Jerry Jones suggests Dez Bryant was overworked

Reporters love Jerry Jones for the same reason that probably drives coaches crazy: Jones talks and emotes like a fan when things go wrong.

It’s no surprise, then, that Jones wasn’t pleased when told about Dez Bryant’s high ankle sprain, which will cost the rookie 4-6 weeks.  In fact, he nudged his coaching staff under the bus.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen writes on Twitter that Jones suggested Bryant was “overworked” and wasn’t happy the injury happened on the second to last play of practice after all his reps and his kick return work.

“Got a feeling someone has gotten their butts chewed,” Mort wrote.

Wade Phillips has a pretty sweet gig, but an unreasonable “butt chewing” or five from Jerry Jones every season comes with the territory.

  1. Everyone said Bryant would be a bust…and they were right.
AND he is obviously injury prone.

  2. Really don’t think you can overwork a rookie before even preseason games start. It’s just “Jones being Jones.” Looks like he’s taking over play calling duties.

  3. The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round and thump over Wade Phillips’ rotund body.

  4. I don’t know who’s the more irrelevant coach, Wade Phillips for being a figurehead when Jerry is the real coach or “Brad” Childress in Minnesota who lets his quarterback give him his schedule of availability….”I’ll get back to you” —Brett Favre on when he’ll decide to play football or not or report to training camp.

  5. That’s exactly why da’ boys won’t be playin’ in a SB in their new whorehouse this year……da’ Pimp himself can’t keep his nose out of the coaches business. da’ pimp likes to think himself the second coming of the “Boss” but he couldn’t carry Steinbrenner’s jock.

  6. Overworked? Has Training Camp even officially started yet?? What a joke, I predict a disastorous year for the Cowboys only because of their own arrogance in talking so much trash about going to the SB this year.

  7. In there anyone else out there who actually thinks Wade” minion” Phillips is actually coaching this team?………Seriously?

  8. Jerry Jones suggests Dez Bryant was overworked.
    Why?
Was Dez asked to carry Roy Williams’ jock strap?
    Chaos

  9. Considering he didn’t play football for more than a year, he probably was overworked.
When DeSean Jackson was a rookie, AR wanted to make sure he saw the field his rookie year. Jackson was taking reps with the 1st team, 2nd team, and 3rd team. And punt returns on top of all that.

  10. over worked? or under prepared.. i’m going to go with the latter, since ALL cowboys have this sense of entitlement.. yet no gumption to actually achieve it.. They only want it handed to them.
Just like the vast majority of their bandwagon fans.

  11. Everyone said Bryant would be a bust…and they were right.
AND he is obviously injury prone.

Don’t be a tpyical jealous Ravens fan. Jerry got him before your Ravens could… deal with it.

  12. lets baby this pre-madonna along all we can. good for roy williams if he can step it up and win the job back.

  13. Jerry Jones is a moron. It is now three years removed from the Parcells era and time to unravel. It took about the same amount of time after Jimmy Johnson left for Jerry and his puppet ranch to become unglued. The Cowboys will be lucky to win eight games and fail to make the playoffs. Book it.

  14. Shut the hell up Jerry. He has already missed a lot of the offseason programs with injury/illness. Maybe he’s just fragile. Apparently Scandrick fell on his leg so Dez landed awkwardly. Shit happens. I don’t think anyone could blame that on being overworked in the first week or so. I don’t cheer for injuries, so I hope he recovers, but I hope the Cowboys monumentally collapse this year with all the “Super Bowl at home” chatter. The fact is that under pressure, the Cowboys fold like a lawn chair. After the way they ended 2008, nobody was talking about the Cowboys for the Super Bowl last year, so they played a lot better witout the spotlight on them. This year, though, with the Super Bowl expectations, they’re set up for choking, as usual in the Romo era.

“pre-madonna?” seriously? i think the phrase you’re looking for is “prima donna”

  16. Yeah, the 2nd ranked passing attack from last year just lost a rookie for 4-6 weeks of the preseason.
Obviously the Cowboy’s season is over. We all know that Bryant was supposed to lift an offense that, you know, has trouble moving the ball in the air.
    /sarcasm off

  17. Then again……..Jerry said the same thing about his face, and then he looked in the mirror and smiled at those corn nuggets he calls teeth….

The term you were attempting to not butcher is prima donna. It is not a word for someone who is about to become Madonna.
Does Roy Williams strike you as a guy who is primed to win his job back? Did you miss the 2009 season? I’m a Browns fan and I saw enough cowgirls games inadvertently in airport sports bars to see that Roy Williams doesn’t have a 1,000 yard season left in him. He collected his Texas-sized paycheck and got tired of doing anything useful.
It’s a lot easier to excel when you’re down 28 points every game and you’re the only guy getting the ball thrown your way like Roy was with the Lions.

  19. Friday 30Jul10 2000hrs
    Cut: Jon Kitna.
    Cut: Orlando Scandrick.
    By Jerry Jones.
    Personally.

  20. So is this 4-6 weeks from right now or week 1 of reg season? If it’s 4-6 weeks from now he will be back for week 1 of reg season. Also this time frame is prob horse shat ( I hope lol ).

  21. I heard that everytime the name Jerry Jones gets dropped, an ethiopian child gets punched in the face. You guys should look into that.

  22. Dez is overworked. He is singlehandedly supporting several thousand media people across the country. In July.

  23. Overworked in traing camp? Dezi’s mom’s mouth is what I call overworked!
Now everyoen sees why he was the 21st pick and not top 10 pick!

  24. 2 days of camp and dez is “overworked”…..what a freakin’ joke by jerry the pimp. why doesn’t he just name himself headcoach too. dez bryant has been sick, ill, and now hurt…..i think i see the hand writing on the wall of this prima donna’s career…….roy williams ll

  25. I can invision rubber neck now grining his pdiddy dolphin teeth in his deathstar owners suite….what a turd.

  26. love the cowboys, but jerry is an idiot!!! All rookies need all the reps they can get, period, end of story….. a freak accident of a guy rolling his anle doesn’t mean he was overworked, that’s just a dumb statement by a owner/GM who always shoots his mouth off before thinking!!!

  27. He probably forgot his cleats which overworked his ankle…he also forgot that he was hanging out with Deion…he forgot to carry Roy’s pads…oh yes he did not know…

Dude, that is some funny shit! LMAO!!

  29. Wade Phillips has routinely been getting his ass chewed ever since the Music City Miracle.

  30. Most owners would be glad to see thier players overworked, atleast they are erring on the side of effort. Don’t you think the Skins, and Raiders would have liked to see some put thier best foot foward.

  31. I’m not sure why everyone is giving sh*t to Dez Bryant about something Jerry Jones said. Dez got injured. It was a contact injury which can and often does happen in this game. If you want to rag on him for getting injured, feel free to be the guy who makes fun of a dude for getting injured doing something you could never do.
As for what Jerry Jones said, thats his own opinion. He’s obviously flipping out over his brand new investment, but Dez Bryant didn’t say he was overworked. So don’t laugh on him like he’s coming up with excuses for himself.
Only in the sports media can one person’s opinion become news and actually accepted as fact just as quickly.

If he’s a “pre-Madonna” would that make him Lady GaGa? Hey OH!!!!!

  33. There is so much ignorance on this site…lots of sissy’s making stupid comments cause they can’t make a legitimate ones…

  35. Anybody saying he is injury prone should probably note that he got rolled up on by a DB.

  36. That’s what you get when you have an ex-Lion throwing him the ball (Kitna), and another one running his mouth (Williams). All that’s left is for Kyle Kosier to land on Romo’s knee and break it. The Lions are a curse that affects every team in this league.

————————————————–Haha, it’s even funnier when you try to sing it.

  38. Overworked? How can Jones claim any of his players are being overworked? They are practicing inside the climate-controlled, San Antonio Alamodome; not outside in the heat and humidity. Bryant just got his ankle caught under him. Perhaps, it was the newly laid turf they are practicing on? Bryant is a young kid, so Jones’ suggestion of being overworked is laughable.
All the talk about Dez taking Roy Williams’ starting job on opening day was also a stretch.

  39. Look at the bright side, now Dez has the time to go out and scout the local strip clubs so he can live up to the #88 jersey. Finding a coke supplier takes very little effort and soon he will be a real Cowboy.

  40. Should of carried the pads big man! The curse of RW strikes fool! To all you other rookies in the future: Suck it up, be a man, carry the pads of your elder!

  41. Bad Karma man. Welcome tot he NFL kid, now suck it up and be ready to get back to work in a couple of weeks.
As for PT Barnum, this is what comes along with the territory regarding the Dallas Cowboys.
    Shut up Jerry.

  42. Awww.. Worked too hard… BY WADE PHILLIPS? Are you kidding me? Cowboys camp is like SixFlags minus the dirty ass wave pool.

  43. My goodness. A guy gets his ankle hurt while getting tackled and he’s injury prone and a fluke? Give it a rest. He’ll still have 8-10 TDs by the end of the season.

  44. “Look at the bright side, now Dez has the time to go out and scout the local strip clubs so he can live up to the #88 jersey. Finding a coke supplier takes very little effort and soon he will be a real Cowboy.”
We all know where he can get some purple drank, don’t we?
