The Washington Redskins traded for quarterback Donovan McNabb without extending his contract, which expires after the coming season.
To date, no progress has been made regarding an extension. It previously has been reported that McNabb wants to see what Peyton Manning and Tom Brady get before working out a new deal. (Though McNabb won’t get the same amount, those contracts will help set the ceiling.)
Recently, Redskins G.M. Bruce Allen confirmed that serious negotiations have yet to commence. That said, Allen said he anticipates that McNabb will remain with the Redskins over the long haul.
“We really haven’t started [talks],” Allen told Comcast SportsNet, via Dan Steinberg of D.C. Sports Bog. “Donovan is so excited about this new opportunity -- the team has embraced him, our fans clearly have embraced him. We’ll have plenty of time to get something done with him. We see him as part of our future. We would not have made the trade unless we see it that way, and he knows it.
“He’s a mature player who knows that he’s gonna be paid well, but there’ll be a right time. We made a great investment in trading for him and we like the guy, we really like him as a leader on this team, and the players have really accepted him. And we think he’s gonna be a great Redskin for years to come.”
Whether McNabb agrees remains to be seen. After one year with the organization, McNabb could feel the same way that Albert Haynesworth feels after one year with the organization. Unless the Redskins are willing to use the franchise tag to keep a quarterback who doesn’t want to stay, McNabb could still be one and done in D.C.
