SportingNews.com: Five quarterbacks who should be benched now

In yesterday’s edition of PFT Daily, we talked about several quarterbacks who currently are under pressure.

In our latest offering for SportingNews.com, we look at five quarterback who shouldn’t be under any pressure at all.

They shouldn’t be under any pressure at all because they should already be benched.

Its easy to pile on Lienz at this point.
You just put him in the same group as Orton, Garrard, Delhomme ugh. I understand what he did to your sister was wrong but jesus. Get a grip Florio.

  3. b033011 says: Jul 21, 2010 1:38 PM

Typical ridiculous article. You bench someone before training camp even starts? No, you let guys compete for job and let the best performer earn the spot.

  4. ripped says: Jul 21, 2010 1:43 PM

Matt Moore? Really? 4-1 as a starter last year with 8 TD’s and 1 INT in that span… on a run heavy offense. He should totally be benched and Clausen should be thrown into the fire as a rookie. Makes total sense… if you are we-todd-did.
Moore proved himself last year. He’s earned the right to start. Clausen hasn’t done anything… he’s not even 1st rounder money sitting on the bench. So many flaws with your “opinion” that it makes my head hurt.

  5. EG says: Jul 21, 2010 1:43 PM

    benched????
has the season started already? dumb, dumb title

  6. Captain Common Sense says: Jul 21, 2010 1:45 PM

Florio, you are a complete retard. Moore has some good stats and a winning record.

  7. joey-pickles says: Jul 21, 2010 1:45 PM

I’m very surprised to not see Sanchez on the list. I guess he must have been number six…

  8. Cecil says: Jul 21, 2010 1:46 PM

The logic behind “bench Orton” is retarded. Even for this site, which is saying something.

  9. SATAN says: Jul 21, 2010 1:46 PM

Leinart has done nothing to prove that he should be benched Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. I would say he has yet to prove he is Starting or Franchise QB material. However he defintely rates to be in a position to prove that he can be the QB who is ready to show if he does have it.

  10. milehiclown says: Jul 21, 2010 1:47 PM

Orton makes sense. Tebow is already as good.
    Thus, my obligitory:
    Start Tebow, please.

  11. mike_311 says: Jul 21, 2010 1:50 PM

Why isnt Kevin Kolb on the list?

  12. TheRamshackler says: Jul 21, 2010 1:51 PM

Moore and Garrard are efficient Quarterbacks that don’t need to be “benched” until a player proves that they are more worthy.

  13. whosthisguy says: Jul 21, 2010 1:51 PM

Another useless article, linked to a separate page to bump up hits at the sporting news and make Florios takes seem more relevant than they are.

In an unrelated story, here are the 5 QB’s that should be benched for being drama queen bitches…
    5. Tom Brady – Haven’t won a thing since their good ol cheating days.
    4. Jay Cutler – For no other reason, his stupid boy haircut makes him look like a fool.
    3. JaMarcus Russel – Oh, wait a minute, he’s not a QB in the NFL.
    2. Ben Roethlisberger – Actually, his drama is a nightmare for any woman.
    1. Brett Favre – Is there a question?

  16. Citizen Strange says: Jul 21, 2010 1:53 PM

I think Derek Anderson will do well with the Cards.
Whiz is a good at coaching up QBs and you can coach everything but arm strength.
Anderson has NFL level arm strength and Leinart doesn’t. It’s that simple.

  17. patpatriotagain says: Jul 21, 2010 1:55 PM

Florio should be benched from contributing to real websites. the 18 seconds that it took me to browse that article i’ll never have back. Matt Cassell. same for Orton/Tebow. Leinart lost the job to one of the better QBs in the last two years, but was good as a rookie, and Anderson is crap. the other two florio admits have no one better than them on the roster but they should be benched anyway?!? Idiot

  18. ZennyandtheBrets says: Jul 21, 2010 1:55 PM

I disagree with Delhomme and Moore being on the list. Sanchez and oh-I-dunno . . . Stafford?

  19. crowdpleaser says: Jul 21, 2010 1:58 PM

as a lifetime 49ers fan… no Alex Smith?

  20. mattgso says: Jul 21, 2010 2:00 PM

Matt Moore? Are you mental? Plug Clausen in now and you’ll screw up both QB options.

  21. Action Dan says: Jul 21, 2010 2:01 PM

Moore and Delhomme are total head-scratchers.
Moore came in and tore it up when his time came and you want to bench him pre-camp?
No wonder you couldn’t hack being a low-level writer for ESPN.
Delhomme is the perfect type of QB for Mangini’s offense. I expect him to have a productive year.
    Now, back to reading NFP.

  22. BernieMac says: Jul 21, 2010 2:01 PM

You have to be retarded! If you put kyle orton on this list then Cutler should be number 2 right behind delhommie! You need to stop coming up with your own opions and just follow everyone else

  23. DWRinAZ says: Jul 21, 2010 2:09 PM

Your clueless for having Leinart on that list. That doesn’t mean he’ll pan out but he’s never had a chance to start behind a decent o-line or had proper coaching (in the NFL) before whiz.
He plaed well vs Tennessee and if he holds true to that form he’ll be just fine. I’ll go as far as to say he’ll be the best QB in the NFC west this year by a decent margin….

  24. Captain Common Sense says: Jul 21, 2010 2:11 PM

Have you ever taken an article down because after reading the comments on it, you realize just how ignorant you are?

  25. ClayMath52 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:12 PM

I love how the Media thinks high prospect Qbs should start right away. Starting Clausen right out of the gate would have a negative affect on his career. Just because it worked with two guys a couple of years ago doesn’t mean its a formula for constant success.

  26. Broncofanman says: Jul 21, 2010 2:12 PM

Florio, are you retarded? Orton is a quality Qb in the NFL, have you even bothered to read the stats? Your article on this just cements the fact that Sporting News sucks and needs to re-evaluate who they have writing their articles. You column has no factual information in it just your warped opinion. You must have been a horrible attorney.

  27. cclautti says: Jul 21, 2010 2:13 PM

  30. Kyle H says: Jul 21, 2010 2:16 PM

I did not agree with any of those.
In most of the cases the player mentioned is the best available guy.
Why not start Tebow right away? Because with a competent QB the Bronco’s have a chance to make the playoffs.
Starting Tebow… they would be lucky to win 6 games.
Why should the Cards not start Leinart… at what point has he shown that he has peaked?
In the case of Garrard and Delhomme… who else they got?

Beautiful pic of Antonio Smith hitting Garrard. Keep up the anti-Jaguar stories please.

  34. obee38 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:28 PM

Kyle Orton is under the most pressure. If there is any indication of this. Brady Quinn and the drafting of Tim Tebow does not bode well. Further more, he had a really good season, but because the wins did not add up, he is looking over his shoulder. I love Denver, but we should be careful what we wish for. Tim Tebow does not look ready and will not be. Brady Quinn, even though it was with Cleveland, has not shown QB star potential. The end of Orton mat also be the end of Josh McDaiels.

  35. realitypolice says: Jul 21, 2010 2:30 PM

  38. tickintimebomb says: Jul 21, 2010 2:36 PM

Not only is the subject senseless, it was thrown together with hardly any real substantiated evidence as to why each should be benched other than, “hey sportingnews readers, I’m Mike Florio and I think these five qb’s are garbage! Why? because I said so!”

  39. geo1113 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:38 PM

    Because he doesn’t belong there.

  40. plt2006 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:41 PM

Mr. Florio, the logic behind your call for benching Garrard is baffling. “Believing” in a player is only a part of the equation, and your remarks are speculative and are easily countered by the fact that ownership green-lighted Garrard’s franchise record contract not too long ago. You also don’t seem to understand the fairly clear player acquisition model that the GM Gene Smith is using. Seriously, you act as though starting caliber NFL QBs grow on trees. Why didn’t you just go ahead and say what you really wanted to, “They should have drafted Tebow.”? Your piece was an overly speculative and disgraceful journalistic effort.

  41. Shaun Lowrie says: Jul 21, 2010 2:42 PM

Some days I wonder why you haven’t worked out where your niche is Mike.
We all know that you basically don’t really have the experience, tactical awareness, or even the desire to sit and watch game tape. How can you make a decision as fundamental as this when you don’t really know why you’re doing it?
Good example in the Matt Moore case. You’re basically saying that Fox should ditch a young QB with potential who has won games in the NFL for a young QB with potential who was a higher draft pick because it might save his job? What if Moore is better? What if they lose with Clausen (which they may very well do)? Where does that leave Fox? You simply can’t make an evaluation at this stage about Clausen, because he has almost no body of work for you to base that decision on.
    Does that make sense?
You even plumb new almighty depths with the suggestion that Tebow should start because of his draft position. Do you actually understand football at all? Are you aware of the difference between a guy like Tebow and a guy like say, Manning? Tebow very simply may not be capable of doing that, but you don’t understand the logic of keeping a veteran on a low salary like Orton around?
Mike, your niche is in rumours, maybe some of the legal stuff. We read because we want news in a centralised style that doesn’t involve trawling every news site. We don’t actually want your opinions. What you have just posted could have been written by a fifteen year old fan of each team who had just picked up his football knowledge second-hand from his classmates.

  42. 49ersrevenge says: Jul 21, 2010 2:42 PM

Alex Smith belongs on this list. The niners refusal to give up on him frustrates me to no end.

  43. manderson says: Jul 21, 2010 2:46 PM

This article is a prime example why I DON’T read The Sporting News.
Seriously? Matt Leinart? Who knows better about what he’s shown the Cardinals? Some lame ass sports writer or the head coach? The fact the Cardinals didn’t pursue McNabb says volumes about how the coaches feel about Matt.
Leinart became the first rookie in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards in a game when he passed for 405 at Minnesota on 11/26/06. He’s also the first QB in NFL history to throw two TD passes in the first quarter of each of his first two games when he did it in 2006 vs. Kansas City and Chicago.
Wow, he couldn’t beat out a future Hall of Fame QB. Neither did Aaron Rodgers. He only got the job when Favre retired. Last year Alex Smith couldn’t beat out a journeyman QB (who’s since signed as a backup in Detroit) to be the starter. Why isn’t he on the list?
BTW what has Kevin Kolb ever done as a starter? No one is putting him on some stupid list.

  44. pilot08 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:48 PM

I believe you chose Matt Moore because you know Steve Smith will be successful with him under center.
But, if the Panthers do have another player throwing touchdowns this year, it will most likely be Armanti Edwards in a wildcat formation.

  45. Captain Common Sense says: Jul 21, 2010 2:49 PM

An unnamed source thinks Florio is the most hated person associated with the NFL. There are players that some people despise, and owners, coaches etc. but Florio has pissed off the majority of fans for all 32 teams. On top of that, I’m sure there are a few players that aren’t his buddy (Steve Smith for one).

  46. osnap305 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:52 PM

Matt Moore? The hell Florio? The only way John Fox is keeping his job is by winning now and that is with a young successful QB like Matt Moore in the drivers seat.

  47. ICDogg says: Jul 21, 2010 2:54 PM

Orton is obviously thought of as temporary for the Broncos. But they don’t want to throw someone to the wolves who is not yet ready. And even if someone is ready, wouldn’t you prefer if he legitimately wins the job rather than have it just handed to him?

  48. troll_aikman8 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:55 PM

Matt Moore did really well last season and will continue to do so again this year. Clausen would look like a clown out there.

  49. KM91 says: Jul 21, 2010 2:57 PM

David Garrard? Matt Moore? Kyle Orton? This is just asinine.

  50. iTorrey says: Jul 21, 2010 2:58 PM

I wont’ comment on who should be on the list but isn’t, I just want to address Leinart.
He probably won’t be the QB for very long. Whiz is giving him one last chance and his backup did go to a Pro Bowl as a member of the freaking BROWNS. I mean, come on. I think that someone making the pro bowl as a member of the browns within the last decade deserves a shot with a high caliber offense. Anderson has the arm to loft them out there for Fitz to go get. Leinart doesn’t.

  51. BleedGreen says: Jul 21, 2010 3:06 PM

Kolb isn’t on the list because Florio hates Mike Vick, and if Kolb gets benched, then Vick gets the starting nod.
Now, Kolb shouldn’t be benched anyways, and neither should ANY of the guys that haven’t played more than 1 year as a starter.
Moore wins games, theres no discussion. Orton wins wherever he goes. Theres no discussion. The defense let them down at the end of the year, not Orton.
Why not Carson Palmer? What has that guy done in the past 2+ seasons? Nothing really but be a ginger.

    1.Florio
    2.Rosenthal
    3.Smith
    4. Silva (PLEASE)
    5. What’s his name
Nah, I’m just kidding, i can see Florio in his later years as a professor in communications teaching a class, how to atrract visitors while offering them nothing……

  55. TonyDogs says: Jul 21, 2010 3:15 PM

I’m starting to think Matt Leinart ran over Florio’s dog.
Leinart had a better rookie season than Stafford or Sanchez, and was benched in favor of Warner in Hurry-Up offense situations. Whiz has repeatedly stated that Matt is the guy, but there will be competition at every position. What’s so hard to understand about that?
Is Leinart under a lot of pressure? Yes. Have we seen enough of him to determine if he’ll be a good NFL QB? No.
But remember, his poor win/loss record has a lot more to do with the Cards bad defense then his playing. He had Chicago on the ropes till the wheels went off, starting with poor play from the D. And he did enough to beat TN last year, until the Cards D couldn’t stop a 99 yard drive.
Whiz wants a classic ground-game, grind out wins style of football that he had with the Steelers. Leinart doesn’t have to be Warner. He just has to be competent, and I think he can do that.
Oh yeah, they beat the Steelers in 07 with Leinart starting. Just food for thought…

A good running game and a good coach is just the ticket for Leinart to have success

The only reason i see a QB ( on this list or not ) being benced is because he holds his team back. I have not seen that in any of the QB’s here except Delhome and since he has always been a good QB so he deserves to get a chance to start the season. If he continues to screw up then he should be a bench warmer!

  66. brasho says: Jul 21, 2010 4:30 PM

At least the article was better written than the caveman-esque “we look at five quarterback who shouldn’t be under any pressure at all.”
Unga bunga, we look at five quarterback… unga bunga, me smash!
You know what? I don’t give a rat’s arse about Matt Leinart, but when the guy was beaten out by a hall-of-famer, like any other young QB would usually be (Rodgers, Rivers, Steve Young, etc all spent time on the bench watching future HOFers), you can’t base your argument that he was beaten out. Then you state that you aren’t convinced, blah blah… the guy has barely played! He doesn’t have enough starts for a quality OC or QB coach to decide if he has it or not… but apparently an internet hack does know? Gimme a break… stick to reporting the news, Florio. Editorials are meaningless drivel when they are produced by a hack that doesn’t know the game. Stick to linking, cheerleading, and the law.

  67. nowathand says: Jul 21, 2010 5:00 PM

All who get angry over Florio’s list are playing into his hand. I, too, am guilty of making lists on my blog to boost hits and incite conversation.
That said, two of these picks are tremendous stretches. Four times now, Florio has talked about Delhomme’s play without mentioning he is now more than a year removed from Tommy John surgery. Rosenthal wouldn’t be this sloppy.
The Matt Moore pick is silly, not only because he was the best quarterback in the NFL down the stretch and was able to keep defenses from stacking the line against the top running tandem without turning the ball over. It’s absurd to think that, where Jimmy Clausen was picked, that he could only be considered an eventual starter.

  68. rbais2 says: Jul 21, 2010 5:11 PM

So all rookie QB’s should play???
Even the ones who would suck from the beginning of their first snap (mainly Tim Tebow)???
I saw Kyle Orton in Chicago and the guy proved that he could play there and Denver. Throwing for 21 TD and 12 INT doesn’t mean you suck.
Jeff Garcia was worthy of starting in Oakland in 2009 after throwing 35 TD and 12 INT in his prior 33 games and Chad Pennington was worthy of starting in Miami during 2008 after throwing 27 TD and 25 INT in his prior 25 games, then Orton deserves to start.
Leinart’s MMA training with Jay Glazer was a waste and it likely won’t improve his arm strength as a thrower and the Browns should just change their names to the Cleveland Wildcats could going “wildcat” with Seneca Wallace & Joshua Cribbs is a better option than starting Delhomme.
Delhomme gets a two-team salary raise that is WAY ABOVE 60% after being bought out for $11-12 million to stink up Carolina???
NBA players don’t receive that much more after being bought out from their teams.

  69. Dawgpound2009 says: Jul 21, 2010 5:11 PM

Jake Delhomme should not be starting for the Browns ??? They should not have spent 7 million dollars bring the human interception machine to Cleveland? Brillant deduction, Mr Florio!
That’s right Mikey! Jake Delhomme is going to get your new favorite interview buddy Eric Ratgini fired this season. He’ll just make the wide receivers look worse than they were last year.
I did like the idea of being able to bench sportswriters. That one would have been worth seven million dollars for.

  70. rollli1967 says: Jul 21, 2010 5:26 PM

Florio, You are a knucklehead! Why not save this type of article until after training camps before spouting your biased drivel.
This article is a complete waste of time. With training camps not even started. None of these QB’s has had a chance to be evaluated properly by their respective teams.
For example the guy you had at the top of your list, Jake Delhomme had 1 bad playoff game and 1 bad season, otherwise the guy took the Panthers to the superbowl and I believe at least 3 NFC championship games. Jake obviously is not the long term answer at QB for the Browns due to his age, but he is fully capable of providing veteran leadership to Senaca Wallace and especially the Browns future franchise QB Colt McCoy. Last but not least, Jake will want to try and end his NFL career on a postive note and this will provide additional motivation for him to play hard and well.

As a Panther fan I was going to chime in about M. Moore. Jake needed a change of scenary and will do well in the Browns offense. His Moxie alone will do wonders for the Browns.
What I find about this story is EVERY one agrees that Mike F. needs to do some more research before writing a half hearted story like this.

This is my favorite thread ever. Showing love for Delhomme and Moore. The media is hellbent on the Panthers starting Claussen. And yeah, why isn’t Alex Smith on there? You want my 5?
    1. Matt Hasselback
    2. Ben Rapistburger
    3. Alex Smith
    4. Kevin Kolb
    5. Plug any Bills QB in Here.

WHere is the logic with the Panthers? Moore has some good numbers, and you are operating on the assumption that he is not the long-term answer and Clausen will stay on the bench. They never went after a QB in the free agent market. They brought in people like Tony Pike, a developmental prospect, to observe. Clausen fell and fell some more. The Panthers had a total of 8 games of experience on the QB roster, and Moore is an UFA after the season. Clausen was considered a top 10 pick, so they took him. In the past, they took Beason when they had Morgan, Connor when they had Beason, Oh, and Pike when they had Clausen. Right now, Cantwell might be the Panthers’ best QB.

  78. Kolb to Jackson says: Jul 22, 2010 9:57 AM

I agree with everything Mike Florio said except for David Garrard. I want to break down Florio’s top 5 QB’s who should be bench to all of the Florio haters.
    1) Jake Delhomme- This dude is a scrub
    2) David Garrard- Only one that doesn’t belong here
    3) Kyle Orton- Orton is average at best
    4) Matt Moore- This guy is good but not Clausen good
    5) Matt Leinart- This guy will have Fitz crying for Warner back by week 3
To anyone out there who feels the urge to say “Hey! What about Kevin Kolb?!” or “Hey! Aren’t you forgetting Alex Smith”, save it. Both players are on there way to being full time starters and good QB’s. Kolb gets to operate one of the youngest and most explosive group of receivers in the NFL.

    Hey, Kolb to Jackson:
“To anyone out there who feels the urge to say “Hey! What about Kevin Kolb?!” or “Hey! Aren’t you forgetting Alex Smith”, save it. Both players are on there way to being full time starters and good QB’s. Kolb gets to operate one of the youngest and most explosive group of receivers in the NFL. ”
How does that description not apply to Matt Moore? Moore is 6-2 as a starter with a QB rating that would make him one of the five top QBs in the league. Kolb can’t say that. Smith didn’t do that.
As for Florio, I agree with you to a point. he stirs things up–its July. Everyone gets mad and he gets rich.

This is the same guy that called Kyle Orton one of the best young QBs in the league in an article last season. Your spine is made of jelly.

I think Jake Delhomme might actually improve, especially now that he won’t have Steve Smith telling him that he’s a “dumbass” every time he throws a pick. Those mic’d conversations on the bench were priceless!!!
There’s just no one on the Browns who isn’t a “dumbass,” so Delhomme ought to blend right in.

  82. DASAGENCY says: Jul 23, 2010 9:01 AM

DA should and will be the Cardinals starter before long. Browns should have never let him get away.

  83. numberfour says: Jul 23, 2010 9:58 AM

smith, kolb, garrard, delhomme, orton, moore are all better than the next option as of now and should not be benched. i would argue only garrard and delhomme actually warrant severe monitoring for demotion. and wallace is not an every down qb. orton and kolb are way better than their backups.
leinart sure could be benched. but i perceive anderson needs some ‘rehab’ first.
flacco, manning… who are you people kidding. carr would probly play better in nyg behind a real line than he did anywhere else. but he isnt as good as eli.
bulger could possibly supplant flacco, but that isnt his role. and that always plays a part in these discussions. i am sure bulger would gladly take a ring as a backup then go elsewhere to be a starter fer sure again.
palmer? provide a real dependable wideout or 2 and then lets see. they dont have a quality backup.
rapistberger? love ben or hate ben – leftwich was immobile and telegraphed throws when young. and he is slower now. he doesnt have it. he couldnt supplant joey harrington.
clemens should probly have started in nyj down the stretch last year. they might have legitimately got to the playoffs then.
campbell isnt all some people think he is. he may be a smidgen better than some former oakland qb, but check out his career stats. except for the 6-2 start in 2008, he is 14-35 as a starter. worse than harrington, who obviously played on worse teams.

  84. clintcooper says: Jul 23, 2010 11:40 AM

    Note to Mike:
    1. The Panthers were very successful under Matt Moore. i.e. THEY WON GAMES.
    2. Matt Leinart completed 67% of his passes last season.
But please, Mike Florio, don’t let the facts get in the way of your uninformed musings.

  85. rydendonkeys says: Jul 23, 2010 1:22 PM

Articles like this really take away from any real base of credibility you may have. You don’t just throw in the towel and put the season on training wheels for your QB of the future, whether Clausen or Tebow. The Broncos had a great start last year, Orton is playing in only his 2nd year in the offense, and should do much better. The defense is heavy on veterans, and just because you draft a QB in the first round does not constitute a complete rebuilding of the entire team. That would be extremely stupid, especially in a league with so much parity where worst to first is commonplace.
Are you really that much of a knee jerk fool?

  86. goodmaaa says: Jul 23, 2010 6:25 PM

well i thought about getting the season preview mag until i read this

  87. Mike Daly says: Jul 27, 2010 10:47 AM

Running games don’t develop quarterbacks – only quarterbacks do that. Matt Cassel developed by throwing the ball and learning pocket feel. Matt Leinart never developed either and he needs to learn fast.
Jimmy Clausen was an A-hole before and he doesn’t qualify to start over a guy (Matt Moore) who’s actually won a lot in his starts to this point.
