Terrence Cody fails Ravens conditioning test

Though he presumably didn’t run sans shirt, Ravens rookie nose tackle Terrence Cody was held out of the team’s first training camp practice on Tuesday because he failed the conditioning test.

The explanation came from coach John Harbaugh, according to Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.

Cody’s overall physical condition — and size — greased the skids for a fall deep into round two of the 2010 draft.

Of course, he’s not the first nose tackle to run into trouble when it comes to demonstrating that he’s ready to go.  Two years ago, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin keep Casey Hampton out of practice for an extended stretch because of the extent to which subcutaneous fat was stretching his skin.

That said, nose tackles don’t need to be triathletes.  They are big, fat agile men whose job is to clog the line of scrimmage like the main sewer line leading out of their houses.

They still need to lug their fat asses the 50+ yds to get on and off the field before the offense runs a play.

Yeah but the “Experts” still say the Ravens are the AFC North favorite so don’t worry Ravens fans. Don’t worry about those Bengals because last year the “Experts” picked them to finish 3rd or 4th. Uh Oh.

Cody and Kindle were extremely risky picks, but the media gave them a free pass because Ozzie picked them.

Everybody knows that’s not how that went down. The Ravens have always done very well in the draft but by the looks of things right now their first 2 picks in the Draft do not look good at this point.

  23. timpaul31 says: Jul 27, 2010 10:54 AM

    Oh my Lord.
And the haters continue to hate…
Although we here in Baltimore would love to have Sergio Kindle in camp today, it is by no means a make or break necessity. He was slated to back up Terrell Suggs/Jarrett Johnson.
Terrence Cody allegedly showed up out of shape. Really? Does that surprise anyone. Don’t worry though sports fans, we still have Haloti Ngata(Best DT in the NFL. But you already knew that) and Kelly Gregg(one of the most underrated players in the NFL. But you probably already knew that too). TC will be fine.
Keep hiding behind these two rookies/our secondary/Ed Reed’s injury. Because these two situational rookies, our 8th ranked secondary in 2009, and Tom Zbikowski will be fine this year.
But this blind ignorance spewing from your uneducated mouths is beyond entertaining. You still won’t be happy when the Purple and Black arrive at your hometowns stadium…

    ———————————————–
Ya, that’s right. I totally forgot that two cornerbacks (one who will not start) and a safety completely comprise an entire defense. Forget the fact that we signed a very competant back-up in case Reed does miss the first six games. Man, it’s a real shame a defense isn’t made up of 11 men. We would have had a decent chance at winning a few games if that was the case.
On a side note: Two guys that haven’t hit the field yet already being written off by the peanut gallery. I love summer football talk. Suddenly, everyone is an expert mixed with a bit of Ms. Cleo.

  28. Legend says: Jul 27, 2010 11:05 AM

If you’re counting on rookies to make or break your season, with the possible exception of a running back, you’ve misplaced your hopes. The Ravens are good enough to win without their rookies. All good teams are. I think the goal is to be the kind of team where a rookie can come in and get a chance to contribute and learn in support their first year.

If you want the hype, you can have it…The Bengals are the best franchise in sports, Carson Palmer is better than Peyton Manning, if there were any justice in the world the Bengals would already have 3 super bowl rings…instead they haven’t won a playoff game since the Reagan administration

Not a Ravens fan, but I have to laugh at some of the ridiculous “reaches” here by some opposing teams fans. Seriously, is a player that was drafted to occupy space on the line not passing his initial fitness test a big story? Let’s talk about some real stories. How about Big Ben missing “At Least” the first 4 games of the season, unless he can’t stay away from any more college bars. And, can the poster who claimed that Kindle has a “History of things like this” please explain his history of having an accident? I mean, get real people. The fact is that Ozzie Newsome is a great GM, and if he was on the market, any one of you would be begging your team to hire him. I think it would be wise to let the season play out before you claim that the Ravens busted on their first two picks of this draft.

No, not a Ravens fan. Just pointing out some obviously ridiculous statements by homer fans of opposing teams.
Something to think about. You can go to any team and point out negative stories about any of their draft classes. The thing you have to admit, though, is how is two players that were drafted for depth going to spell doom for the Ravens this year? I mean, if I was a Steelers fan, I would worry about the fact that my qb is going to miss at least the first 4 games of the year, and possibly 6. He is one more incident away from missing at least a year. Your receivers are very suspect, at best. The Bengals had a mediocre, at best, draft. The Browns are basically starting from scratch, but are at least heading in the right direction. Looking at things without any bias, the Ravens are the one team in the North without question marks and deserve to be favorites.

And there lies the problem. I’ve heard nothing but controversy coming from the Ravens the last month or so. They did nothing to help there secondary. A serious weekness in a D that houses Big Ben and Palmer. Their draft is one of the main reasons the pundits are labeling them as “Superbowl Favorites”, and look how it is turning out. They don’t deserve to be favorites in the North let alone in the League. And I don’t believe one second that you are not a Ravens fan. Nice try.

For those of you making the statement of “not a big deal”, you are truly football retarded.
It is a big deal because of this:
Get the “He is just a space eater” notion out of your head. If it was that simple, I have some friends that are fat slobs & I could be there agent and make some money off it. A) You need to quickly shoot off the line & into a gap, making the G & C move & sustain a block. Ever seen a NT make a sack? B) To be effective @ eating space, they need to hold the point of attack & then some. They need to be quick & powerful enough for two players to have to block them. If not, a Center handles him, a Guard clobbers that LB trying to shoot the gap, & your defense now looks ignorantly like shit.
This fat pig needs to start working out, if not, he is a waste of the 3mil he got & that will be his max worth, as other teams won’t f*** with big slobs not willing to earn the money they try to rape teams for.

  71. Marcinik07 says: Jul 27, 2010 1:38 PM
