Malcolm Kelly injured during "Hell Week"

It was billed as a positive when the Redskins’ wide receivers all agreed to show for new quarterback Donovan McNabb’s pre-training camp “Hell Week” in Arizona.  The Redskins, though, emerged from the “intense series of workouts in the desert heat” with a negative.

Malcolm Kelly got hurt.
People familiar with the situation tell the Washington Post‘s Jason Reid that Kelly experienced tightness in his hamstring, an injury that may keep the former second-round pick from participating in the start of training camp.  The Redskins will “proceed cautiously” with Kelly, who’s missed 11 games combined in his first two seasons.
Though he’s been a major disappointment along with fellow 2008 first-day pick Devin Thomas, Kelly’s roster spot is not believed to be in jeopardy.  The Redskins paid Kelly a $391,000 bonus on April 1, and his base salary is scheduled to be just $470,000.
Any missed time would give Thomas a leg up in the competition to start opposite Santana Moss, however.  Veteran Joey Galloway is also in the mix.

    this is going to be a terrible offense…

    Hahaha, how can they fail with this skilled set of receivers?? Redskins=cellar of the NFC East.
    Not even Joe Montana can make this passing attack seem decent, much less McNabb. Have fun getting embarrassed in Week One in front of the entire nation.

    How is this offense going to be terrible? RB’s are Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis and Willie Parker. Donovan McNabb is the QB and has been making mediocre WR’s look good his entire career. Oh yeah an there is that other little factor of having one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL as their coach. Donovan and Coach Shanahan both have huge chips on their shoulders. I am not a redskins fan by any means, they are not even in my top 10 teams but I am realistic to know that all NFC East teams better not overlook them.

    They probably won’t be as bad as last year which is too bad. That MNF fake field goal debacle was pretty awesome.

    Why is this guys roster spot safe again? You know he sucks right?

    My guess is that after the first set of hills in 100+ degree heat Kelly pulled up lame and pointed to his bad wheel with a grimace, a la Magic Johnson circa 1989 NBA Finals (Dayum, I’m old). Kelly then proceeded to limp over to sit in the shade, muttering, “No mas.” Because, you know, when in Rome, speak Roman.

    Bust…

  8. ytrain says: Jul 29, 2010 2:44 AM

    Minor injury, thankfully. Go Skins!
    And yes that was quite the debacle.

  9. lakedog19352 says: Jul 29, 2010 2:50 AM

    Zebar,
    it is gonna be a terrible offense because it is a team with with three over the hill RB and a joke of an air guitar QB who, in three games scored 30 points against the division champs (30 points on a much more talented offense than he has now mind you) going to a team that all but got shut out twice to the same division champ. In summary, McNabb stinks. Capiche?

    Yea I was at that MNF game last year. Although hilarious, that play was just embarrassing. Even the Giants fans felt sorry for us after that.

    tightness of the hamstring is an injury?
    get out of here..this is becoming more of a joke. did florio write this and tell you to put his name on it?

    “How is this offense going to be terrible? RB’s are Larry Johnson, Clinton Portis and Willie Parker. ”
    How is this offense going to be terrible, you ask?
    Simple…those guys blow.

    “Hell week” probably should have some adult supervision.

  17. The Black Cat says: Jul 29, 2010 7:51 AM

    Its a sore hamstring, its not like he broke his leg! Sheesh….

  18. lespaul89 says: Jul 29, 2010 7:57 AM

    Wonder if he pulled his leg overextending for a pass McNabb zinged at his feet.
    zing

    It seems to me that Donavon McNabb has a history of doing well with a less than great WR corps. An aging Santana Moss and an unproven Devin Thomas is sure a hell of lot better than Todd Pinkston and Reggie Brown.
    Not to mention the fact that the Skins have the best TE tandem in the NFL. That will fill a lot of the holes in the receiving game.
    The Redskins had the 16th passing offense last year, and that was with a MUCH worse line than this year, a MUCH more average QB in Campbell, and a bonehead (Zorn) at the helm. It can only go up, and I have a feeling the jump will be significant.
    Get some facts and come back and see me.

    “Hahaha, how can they fail with this skilled set of receivers?? Redskins=cellar of the NFC East.”
    Got to love people how think Receiver is the most important position on the field. It’s no wonder these guys are developing ego’s the size of mount everest. Reciever is clearly the most overrated position in all of football.
    The Chiefs in the early 2000′s proved that with Eddie Kenninson as their number one split end by constantly finishing as a top 5 offense including two finishes at number 1 overall. All you need these days is a QB and line. Everything else is gravy.
    Plus even if Receiver was the most important position in football it still wouldn’t change the fact that Kelly had been in danger of being cut for a while now. Right now at best he’s looking at a spot as the 5th receiver.
    QB’s make the receivers not the other way around.

    People on this site baffle me. They have no idea wtf they are talking about. Malcolm Kelly is barely a contributor. Yes this is a set back for him but it would not make any difference in a win or loss. Homo will be dumped on his head a bunch of times and the skins will win the 1st game of the season. Put it in the books.

  23. boysroll says: Jul 29, 2010 8:54 AM

    They will be first place if you turn the paper upside down….LMFAO.

  24. SkinnySkins says: Jul 29, 2010 8:56 AM

    Im done with him. Although the he and the team claim it is for injury, I believe this is the third year in a row (out of 3) he has sat out of some portion of training camp. Regardless of injury or not, he doesn’t have the work ethic to make it in the NFL, and it shows in his production. We give Haynesworth crap for not wanting to work but Kelly is just as bad. Drop him and move on, he’s not that good anyway.

  25. aj says: Jul 29, 2010 8:59 AM

    It takes time for the qb to master the shanny-o. McNabb may struggle early

  26. bigmike79 says: Jul 29, 2010 9:02 AM

    @Roscoe This is the Nfl not a Madden video game playcalling and a solid game plan make wide outs look good plus they have a good qb not saying that Santana Moss is an all out better wide out than Deshawn Jackson but he is a more polished receiver than him, and Devin Thomas is no slouch himself plus the backfield that everyone says is to old. Im predicting now and im not even a Redskins fan that this team will probably win this division, the Cowboys are overrated, the Giants are lost, and the Eagles are to young and have a coach that doesn’t even ackowledge the need for a run game and a defense that cant get pressure unless it blitz the house.

  27. imissmydeadspin says: Jul 29, 2010 9:10 AM

    Only a Navy SEAL does a real Hell Week.

  28. Big Tex says: Jul 29, 2010 9:47 AM

    @bigmike79
    “Devin Thomas is no slouch himself” Uh dude, Thomas has less than 450 total yards and 3 Tds during his first two seasons. Additionally, his Head Coach has come out and said the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. Given a choice of the ‘Skins WRs or the group in Philly, I’ll take the Eagles.
    As to the RBs, Portis has been hurt, Parker appears to be done, and Larry Johnson averaged less than 3 yards a carry with the Chiefs last year. Jamal Charles averaged almost 6 yards a carry behind the same OL in Kansas City.

  29. myeaglescantwin says: Jul 29, 2010 9:59 AM

    you Foreskin fans will be lucky to see
    DMac = 3100yds 19 td 9 int
    & 50% completion rate
    Johnson = 900 yds 4 td
    Portis = 700yds 5 td + injury
    Parker = 400yds 2td + injury
    thats why this offense will suck

  30. jerry's kids says: Jul 29, 2010 10:02 AM

    This will be a good team. The OL has been upgraded. Shanahan’s kid made Schaub look pretty good last year. Might have the best TE combo in the league. DF is solid. Play the games and we’ll see.

  31. robert ethen says: Jul 29, 2010 10:20 AM

    It’s not too serious, just hurts like hell.

  32. MagicMan407 says: Jul 29, 2010 12:00 PM

    I think the Redskins will be fine its just a hamstring injury(not like he was sleep walking and fractured his skull falling down some steps).
    He was never a cry baby and refused to carry another players helmet or started drama his first year in the league. Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly had Jason Campbell at QB. Jason if he looked downfield was either too Chris Cooley or Santana Moss or check down that is it. One of these two guys(Devin Thomas) will get those yards that Randle el did last year. I doubt Galloway makes the team or does as the 5th or 6th reciever. WE DC!!!! HTTR
