NFLPA closely monitoring Haynesworth situation

With Redskins coach Mike Shanahan arguably punishing defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth for failing to participate in the team’s voluntary offseason program, the next question becomes when — or if — the NFL Players Association will get involved.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement prevents retaliation against players who opt not to volunteer to work for free (but for the per diem) in the offseason, and the union has been much more aggressive of late in taking on abuses of the offseason workout rules.

As to Haynesworth, an NFLPA source tells us that the union is monitoring the situation closely, but that no action will be taken at this time.

Despite somewhat popular misconceptions that the union can push a grievance without the affected player’s approval or involvement, nothing can happen unless the player initiates the process.

Currently, it’s unknown whether Haynesworth will file a grievance regarding Shanahan’s tactics.  But nothing about this situation will surprise us, and at this point anything other than further escalation would be an upset.

Myeeh…..Albert is winning the P.R. battle AND he can sit in his car while the others practice. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.

  2. Lotus says: Jul 30, 2010 12:56 PM

Actually he missed a MANDATORY camp along with “voluntary” activities.

This is what happens when lazy ungrateful people work somewhere covered by a union…I’m glad he’s in the NFL because if not he’d be sucking us all dry on welfare and food stamps.
Once again, Fat Albert is a prime example that you don’t have to be smart nor have a great work ethic to be rich. Fat, lazy and stupid people can be millionaires too….

    Dispute somewhat popular misconceptions ?
    You mean “despite”

  7. downwithdansnyder says: Jul 30, 2010 1:02 PM

He can get around that. Shanny isn’t punishing him for not participating. He’s punishing him for being a fat out of shape POS. He told them he would do one thing, didn’t do it and then showed up out of shape. Is this football or sissy land? If he’d shown up in great shape this would all be moot. Fat Albert always tries to find the blame elsewhere. Look at yourself in the mirror…gonna have to find a pretty big mirror first though…;)

  8. SpartaChris says: Jul 30, 2010 1:06 PM

To repeat what I said on the other thread:
Maybe Albert shouldn’t have been such an asshat during the off-season.
Good on Shanny for showing the team who’s in charge.
I’m curious though- Would Favre have retired by now if Shanahan were the coach of Minny? Seeing the way he’s kicking Albert’s ass, I can only imagine the zero tolerance he’d have for Fraud’s indecision.

  9. JVflorio says: Jul 30, 2010 1:08 PM

Man Florio you are really grasping. I’m gonna take the 0ver 5 on Haynesworth related junk stories you post on this site. You were so much better before you sold out to NBC.
I’d better let you get back to scouring message boards for intel. You used to be the Geraldo of sports journalism. Now your springer.

  10. Roger the Dodger says: Jul 30, 2010 1:10 PM

    Well, there’s a surprise.
Where was the NFLPA when Haynesworth was taking his $21M and then not working for his employers?
The NFLPA’s position on something like this is about as surprising as a defense lawyer’s position on his client’s innocence.

Currently, its unknown what the point of writing this article was.

I can’t understand the logic in escalating this thing. It doesn’t make sense to make him a nosetackle anyway. He’s a dynamic player capable of penetration (thats what she said!) If a team likes to run left, line him up at right end and vice versa. Put a cheaper space eater at nose

  13. robert ethen says: Jul 30, 2010 1:13 PM

Jay Glazer reporting live at camp from atop the shoulders of Darryl Johnston, confirms Florio’s hunch that the players would rally around Haynseworth. They have formed a big circle around Albert and they’re singing…”Brown girl inna ring, la de de da, brown girl ‘inna ring, la de da de da…”

  14. Chapnasty. says: Jul 30, 2010 1:17 PM

I remember getting detention once for mouthing off to my teacher in high school. As a result my football coach made me run gassers while the rest of the team watched. I felt like an idiot and never got detention during the season again. This is something that people who have played the game, at any level, understand. It certainly isn’t football exclusive either. It is showing that no one man is bigger than the entire team. The union will destroy the NFL sooner or later but this wont be the incident.

  15. Moonunit says: Jul 30, 2010 1:21 PM

There is a difference between punishing a player for not coming to voluntary workouts, and punishing a player for being out of shape. This was the same system that my high school football team had in place when I was playing. Players who come every day will be ready to play, if you don’t come, you have to prove even harder that you were busting it to stay in shape. He is a player notorious for being out of shape, and he never came to workouts. He knew what he would be getting himself into once he got to camp.

That argument would work better if team officials weren’t being quoted as saying that Haynesworth showed up for camp “clearly in shape” and if other reports from camp hadn’t claimed that AH had lost between 30-40 pounds.

Sorry, I have NO sympathy for Haynesworth. The dude got paid $100M, cried about a switch to a position of need for the team that just paid him, sat out all activities, then cries “foul” about a fitness test?
the NFLPA can go screw themselves. This guy doesn’t need union support, he’s on a $100M contract.
Unions were founded to help the under-privileged represent themselves. This guy makes more than 99.9% of Americans, he can help himself.

  27. patsfan1016 says: Jul 30, 2010 2:05 PM

I could have sworn I read stories where Haynesworth lost over 30lbs this offseason, because he was going to try to play linebacker. Did he fail the lineman or the linebacker conditioning test?
Also, if dez bryant does know the tradition of rookies carrying pads he’s not smart enough to be in the NFL!!!

  34. PUR-D33 says: Jul 30, 2010 2:59 PM

There is a huge difference between losing weight and being in shape. A dude that size could lose 30lbs just by cutting out sugar and carbs. Doesn’t mean that he’s in shape. Shanny probably watched video of Albert having to be helped off the field last year after two downs and decided he could condition him the right way. He needs the cardio training to build up enough stamina to stay in the game. I don’t blame Shanahan at all for this, Albert could be a monster if he’s conditioned correctly.

  40. dabbflappy says: Jul 30, 2010 3:46 PM

Haynesworth was out of shape last season and had to be subbed-out after plays because he was gassed.
Now the team wants him to be in shape and you think it’s punishment?
    On what planet?

  41. Simon12345 says: Jul 30, 2010 3:48 PM

    if the redskins are smart:
Saturday — no matter how he runs, tell the guy with the timer to tell Haynesworth, “you did it.”
Problem solved on multiple levels, and better btw than any of the writers or folks writing in know:
    1. Shanahan can say, “he accomplished the goal, now he can practice,” and still maintain the aura that he made him do it and never yielded.
    2. Haynesworth can say, “those f’ers…they put me through hell but I passed this test” and he’ll actually feel better about himself for passing the test than for someone just “giving him a pass.”
    3. The rest of the team can say, “Haynesworth paid his penance” and our Coach didn’t put Albert above the rest of us…but at the same time they don’t have to “rally against Shanny” if AH passes Saturday.
Then all of the people on this board can find a new reason to say the Skins season is doomed.

  45. ham1 says: Jul 30, 2010 10:59 PM

Ya know there are three other players on that team heavier than Albert.
They did the same freaking test and passed it. WTF is all the cryinng foul about? Union needs to butt out and let the Shanarat coach.

  46. TDHawk says: Jul 31, 2010 10:41 AM

Can you imagine if the coach was Lombardi, or any other similar hard ass? Take for example just any perennial winning high school coach from two decades ago. The lights would be on, Albert wouldn’t leave until he succeeded or tuned in his gear. Times sure have changed.
