Scott Shanle doesn’t want the NFL to pay based on potential

We pointed out earlier this afternoon that the recent comments of NFLPA president-in-waiting Domonique Foxworth regarding his opposition to a rookie wage scale suggest that Foxworth is, on this issue, grossly out of touch.

“This is a pay-by-potential league,” Foxworth said. “I think players should get paid on potential.”

Said Saints linebacker Scott Shanle in response, via his Twitter account. (It’s unverified, it’s the Twitter page linked through the official Scott Shanle web site.)

This is stupid,” Shanle said. “Potential! In the real world u get paid for performance. When will NFL figure it out.”

Actually, the NFL has figured it out. The league wants to get rid of the pay-for-potential system, at least as it relates to the players taken at the top of the draft. Whether the new system will adequately reward the draft picks who become instant stars regardless of the round in which they were selected remains to be seen.
