Vernon Davis confident he will get new deal

Antonio Gates just raised the bar for tight end contracts.  Will Vernon Davis be the next to leap over it?

We doubt Davis will get as much as Gates, a six-time Pro Bowler, but the 49ers cornerstone is confident that a deal will happen.  Before the season.

“I’m sure it’ll get done, but I can’t go into camp worrying about it,” Davis told Greg Papa on Chronicle Live. “I have to move on and try to get better.”

Davis has remained very quiet about a possible deal, but sounds confident about his place in the franchise.  He represented the team recently with coach Mike Singletary on a trip to London.

When asked what’s different at the 49ers State of the Franchise what’s different about the 2010 team, the team’s brass cited Davis’ emergence as a unique, premier player.

Now it’s time to pay him as such.

I think they just got a QB that could get the ball to him.

When you take blocking into consideration, he is the best tight end in the league right now. Not even close.

I’ll bet you he will. Davis is about 4 years younger than Gates and just entering his prime.

No question the 49ers are going to get this done it’s just a matter of time. But clearly Davis not only broke out last season & is on his way to becoming the best TE in the League with both his blocking & catching but he’s grown up alot as a person.

I’m really impressed with the way this guy has turned things around. From being a me-first diva and getting kicked off the field by Singletary, to being possibly the best tight end and even athlete in the league. He seems to have become a great leader and teammate, and his potential is really starting to come to fruition.

WarrenMoonGoat, You gotta remember that davis besides his proball season in 09 he was also a pro-ball alternate in 08. He is by far the best blocking tight end in the league and not to mention the fastest. His hands and route running skills have improved by a lot, fruit of his hard work and always being the first and last player on the practice field.

He’s a freak. Every team would love to have that guy.

He’s definitely going to be paid more than Gates…maybe not much more, but VD will be the highest paid TE before the season starts.

He’s a Javon Walker type…does nothing for a couple years and then has one decent year. He’s the kind of guy you don’t give a big contract to…Walker did nothing after his one good year. He got paid alot of money and that’s about it.
