Saban’s missing a point in the entire problem. It not Only the agents causing this, it’s the players too.
These alleged innocents not only DEMAND money they are very specific in the amounts they require. They play “the game” sometimes better than the agents.
If it’s one thing they are Not, is innocent!

Mike is like a kid asking 42,000 times “are we there yet?” Reading the same old in every unrelated post gets old, so I told him affectionately to piss off.
Nothing in my post said “waaaa” or “don’t pick on Nick.” I love the SOB because he’s our SOB, but I’m far from delusional and called him an NFL “lil squirt” myself in that very post. And since Florio doesn’t write about Alabama, I’m hardly an example of your “every fan who cries that Florio picks on their favorite.”
I take shots at the Nick Satanatics because Shula screwed the Colts, Tuberville screwed Ole Miss, Urban screwed Utah, and Parcells has screwed everyone. Doesn’t excuse Saban, but all these hysterical people wearing garlic and holding up crosses are too tempting to pass up.
So, baby, I’m pretty sure neither Saban nor I care what Florio thinks of him. Next time you’re stuck for something to say, instead of distorting one of my comments, just try Google.

Unless the school is actively seeking out these agents and telling them to pay their players, they’re not responsible UNLESS they know and they don’t take any action. The guilty parties are the agent AND the players (and please, no greedy agents talk because the player is just as guilty because he could have said no but he didn’t). Giving them money won’t stop the problem because the NCAA can’t compete with these guys when it comes to how much money they can give players that they target.
I don’t have a problem with giving the players extra spending money because of what his presence brings to the NCAA but really, can that piddling amount compare to $75,000-$100,000+ that an agent is giving him?
I proposed on CFT that maybe the agents could be allowed to openly pay whatever players they want after they’ve been in school for two years but they couldn’t influence the kid to transfer schools during that time (and there’s be some kind of penalty for a kid who does transfer). The agents wouldn’t be paying every player on any team and just like now, only the studs would get the big money. Maybe they can even work out a deal like some of the other “amateur” sports do that allow them to get sponsorship deals (But then again, would you really like it if guys started sporting logos like race cars?).

NCAA is a frickin’ joke. The schools make millions off these kids and don’t give a hoot if they go on to a successful pro career or not.
NFL should, indeed, implement a rookie pay scale. Not to help out the NCAA, but to right a wrong in it’s own organization. No player should be paid big bucks before they’ve produced in the NFL. A rookie pay scale would remove the risk of hold outs and limit the danger of draft busts. Rookie contracts need to be limited to two years with RFA after that. If they can prove themselves in the first year the team has time to re-negotiate the contract.
NCAA should step back and say the agents can pay these kids anything they want too. As long as they’re not accepting money from a pro team, they should be allowed to keep their eligibility. The schools are making big ching off these kids and they deserve some sort of pay, just like the kid working in the school’s cafeteria or library.

Or maybe you could just get rid of the hypocrisy of college football, a multi-million dollar industry, refusing to allow the players to earn money from it.
As soon as Nick Saban gives up his million dollar salary for the same pay grade as say the college’s head of the history faculty and they cut their admission and merchandising prices so that they only cover the costs of running the football program; then they can get back on their high horse of amateur ideals.
Whilst they’re at it they could actually make sure the players get an education. Dexter Manley managed to get through the entire education system including four years of college without anyone noticing that he hadn’t learned how to read.

Two sides to every story. He is right though. Don’t blame the school. If an agent is anyway involved with a player his license should be revoked for 3 yrs. This hits them in the pocket and forces them to abide by the rules. PERIOD. IF YOU TOUCH A COLLEGE STUDENT THEN YOUR ARE SUSPENDED…..
Now the other side…..
You go to college to improve your lifestyle. Recruiters from every form of life go on college campuses trying to find the brightest stars before they graduate. The agents job is to secure them employment. If I am a college senior I am already thinking of employment. If a non-sports related agent signed me before graduation. No one says a word. I could see in the near future someone suing the NCAA on this issue.

edgy–I don’t think anyone with a sound mind can deny that proper legal representation is important for players at this level, but I think it’s extremely important to make a distinction between providing that valuable service and being a slimy, scum-sucking whore like the guys who tamper with college players are.

Really, here’s a little dose of reality courtesy of George Blanda:
In the days before players had agents, Blanda had a long and contentious negotiations with Halas and it all came down to a $500 bonus that Blanda wanted but Halas didn’t want to pay Finally, when it became apparent to Halas the Blanda wasn’t going to give in, he tore up the contract and then had another one written up that was for $500 more than what he had offered Blanda. George was happy about getting the money that he signed as quickly as he could. It was only later when he was at home that he read the contract and found hat he didn’t get a $500 bonus but a $500 LOAN and he was paying Halas a hell of an interest rate.
Agents are there to keep the owners honest and protect the players. I have had an agent work for me to protect my rights and get me the best damn deal and ensure that the guy who was wanting to hire me didn’t try to screw me. I’m not a fool because I’m NOT an agent or a lawyer and it’s better to have an EXPERT in the field to do the job than someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. The bad agents are a minority and if you think that they’re all scum then you’re a fool.
Owners have been very successful at portraying agents in a bad light when they’re the ones that have screwed the players a hell of a lot longer than agents have screwed the owners. If owners would have treated players fairly, there would NEVER be a need for a union or agents.

I can’t believe how many people idiotically agree with Saban – another idiot. Alabama players are under Nick’s control, not the NFL’s. But because he’ll be caught one day, he’s already trying to deflect blame. How about teaching the kids under your control what will happen to them if they break the rules and then follow through with it even if it costs you a season?
So tell us, oh sage, how do you plan on “freezing out” the NFL? Why don’t you take the lead on that and see if you can recruit anyone other than 3rd string high school scrubs. There isn’t a player on your roster who wouldn’t drop you like a bad habit if you were able to figure out some way to do that. If they could jump straight to the NFL, your name would never spit out of their mouths. Outside of Alabama, you have no credibility in the football world.

Nick Satan should be ashamed of his NFL legacy, however, I agree that the agents are ruining football at the highest levels. The kids have huge, unchecked egos and want to get paid and be famous and the agents promise them the world. Hopefully, a rookie pay scale with modest money (even for the 1st rounders) will curtail much of what is wrong with football.

If people think that for one second that Nick Satan and Alabama aren’t paying players like the rest of college football, they are stupid and crazy. What he is saying has its merits, but to think that the coaches aren’t playing off the fact that they sell the idea that players can go to the next level is just double talk from the master of double talk. Saban may not have been as bad as Bobby Petrino, but he is still bad enough.

Saban might be right, but really, how are you going to recruit players to your school if you’re sporting a “No NFL” rule? These guys aren’t coming in for the love of the game. They want to get paid. Saban can institute a “no agent” rule-for all the good that would do-but he can’t shun the league. Is he going to knock on a door and tell somebody’s Mom that her son should go to ‘Bama, because they stopped all the foolishness of free cash and cars and hookers? Probably not.

The NFL could just stop requiring players to be three years removed from their high school graduation before they can be drafted. If college teams don’t want to cooperate, the NFL could create a d-league and some players could bypass college ball altogether. I imagine that would hamper college recruiting efforts a bit.

When they set the limit at 3%, geniuses like you said that the day of the agent was dead and they were wrong and every time someone says that the rookie cap will get rid of them shows their ignorance, as well.
Even the standard contract is a living hell of legalese and the player that has himself or his daddy or uncle representing him has a moron for a client. An agent goes into the office and meets face to face with management, while his client just goes to the field and concentrates on his. He listens to all of what they have to say and if management disses his client, HE and not his client hear it and the player doesn’t feel resentful toward management for what they say. It will make it easier on both as far as negotiations but as the Memphis Grizzlies have proven, even having a rookie pay scale in the NBA hasn’t stopped a cheap team from trying to low ball their draft choices and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that in the NFL, even with a so called pay scale.
If you believe that agents will go away, you’re naive.
