Doctors recommended hip surgery for Osi Umenyiora

It’s a good thing the Giants have a lot of depth on the defensive line.

Before training camp even starts comes word that the injury-wracked unit from a year ago already has a major concern. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports Osi Umenyiora has dealt with hip pain all offseason and visited a specialist a month ago.

That specialist -- the same doctor A-Rod and Ed Reed used -- recommended surgery and initially set an appointment. The team, Umenyiora, and the doctor all eventually agreed to “pass on surgery for now” because the injury won’t grow worse by playing on it.

Yeah, so maybe it’s a good idea that Umenyiora comes off the bench this year after all.
