Shawne Merriman wants an assurance that he won't be traded

Chargers restricted free agent linebacker Shawne Merriman won’t show up to the start of training camp, and he doesn’t plan to show up until the team shows a commitment to him in the long term.

That doesn’t necessarily mean a long-term contract extension, but Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Merriman likely won’t report until he gets some assurances that he isn’t going to be traded.

Merriman said he’s not looking for more money than the one-year, $3.269 million tender offer that’s currently on the table. He just wants the Chargers to tell him they’re not going to trade him.

If the Chargers tell him that, Merriman is ready to get to work. If not, he’ll continue to stay home.

Actually, what they (meaning Merriman and his agents) want is an assurance he will be free to leave next year without the encumberance of a franchise tag.
..oh, and a talk show on MTV2

Simply having Norv Turner hug him tightly, stroke his forehead, and rock him gently for awhile would go a long way.

Its called play to your potential, oh wait u dont have any now that your off the juice, next in line Mr. Cushing, im tired of these riod heads thinking they can play without the juice. This is why there college careers were so good, sucks when u get caught

Just having the training staff stop storing their supplies in his cubicle would make Shawne feel a lot more secure.

This sounds like a guy who knows another shoe is about to drop…

Why do the Chargers have to promise him anything but what is in his contract. If he doesn’t have a no trade clause, then he has no right to demand the Chargers ignore any offers that they receive for him.

  9. Cake Or Death says: Jul 29, 2010 7:08 PM

If the Chargers fall short again this year, it will be because they have so many me-first players in key positions.

  10. BoltsFan says: Jul 29, 2010 7:10 PM

At what point did the power to dictate such terms to a franchise fall into a player’s hands? Answer…it NEVER has. Merriman had better wake up,show up and do what he is told. He is an EMPLOYEE, not the BOSS (Owner).

The dysfunction cloud that’s been hanging over Oakland for years seems to be moving south. Smith should send Merriman’s overrated ass to Detroit for $12 and a new F250.

The fact they have put up with his douchebaggery this long is a miracle, so I don’t see why he should be worried about any longer. Unless he kills some dogs, or trys to smuggle codine.

  13. OntBoltFan says: Jul 29, 2010 7:47 PM

Like he is in any position to be barking orders. Why is he so afraid of a trade anyway, the guy would have been an UFA this year and not likely back.
The fact that noone wanted him in trade during the draft should be some assurance.

Just another a-hole. Hasn’t been effective since he stopped juicing and thinks he can make demands.
Good stay home dirtbag, nobody will miss your retarded dancing…. oh wait you’d actually have to get a sack to do that.

Don’t worry, Shawne. Nobody’s going to give up a first and a third for a guy with 4 sacks in 2 years. You’re staying put.

  23. BCGreg says: Jul 29, 2010 11:23 PM

In keeping with other Florio insider reports:
    You heard it here first.
Shawne, I, BCGreg, assure you that you won’t be traded.
    There!

Imagine this. Your a regular Joe workin for a regular company but your work is startin to slack off. You here rumors that your boss might want to get rid of you. You leave work an go home to tell your boss you are not coming back until you have a guarantee you won’t be fired. Haha.. how do you think that would go. If only these NFL players saw what us common folk bring home every 1 or 2 weeks… they would know how good they have it. They are some damn babies! I’m out……..

  26. DEMOLITION says: Jul 30, 2010 1:27 AM

Is this the same guy that says he won’t do his dance anymore, only to do it a couple games later? The same one that said he would sue the supplement maker of the brand he takes for causing him to fail the drug test, only to fallback? The same one that can’t play if he’s off the juice?
    So where’s his leverage exactly?

  27. MikeTysonWillEatYourChildren says: Jul 30, 2010 4:10 AM

HarrisonHits: Ironic, I’m assuming you’re SN is rodney harrison – who, not having bumped into a syringe of nandrolone – have bumped into HGH – just saying.
That being said, Lights Out is a douche and I wish nothing more than for him to do his “signature” dance alone in his living room with only himself and his ego – perfecting his retarded dance as he ponders when exactly it was that he fell from grace and in the words of rodney dangerfield, “…get no respect.”

  28. joetoronto says: Jul 30, 2010 7:02 AM

The Chargers have been Norvinized, full of me first crying babies.
