A number of other media outlets have “confirmed” it, but Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald had the news first: the Dolphins agreed to terms Thursday with second-round pick Koa Misi. With Misi’s deal done, the Fins’ entire rookie class is under contract.
Misi was a 4-3 defensive end at Utah. He’ll convert to outside linebacker in Miami, where the team employs a 3-4 scheme. Misi is expected to start at strong-side, outside linebacker opposite the winner of a competition between Charlie Anderson and Cameron Wake. (For what it’s worth, we expect it’ll be Wake.)
In April, we admittedly weren’t as high on Misi as the Dolphins proved to be. Our outside rusher rankings had Misi 14th, and projected to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 105 overall pick. Tony Sparano’s team took him 40th overall.
Our biggest bone to pick with Misi was his lack of elite production — just five sacks as a senior. But he’s got plenty of athleticism and suddenness for an edge rusher. It’ll be up to new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to turn Misi’s natural skills into something substantial.
I think we can view this as the Steelers mailing it in for this season.
EXCELLENT!!! Now there’s an AFC East title to take!!! 2010 AFC East champions, Miami Dolphins!!!
“In April, we admittedly weren’t as high on Misi as the Dolphins proved to be. ”
Evan Silva has to stop passing himself off as PFT staff. He has his own website that he tries to plug here whenever he has a chance. Mel Kiper he is not…
“Suddenness?”
Silva wrote that post with a lot of “suddenness.”
huge
once they season those young boys up theyll have the best d-fence Karlos dansby and yeremiah bell have to step up and be leaders for all the green horns on the defence
Fish Bowl XLV!
I am sure that Silva knows more about this player then the Dolphins staff. Don’t forget that Dolphins sleep with one eye open, just so they can catch a sleeper. Bill
I think the fins might have reached a bit here too. Enamoured more by his passion and non-stop motor than pure talent. Kiper had him going at 79, not that he’s always right.
I noticed this on PFW Whispers last month though,
“We haven’t seen him compete in full pads yet, but Dolphins observers said second-round pick Koa Misi isn’t blowing anyone away in OTAs and minicamp. Misi, who is transitioning from playing defensive end in college to outside linebacker, is penciled in as Miami’s starter on the strong side. Evaluators say Misi needs to work on developing his pass-rush moves before he can become an effective rusher off the edge.”
I think expecting anyone to perform at a high level on a position switch coming out of college is difficult.
Many rookies have a hard enough time transitioning to the pro game – and we’re expecting this guy to make that transition *while* changing positions?
DE to OLB is a pretty big switch. This guy has a big uphill battle. Best of luck to him.
