Atari Bigby signs his tender

Packers safety Atari Bigby will arrive to training camp on time to try to defend his starting strong safety job.

A league source has confirmed to PFT that Bigby signed his restricted free agent tender on Tuesday.  Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the news.  Bigby, a rangy but highly inconsistent player, is scheduled to earn $1.759 million.

Rookie Morgan Burnett has impressed in minicamps and could challenge Bigby for playing time this year.  Bigby makes big plays and is an asset in the running game, but too often was the cause of breakdowns in the secondary.

Prediction: Bigby will not be the starter by mid-season.
If Burnett has a good camp then it happens even sooner.

Bigby plays high risk. Paid off his first couple seasons. Now it’s costing him and the defense.

Good for Bigby. Our 3rd round steal will still be getting the starting job come regular season, and I can’t wait to see him work his magic.

I like to imagine Atari as a Rudy or Lucas type character in high school. A little runt with a big heart, who eventually makes his way onto the field.
And I like to imagine the conversation went like this:
Trainer: “Our safety is out for the rest of the game. What do you want to do coach?”
Coach: What else CAN we do?
Then they look at each other and both say “Let’s play Atari.”

Yeah, safetys that slip to the 3rd round usually go on to have huge rookie years. Should be a fun learning curve for Morgan, joining a secondary that couldn’t have stopped Warner’s passes with shotguns last January.

the only 2 problems that i’ve noticed with the packers pass defense is that their front 7 seems to have problems pressuring the qb and their defensive backs have a hard time preventing completions, but other than that their pass d looks good. however, they did lose 2 starters from last year, kampman and jolly so there’s that to think about.

Bubba: Bernard Pollard had a breakout year last year in his first year with the Texans. Granted, he was a second rounder, but I see just as much talent with Morgan. Hell, MOST of the analysts are in agreement that Burnett was a steal. He is a ball hawk, and a big hitter at times. And quit with the Cardinals game. BOTH defenses played like crap. Coaching was the main reason our D did worse.

  22. JimmySmith says: Jul 27, 2010 9:10 PM

Bigby’s injuries have prevented him from reaching his true potential. The kid (Burnett) is going start in 2010, its just a matter of which game.
If Bigby’s play really declines, we will cut him and the Vikings will pick him up, just like our other rejects.

Well, not every defense can make the average opposing QB look like Joe Montana like the Vikings did last season.

  28. ACDC84 says: Jul 27, 2010 10:42 PM

He will be great depth at back-up to either safety position but he’s overrated. He had a HUGE 2007. I’ll never forget the wild-card game where the Seattle receivers did their best Todd Stinkston impressions when they sensed Bigby in the area.
However, he has been bad the last two years. He has been hurt often and he’s a liability in pass-coverage when he’s on the field, and that’s not something our defense can afford, as shown by games against MIN, PIT, and ARZ last year. And half of his INTs have been a result of the ball finding him, as supposed to him making a sensationable play on the ball.
His agent should have his license revoked for allowing Bigby to sit out all this time and give Burnett a chance to prove himself.

The fumble was bad. No doubt about that. But the man put up 400+ yards and 5 TDs. And the defense allowed 51 points. No two ways about it. The defense failed. Anytime you let a team north of 50, you can count on losing.

C’mon; you know exactly what I’m about to say.
Since when does not going to a Pro Bowl mean you didnt have a good or even great year?
London Fletcher and Greg Jennings have never been selected.
Each of those players- Atogwe, Lynch, and Wilson had significant impacts their first year, and those were just first to mind. I’m sure I could double the list with a little Google/ Wiki whack.
It’s just speculation as to whether Burnett’s going to light it up in 2010, so nothing to argue about-
but plenty of safeties picked in the 3rd round have done just fine as rooks.
(and yes, my gut sez Burnett is going to as well)
