocked by the thigh pad can def keep you out a week or two. IDK i know you look for all the competitive edges you can get, but i value my kneecaps.
I’m pretty sure Brett already wears a pad when he plays
WTF!!! Do they want everyone to look like Rex Ryan?
Why would’nt you want to wear thigh, knee and hip pads? I played high school ball, and I could not imagine playing without them. Why risk injury when the padding can prevent it. Oh yeah, I know why. The players want to look good running around in those tight pants. Give me a break. Grow up people.

Once again, you add nothing whatsoever to the thread. Why do you even waste your time?
You’ve shown in the past that you have a fair amount of football knowledge, but it’s been almost a year since you’ve used it, instead opting for poorly planned gay jokes. Why bother?
Also.. Ted is very obviously gay, but Rodgers isn’t. I have a friend who IS gay, and who went to Cal with him. Apparently he tried. Sorry to disappoint you.
This site isn’t about “knowledge” anymore.
It’s about insults and put downs.
Again, look around.
