Report: Brady, Pats deal "within reach"

Despite plenty of signs pointing to possible problems between the New England Patriots and their franchise quarterback, Tom Brady, there are now indications that the two sides could be making some progress.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that “there is ongoing dialogue” between the two sides and that an extension of Brady’s contract is now “within reach.”  Indeed, Schefter now says that the question isn’t if the two sides will find a way to keep Brady around over the long haul, but when the deal will be finalized.

Schefter also commits a little ESPN-on-ESPN crime, reporting that speculation of a potential Brady holdout, recently pushed by colleagues John Clayton and Chris Mortensen, is off the mark.  Schefter also reports that the relationship between Brady and the Pats “is as positive as it has been.”

Though we don’t know whether Brady would hold out, we’ve heard from multiple sources that the relationship is, at a minimum, strained.  It is believed that Brady has changed in recent years, possibly due to the Yoko Ono factor, and there’s a concern that he may want to push for a Peyton Manning-style market-max contract.  Brady never has cashed in to that same extent, due in large part to the fact that his rookie deal reflected the 199th slot in the draft, not the first overall position.

So even if he won’t hold out, we’re not buying the contention that the relationship “is as positive as it has been.”  Unless, of course, it wasn’t as positive in the past as we’d all been led to believe.

Yoko Ono factor? It’s always nice to see people blame his wife for Brady wanting to make the amount of money he’s truly worth. Unlike Peyton, he’s sacrificed plenty of times to lock up teammates and build a better team. Now, he’s rightfully wanting the money he deserves.
As a Pats fan, I’m absolutely elated! See ya in Dallas.

Keep trying to milk this story, Mr Florio. I believe the word you’re reaching for is “schism”. But, as usual, at the end of theday the only people whom actually know what is going on between Brady and the Pats are a cutoff hoodie wearing nutjob, a weird talking billionaire and his son, a handsome hunk with a 12 year old’s haircut, and a supermodel.

  3. Bill.Polian says: Jul 25, 2010 11:19 PM

So much for Brady holding out or not retiring a Patriot like all of the clowns in the media would like people to believe.

Way to stay on top of this.
other outlets reported this a long time ago.

Florio is just mad that he doesn`t have any souces who are actually in the Patriots organization

  7. BCGreg says: Jul 25, 2010 11:45 PM

I’ll believe Schefter over Clayton and Mortensen. Mort is losing a little zip on his fastball. Clayton never had a fastball.

Better to stay there where cheating made you who you are, go somewhere else and look like the fraud you truly are.
    See: Matt Cassel

Still trying, eh Florio. You can’t seem to let it go. Exactly when will you admit you were full of crap the entire time.

Really… you need another source besides John Clayton. You’re both reaching a little too hard to create something out of nothing. Stop trying to milk a bull.

Peyton Manning market max? This isn’t the NBA.

You’d have been better bleating on about cameras or something else. At least you wouldn’t reveal yourself to be a complete idiot that way.
Checking the dictionary for what “fact” means might be a good start. Then learning how to add might be the second thing to work on.
    What a donkey.

The patriots are not what they were 5 years ago, and have a lot of holes. At this time they should be looking towards the future like SF did when they traded Joe. The picks and the money saved could put them back on top in 3 or 4 years. By signing Tom to a long term money waisting contract, most definitely will set them back 6 to 8 years .
Mr. Brady had provided NE with some never forgotten moments, but is only one piece of the pie.
Teams often look back and reallize what went wrong, and in NE they will too if they sign Tom for the future instead of getting the most of what he’s worth right now. It’s called MAX VALUE.
    TRADE HIM FOR PICKS.

This is sad news for the many mediots who have been trying and trying and trying to MANUFACTURE a story about a Brady/Patriots crisis
Not only will Brady sign a new long term deal but he’s going to have a monster year. Sorry mediots!

I don’t know if you were trying to make the point that he took less money or not….but restructuring doesn’t mean a guy takes less money. It simply means that a guy gets more money converted into a bonus of some type paid up front that will prorate his cap hit. Guys who restructure aren’t some heroes who are sacrificing anything. PM at one point had a total contract value of something like 42% of his team’s cap one year. Ye gods. Taking less than a market value contract? Those are the big picture team guys.

  33. Wonka says: Jul 26, 2010 10:30 AM

The Pats* are irrelevant. It’s been 6 years since they were able to cheat their way to tainted SB glory. Holes in that team are wide and growing. Brady is a washed up has-been, who without aide of stolen defensive signals would be just another QB.

  34. Fogs77 says: Jul 26, 2010 10:33 AM

You are an absolute MORON Florio. Brady’s first real contract negotiation came after he had won a Super Bowl. Draft status had nothing to do with it.

  35. Pastabelly says: Jul 26, 2010 10:55 AM

I would have been concerned if Brady hold out talk had come from Curran, Schefter, or Reiss. But whe it came for Clayton, it’s a bit of a joke.

Then how do you explain the MVP post spy gate?
How do you explain the greatest season statistically for a player?
Can you point out all these so-called “holes”?
Then you say they are “irrelevant”, well if they are so irrelevant why did you take time to post a comment?

  37. thehoodedone says: Jul 26, 2010 11:18 AM

Do you really think it’s about money with Brady?? I’m pretty certain that every single ad campaign starring Peyton was offered to Brady first. Have you all failed to notice the fact that he has a pitchman’s mug, yet rarely ever pitches anything but a football? When was the last time you said ” Man, not another Brady commercial”?

Well if “he is only a couple wins better than Matt” means 95 wins better, than I agree.
    Brady= 96 + 14 (post) = 110 wins
    MattC= 11 + 4 = 15 wins
    Now, THIS IS FACT!
    Idiot.
