Jerry Jones suggests Dez Bryant was overworked

Reporters love Jerry Jones for the same reason that probably drives coaches crazy: Jones talks and emotes like a fan when things go wrong.

It’s no surprise, then, that Jones wasn’t pleased when told about Dez Bryant’s high ankle sprain, which will cost the rookie 4-6 weeks.  In fact, he nudged his coaching staff under the bus.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen writes on Twitter that Jones suggested Bryant was “overworked” and wasn’t happy the injury happened on the second to last play of practice after all his reps and his kick return work.

“Got a feeling someone has gotten their butts chewed,” Mort wrote.

Wade Phillips has a pretty sweet gig, but an unreasonable “butt chewing” or five from Jerry Jones every season comes with the territory.

Everyone said Bryant would be a bust…and they were right.
AND he is obviously injury prone.

Really don’t think you can overwork a rookie before even preseason games start. It’s just “Jones being Jones.” Looks like he’s taking over play calling duties.

  4. penguininbondage says: Jul 30, 2010 9:03 PM

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round and thump over Wade Phillips’ rotund body.

  5. numberfour says: Jul 30, 2010 9:03 PM

    butt chewing? why, that’s chilly’s gig…

  6. Fonetik says: Jul 30, 2010 9:05 PM

Wade Phillips is pretty used to, and in fact has come to enjoy, a good butt chewing.

  7. Ilovefoolsball says: Jul 30, 2010 9:05 PM

I don’t know who’s the more irrelevant coach, Wade Phillips for being a figurehead when Jerry is the real coach or “Brad” Childress in Minnesota who lets his quarterback give him his schedule of availability….”I’ll get back to you” —Brett Favre on when he’ll decide to play football or not or report to training camp.

  8. MrHumble says: Jul 30, 2010 9:08 PM

That’s exactly why da’ boys won’t be playin’ in a SB in their new whorehouse this year……da’ Pimp himself can’t keep his nose out of the coaches business. da’ pimp likes to think himself the second coming of the “Boss” but he couldn’t carry Steinbrenner’s jock.

  9. Fthrvic says: Jul 30, 2010 9:16 PM

Overworked? Has Training Camp even officially started yet?? What a joke, I predict a disastorous year for the Cowboys only because of their own arrogance in talking so much trash about going to the SB this year.

  10. TryTheVeal says: Jul 30, 2010 9:16 PM

In there anyone else out there who actually thinks Wade” minion” Phillips is actually coaching this team?………Seriously?

  11. CaptainChaos says: Jul 30, 2010 9:19 PM

Jerry Jones suggests Dez Bryant was overworked.
    Why?
Was Dez asked to carry Roy Williams’ jock strap?
    Chaos

  12. OC Dave says: Jul 30, 2010 9:20 PM

Jones needs to keep his big pie-hole shut.

  13. McWest says: Jul 30, 2010 9:20 PM

Considering he didn’t play football for more than a year, he probably was overworked.
When DeSean Jackson was a rookie, AR wanted to make sure he saw the field his rookie year. Jackson was taking reps with the 1st team, 2nd team, and 3rd team. And punt returns on top of all that.

  14. agenice says: Jul 30, 2010 9:22 PM

over worked? or under prepared.. i’m going to go with the latter, since ALL cowboys have this sense of entitlement.. yet no gumption to actually achieve it.. They only want it handed to them.
Just like the vast majority of their bandwagon fans.

  20. Hawkeye says: Jul 30, 2010 9:37 PM

Jerry Jones is a moron. It is now three years removed from the Parcells era and time to unravel. It took about the same amount of time after Jimmy Johnson left for Jerry and his puppet ranch to become unglued. The Cowboys will be lucky to win eight games and fail to make the playoffs. Book it.

  21. SeriousRadio says: Jul 30, 2010 9:38 PM

  23. VoxVagina says: Jul 30, 2010 9:43 PM

Shut the hell up Jerry. He has already missed a lot of the offseason programs with injury/illness. Maybe he’s just fragile. Apparently Scandrick fell on his leg so Dez landed awkwardly. Shit happens. I don’t think anyone could blame that on being overworked in the first week or so. I don’t cheer for injuries, so I hope he recovers, but I hope the Cowboys monumentally collapse this year with all the “Super Bowl at home” chatter. The fact is that under pressure, the Cowboys fold like a lawn chair. After the way they ended 2008, nobody was talking about the Cowboys for the Super Bowl last year, so they played a lot better witout the spotlight on them. This year, though, with the Super Bowl expectations, they’re set up for choking, as usual in the Romo era.

  28. manofaiki says: Jul 30, 2010 10:00 PM

Yeah, the 2nd ranked passing attack from last year just lost a rookie for 4-6 weeks of the preseason.
Obviously the Cowboy’s season is over. We all know that Bryant was supposed to lift an offense that, you know, has trouble moving the ball in the air.
    /sarcasm off

The term you were attempting to not butcher is prima donna. It is not a word for someone who is about to become Madonna.
Does Roy Williams strike you as a guy who is primed to win his job back? Did you miss the 2009 season? I’m a Browns fan and I saw enough cowgirls games inadvertently in airport sports bars to see that Roy Williams doesn’t have a 1,000 yard season left in him. He collected his Texas-sized paycheck and got tired of doing anything useful.
It’s a lot easier to excel when you’re down 28 points every game and you’re the only guy getting the ball thrown your way like Roy was with the Lions.

  50. philgrek says: Jul 31, 2010 12:43 AM

I’m not sure why everyone is giving sh*t to Dez Bryant about something Jerry Jones said. Dez got injured. It was a contact injury which can and often does happen in this game. If you want to rag on him for getting injured, feel free to be the guy who makes fun of a dude for getting injured doing something you could never do.
As for what Jerry Jones said, thats his own opinion. He’s obviously flipping out over his brand new investment, but Dez Bryant didn’t say he was overworked. So don’t laugh on him like he’s coming up with excuses for himself.
Only in the sports media can one person’s opinion become news and actually accepted as fact just as quickly.

Overworked? How can Jones claim any of his players are being overworked? They are practicing inside the climate-controlled, San Antonio Alamodome; not outside in the heat and humidity. Bryant just got his ankle caught under him. Perhaps, it was the newly laid turf they are practicing on? Bryant is a young kid, so Jones’ suggestion of being overworked is laughable.
All the talk about Dez taking Roy Williams’ starting job on opening day was also a stretch.

  62. JimmySmith says: Jul 31, 2010 8:35 AM
