David Tyree retires as a Giant

At the age of 30, David Tyree is done playing football.

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants re-signed Tyree Thursday so he can retire as a member of the team.

Tyree will always be remembered primarily for his performance in Super Bowl XLII. Although he had caught only four passes in the regular season, Tyree caught a ball against his helmet on a play that Steve Sabol of NFL Films called “the greatest play the Super Bowl has ever produced,” and he also caught a fourth-quarter touchdown pass in the game.

After that Super Bowl, Tyree never managed to get on the field at all in the 2008 regular season, and he played only sparingly for the Ravens in 2009. But as he retires from football in 2010, he’s walking away as a Giant.

He also made the Pro Bowl as a Special Team player as well. Tyree had a career better than a hell of a lot of guys that have played professional football in this country and he will never be forgotten by NY Giants fans. Great guy, lot of class, and I’m very happy that he retired as a Giant. I hope he sticks around the organization and continues to influence the younger guys that come along.

Make no mistake, Tyree reserved for himself a place in football annals with that catch. That he helped ruin the Patriots’ run at history just adds to it.

Not a bad career for a former 6th round pick. He will always be remembered for that catch and was a beast on special teams.

I’m surprised he couldn’t catch on (no pun intended) with another team. I know he was with the Ravens for a while, but other than that, you’d think the other 30 teams in the NFL would at least have a need for him on special teams. 30 seems way too young to retire, especially with his name recognition.

goes to show you it was the flukiest play in the history of sports. How many catches did he have after that?

…and he was so tiny as a baby.

Most Giants fans would remember Tyree fondly even if he never made that catch. He was a special teams ace and classy guy. But that catch alone made him a legend.
    Best of luck David!

    A legend?
    C’mon!
Yeah, he was a good player. So good the Giants cut his ass 6 months after making the luckiest catch in NFL history.
Guess they found someone better for their special teams.

Good luck David. You left your mark.

Like it or not that man is responsible for a 10 table tiffany & co ring on all the giants fingers. As great as the defense played that game, if it wasnt for that catch everything would of went to waist. and people forget he also caught the only TD for the giants that game. Tyree We love you, great way to exit the game. Retire with a class act organization. Too bad he wont be receiving a ring for the super bowl the giants will win this year

I’ll always remember him as the wide receiver that muffed the onsides kick.

And dumbasses forget that Burress caught a TD right
    after the play.

As much as I hate to say it, Santonio Holmes had a much better catch in Tampa. Tyree’s catch was lucky and Plaxico caught the TD pass that won the Super Bowl Credit Manning with the escape, not Tyree with a catch made of luck and good fortune…

  15. David56 says: Jul 30, 2010 2:59 AM

If I made only one catch in my entire football career and it was the one Tyree made in Super Bowl XLII I could leave the game a happy man.
A class guy guy, too. Never in trouble or causing any kind of grief to his team(Albert Haynesworth are ya listening?)
    All the best to him.
    GO GIANTS!!!

Guy was a beast on special teams, he was always in position down a ball inside the 2.

I will always remember him for the great catch. He mad his mark. Hail!

Thanks Pats fans. Your petty bitterness makes it that much sweeter.

    Dolfans loved him too!

    @maynevent.
    Didn’t Plaxico catch a TD?

  21. Larry Hoover says: Jul 30, 2010 9:12 AM

The phrase “One Hit Wonder” comes to mind. Yes, he did beat the Undefeated Patriots and for that I am eternally grateful. But a “legend” and “you’ll be missed” is a strrrrrrrrrrrretchhhhh.

  22. EnWhyCee73 says: Jul 30, 2010 10:41 AM

LOL@Hoover. Legend is a stretch but that play, that catch, in that moment? Life imitating art. Hollywood couldn’t have done it better.

Well, that’s not entirely true. After Tyree’s rookie season he was pulled over and cops found a half pound of weed in his car. He went to jail, but then got himself straightened out.
    Larry Hoover,
I wouldn’t expect you to know the accomplishments of a backup WR/ST guy on a team not your own. But your “one hit wonder” theory is stupid.

    Good. Class act.
Tyree was never a great reciever but he came up big when it mattered.
One thing a lot of people forget about him is that he was a really good special teamer and he did make the Pro Bowl a few years back.
