SportingNews.com: Seven worst free-agent signings of 2010

Now that the last of the big-name free agents has a new home, we thought it made sense to target the worst free-agency decisions of the year.

Given that we owed SportingNews.com a column, we saw an opportunity to kill two stones with one bird.  Or something.

And, no, T.O. isn’t on the list.  But one of his new teammates is.

so, Westbrook signed then? Hadn’t seen it. I assume so, since you said the “last of the big names” had signed.

Delhomme is really the only “WORST” on this list. Others like Manumaleuma… who cares?
Delhomme is the only guy who could really have a negative impact on his team. Maybe Bryant but he is still going to contribute, or get cut… meaning the signing was only bad monetarily. The rest are fliers or there to provide veteran presence.

The weekly Mike Florio, “How to make enemies and infuriate people.”, self help offering.

I would consider adding AJ Feely. The Rams jumped on him the first day of Free Agency. They overpay him to be a tutor for Bradford.

“football’s version of LeBron, Dwyane, and Bosh”
    ——————————————————–
WTF. LeBron and Wade are two of the three best players in their sport, Bosh top 15-20. T.O., Johnson and Bryant aren’t even in the top 10 at their positions, much less sports.

I’ve read a couple versions of this list but Florio’s was by far the best — BRUTAL!!!
It’s like the little people who think these things up should just sell their ideas to Mike so he gets all the credit…

“The Vikings lost, and in so doing they possibly won.”
Reminds me of something I read after this last seasons’ playoffs on SI.com (I think it was Don Banks, but I’m not sure), where the writer said that the Patriots actually WON by losing to Baltimore, because then they weren’t under the Final 8 plan that restricted their free agent signings.
Or, most of my family roots for the Browns, and they always say that they’re glad the Browns are losing, because then they’ll have a higher draft pick the next year. Sigh
Call me crazy, but I dont think you can win by losing.

    Mike,
How much crow will you eat when Jake Delhomme actually turns out to be an upgrade for the Browns at QB?

I kind of agree with all the choices, except the Malumaleuna choice. I think that’s a great pick up. Yes he’s 30, but his only role will be to block, which is all tight ends do in a Mike Martz system. They knew they didn’t have that in Greg Olsen so grab the best blocking tight end in free agency before he gets taken by anyone else.
I think you’re underestimating the importance of a true blocking tight end since we’re in this heavy passing league now.

You lot come up with the weirdest numbers for your “lists”. Do you just roll the dice to decide, or what?

  14. Redtrek03 says: Jul 28, 2010 2:13 PM

Ladanian Tomlinson was brought in as a third down back. There was never any question from anyone about this (including Florio who wrote about it oddly enough). Thomas Jones was due a $3 million roster bonus. Greene is Jones’ replacement, not LT. The Jets let Jones go, saved $3 million bucks, and got a serviceable 3rd down back who can catch in return. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEEDED as they transition from a 60-40 run/pass to a 50-50 run/pass.
Therefore, this article (as usual) is wrong.

How can you say Bryant is a bad signing? He is set to practice today and will be presumably there throughout TC and Preseason and into the season. No reason to think otherwise. Sure they signed TO but perhaps that was because we could get him for a steal, not because Bryant isnt who we thought he was. Time will tell with Bryant, Im just happy the Bengals have options.

  16. BenRapistberger says: Jul 28, 2010 2:28 PM

Let’s not forget that the Redskins also brought in Mike’s RB of the future from Denver, Ryan Torrain. A couple years back, Shanahan said he had the potential to be the best back he’s ever coached, and that’s saying something. The only question that remains is if the injuries he suffered will linger permanently.

  17. va4favre says: Jul 28, 2010 2:47 PM

Florio, Too bad that you said that you never read the comments, since I would love to hear what you would say now about telling Favre to retire last May? It does make me wonder how accurate you are this year, but I do agree with your comments on LT. The Vikes were lucky that he signed with the Jets. I was initially excited about the prospect of Favre getting more help, but I think Toby will be a pleasant surprise. Anything that hurts the Jets is fine with me.
ps. Did you eat humble pie with Brett, but that assumes he would ever talk to you.

  18. WhodeyTN says: Jul 28, 2010 3:12 PM

Wow that is a really stupid list.
A little early isn’t it? Maybe they’ll change it once Bryant shuts everybody up with his performance on the field.

so florio “pays back” Sporting News by posting an article that he wrote…

Marlin Jackson to the Eagles – after suffering 2 ACL’s in the last couple seasons – promptly has another season-ending injury in OTA’s.

Malumaleuna is 30. That is not old.
$15 million for 5 years is a good deal if he stays healthy. Guys who can really block somebody are valuable. What’s the problem Florio?

  23. azlionsfan says: Jul 28, 2010 3:53 PM

Just glad to not see the Lions on this list for once
Jake Delhomme is clearly the leader in this category. Its hard to believe that taking any action to try to improve their qb situation would actually make it worse is amazing.

  24. PAYDAMAN says: Jul 28, 2010 4:09 PM

Man, you hate Delhomme Florio. The Browns weren’t willing to give up a high round draft pick for McNabb when they have so many other holes on the roster. Seriously do your homework, and while you’re at it watch some game film of Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson from last season. You’ll realize that while Delhomme is at the end of his career, he’s much better than those two turds.

  25. OLDCRACKER says: Jul 28, 2010 4:21 PM

I don’t know why we have all the Delhomme haters here. If he’s not on your team, what do you care? If your team is an opponent of the Browns, then you should be happy we have him.
We, in Cleveland see him as a solid, blue collar QB to build a team around. He isn’t Peyton, we understand that. But, he is definitely an upgrade over the past.
And, I am not speaking ill of either Anderson or Quinn. It was more of the “confusion” of the position. I hope each does well with their respective teams.
I do think Delhomme is being overpaid but, as so many of you are fond of saying, “it’s Cleveland.” We’ll see at the end of the season.

  26. Shamrock says: Jul 28, 2010 4:28 PM

Manumaleuna was not very good at blocking the last two seasons. 3-4 years ago, he was one of the top NFL blocking TE’s, but he’s just nowhere near what he used to be.
Tomlinson is done. D.O.N.E. The Jets got snookered by Tom Condon. AJ Smith also stole candy from a baby by dumping an “allergic to conduct” candyass named ScareCro on NY.

  27. mwcarolina says: Jul 28, 2010 5:26 PM

(“Ladanian Tomlinson was brought in as a third down back”)
Well, i think he’s here to give a breather to Greene, BUT he’s not as good as some think. I think Joe McKnight will surprise though.

  28. LAEaglefan says: Aug 1, 2010 12:44 PM

I wonder how much the Eagles have to pay Marlin Jackson for not even making it to training camp. The Eagles have a history of signing players coming off a serious injury and it always backfires on them. I can’t remember even one that has worked out for them. When will they ever learn?
