Wes Welker lands on PUP list

W.Welker.jpgRecently, reports have emerged that Patriots receiver Wes Welker would participate in training camp from Day One, and that coach Bill Belichick would apply caution, holding Welker out of some drills.

As it turns out, Belichick will be holding Welker out of all of them.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that Welker will land on the Physically Unable to Perform list to open camp.  Because he’s on the “active” version of the list, Welker can join practice at any time.  If/when he does, however, the team will be required to count him toward the 80-man roster.

Until then, Welker can’t practice with the team, in any way.  Two years ago, the Colts ran afoul of that rule by letting Peyton Manning participate in walk-through drills while still on PUP.  No action was taken.  (So, basically, maybe Welker can practice with the team before exiting the PUP list.)

A player can remain on the PUP list through camp and into the regular season.  If on PUP to start the regular season, the player is not eligible to join the active roster through Week 6.

Welker suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the 2009 regular-season finale, against the Texans.  Expectations that he would be ready for the start of camp were fueled by his unexpected participation in at least one day of offseason practices.

If Welker is on Active/PUP, he already counts towards the 80 man roster. You don’t get a roster exemption for PUP until the start of the regular season.
The reason he was put on PUP for training camp was so that the Pats would have the option of putting him on PUP for the season later (you can’t be put on PUP for the season if you were previously cleared to practice during training camp).

GOOD. Belicheck is using his head. They need Welker for the regular season. With 3 seasons with 100+ catches, he obviously knows the system. Better to be safe and get him to 110% ready so he can run all over the Bengals in September.

Welker will never be the same. Moss is one more year older/overrated. Eldelman can’t save them.

I wish you the best Wes. You take your time getting healthy and make sure that leg is 100%. Don’t rush back for a second. At least stay on the PUP list until week 3 cause that’d be swell.

He’s still a solid #2 receiver in PPR leagues (even with the injury concern) based on his toughness alone.

He knows the system. He spent most of the off season working with Brady in CA, He doesn’t need to be there in camp from day one. Safe is better than sorry. Since missing the fist half of the season was everyone’s expectation, anything before that is a bonus.
At this point I would be a big surprised if he isn’t activated before the first game.

Typical DUMB Jets fan. He’s on the ACTIVE PUP list genius! That means he could be a full participant next week. They are still planning on him being ready to go Week 1 of the regular season. See you week 2!

Well at least I know you’re young enough where you haven’t had to endure a long life of frustration as a Jets fan. Jerry Rice came back from an ACL in 3 and a half months in 1997. The only reason it wasn’t a complete success is his kneecap was weakened from the surgery… but that’s never the case even just 6 months removed. Its the flexibility thats usually the issue at this point unless you’re a freak like Jerry Rice.

Ahhhhhhhhhh the fruits of the New York school system on display again.
Also, Welker’s ACL injury was much different than one where a player’s leg is trapped under a body or one where a player is hit…there was no extra force on it. It’s still a tear, but with far less damage than one of those varieties. Welker’s game is deeks and fakes and speed….so yeah…there will undoubtedly be some after effects…..but to say he will never be the same is kinda silly…..look around at all the Tommy John surgeries and ACL/MCL surgeries every year and how many come back at full speed or strength. But hey..this is a Patriot…so let’s predict Doom and Gloom every year (what are we up to 6 in a row now) and maybe one of these years…you will actually be right and then you can shout from your rooftop “I predicted the Patriots’ demise” and feel important. Maybe they will even give you a trophy for being 1 for 27 in predictions….dolt

Of course he’s on the PUP. He knows the system, so in essence it free’s a roster spot. Should he suffer a setback then he can come back after week 6. Had he not have been place on the list before camp then he couldn’t be placed on it at the start of the season. It’s a simple manipulation of the rules. Happens every year at this time.

Welker’s miraculous recovery speaks volumes for ( probable) HgH benefits. It’s odd that the Feds will not allow HgH use even for recovery from injury. There are only a couple of legal uses for HgH: to treat growth hormone deficiency in children/teens, and as a therapeutic drug to diminish the wasting effects of diseases like AIDS. Anti-aging and injury recovery applications are not legal.

  23. BCGreg says: Jul 27, 2010 1:07 PM

So, the Colts cheated. The league did nothing. And no one cares.
    Hmmm

  24. geek says: Jul 27, 2010 1:12 PM

Come on Florio, there is a big difference between when Manning did run throughs with the team while on PUP last year and if Welker did it this year: The Patriots are a bunch of cheaters led by BELICHEAT (so says Ramrod, the scholar), and the Colts are a deserving and righteous team that deserve every chance they can to win and show the world how wonderful the NFL can when you pay half your roster limit to three guys. Come on and wise up – the Patriots would get busted if they used a pay phone to call the agent of a potential free agent 5 seconds before the beginning of free agency, even if he also represented Tom Brady. Nevermind that the agent already received a call from every other team in the league that doesn’t have rights to the player, the Patriots are cheaters. Don’t forget that!
