Eli Manning donates $1 million to Ole Miss

Giants quarterback Eli Manning and his wife have given $1 million to an academic scholarship program at their alma mater, the University of Mississippi.

“Abby and I were drawn to this program of helping people who might not be able to attend college otherwise,” Manning said in a statement released by the university. “To us, it was a way of truly helping a lot of people.”

The program the Mannings are helping to finance will aid students who were already getting scholarships but struggling to pay for school after Ole Miss raised tuition by 6.5 percent this year.

Manning is one of a number of NFL players who have made significant contributions to their schools over the last year. Others include Lions rookie Ndamukong Suh, who pledged $2.6 million to Nebraska, Packers cornerback Charles Woodson, who gave $2 million to Michigan, and Vikings safety Madieu Williams, who gave $2 million to Maryland.

He should have given it back to all those “fans” that overpay all that money to sit there and watch grown men pay sports…..and then don’t get playoff tickets.

    Lets be honest here…
Ole Miss is just scared to play Boise State in 2011.

I live twenty miles from Oxford(across the lake), and I couldn’t tell you the exact answer to that question. Though, I’ve heard many. I will tell you that Ole Miss is a great University; athletically and especially academically. The grounds are beautiful, and so are the ladies. The University has contributed many greats to our country. Morgan Freeman, William Faulkner, and John Grisham are just a start. It’s a wonderful place. Anyone who hasn’t visited, should go there.

good job eli, you just enabled ole miss to overcharge people to attend thier university. if the government and donors would stop giving scholarships to universities, people couldn’t afford to go. then they would have to lower thier prices.

    your a bunch of aholes
A player does something good and you bash him
    Good for Eli
That is why he is the starting QB of a class team unlike the rapest and dog fighters that plague the NFL

Between Eli Manning and former Saints Running back Deuce McAllister Ole Miss is making bank. Deuce just gave them a mill for a new indoor practice facility about 2 years ago and now a mill from Manning. Who says it doesn’t pay to issue scholarships.

Very nice gesture. That should buy a whole truckload of crayons.

  21. roto245 says: Jul 25, 2010 9:34 PM

There’s a lot of douchebags here.
Just an all around decent guy, Eli Manning. He’s a really hard guy to dislike. That is, unless you’re a douchebag.

  22. funi says: Jul 25, 2010 9:38 PM

Is that enough to pay all the player at Ole Miss?

  23. Cup says: Jul 25, 2010 10:07 PM

Seriously guys, the guy does something nice for his University and you can just bash him. I bet any Browns, Rams, Dolphins, Broncos, Bears fans would give their right arm to have Eli on their team…. Yeah, he is not his brother and that was known when he was drafted! Still a very good QB and obviously very generous too!

  24. baroneski234 says: Jul 25, 2010 10:27 PM

I bet all these people that hate him are Patriots fans, and still hate the fact that he orchestrated an amazing drive to beat those cheating bastards. Get over it. The giants were the better team through all of the playoffs.

ANYONE WHO TAKES CHEAP SHOTS AT PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY DO GOOD THINGS
RATHER THEN TALK ABOUT DOING GOODS THINGS, AND KEEP ON TALKING, IT’S CHEAP, JUST LIKE THE CHEAPS SHOTS ON THIS BLOG!
GO LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND ASK YOURSELF, WOULD I GIVE ANYONE A MILLION DOLLARS? AHHHHHHHHHH, THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT, ALL TALK, NO WALK!

    @ JunkYardDawg1156
In retrospect, it’s a good thing Vick only gave $10K. He lost that $130 million shortly thereafter.
Yeah, what Eli did was nice, but all of these guys should give back to their school. I know these guys generate a lot of money for their schools while they’re there, but honestly, if Eli didn’t play at Ole Miss, would the stands have been any emptier? No, those fans would have gone to watch whoever else was there instead. He should give back.
I’d say this about anyone who “makes it big” wether it be an athlete, musician, actor, businessman, artist, whoever.

The deusche bag is the Patriots QB who made the comment before Superbowl 42..
“We’re only going to score 17 points?”
NO – you only scored 14.
Eli is a candy armed d-bag? He’s the only QB in the NFL that was able to stick it to the cheating dynasty. If it weren’t for him, Pats fans would be running around touting their perfect season*.
Talk all you want about the GMEN defense that year… It still took 17 points to beat them. Eli put up 14 of those.
No wide receivers that you could name before the start of last season – yet production out of Eli that you couldn’t have predicted.. Let me guess – all the WRs were diamonds in the rough, right? ELI IS A TOP QB IN THE NFL..
    SUCK IT!

  28. roto245 says: Jul 26, 2010 9:18 AM

The stands WERE emptier before Eli played. He enriched the Ole Miss program. Look up the story. It’s not that hard to do. He should give back. True. So should a lot of others, but they don’t. Eli does. Kudos to him without a “Yeah, but…”

    Eli
Is a class act and a good QB is he Payton not yet will he be only time will tell.
This guy came into the toughest market in the NFL and with out any flash won it all.
As A life long Giants fan I was happy when they drafted him and thrilled with what he has done on and off the turf.
This kid just comes to work does his job and goes home yeah he looks like opie but who cares.
Other then the Pats, Colts and maybe the saints every other team would give what ever it took to get #10 on there team.

  31. cantgetenough says: Jul 26, 2010 9:40 PM

Good on ya Eli! More players should give back like that.

  32. JunkYardDawg1156 says: Jul 27, 2010 1:35 PM

    @BCGreg
    1) I think you missed my point, a few posts above was someone calling Eli cheap. That was my point; a donation of 1M dollars isn’t a cheap individual.
    2) As for “In retrospect, it’s a good thing Vick only gave $10K. He lost that $130 million shortly thereafter.” — He lost that 130M from ghoulish, self inflicted behavior which was incredibly inexcusably stupid; as he still exhibits in the things he does & says. When he donated that 100K, he was already under investigation & the donation was widely believed by many to be a publicity stunt to show he wasn’t such a horrible guy – which of course, didn’t work. The point is the 100K was not a heartfelt gesture, it was a self promotion BS act & 100K was peanuts for him. How much had he donated when he first got the contract & wasn’t under investigation? ZERO is what.
Eli’s gift was a real heartfelt, genuine token of gratitude to Old Miss, his & his Dads old stomping grounds.
