Raiders ready for a renaissance

Raiders fans almost don’t know what to do with all the positive press their team has received this offseason.

Simply dumping JaMarcus Russell and having a productive draft have many analysts predicting Oakland will end their seven year run under .500.

Before moving on to camp fun, let’s take one look back at the Raiders offseason.

ampats takes the short bus, and is not even close to a real football fan.
Anyone who is, and actaully pays attention to what is going on can see we are building a good young team in OAK. The rest of you can just stew in your ignorance.
Even Florio is coming around, albeit slowly. He takes the medium bus.

Suck on what? That the Raiders won the 2010 AFC West Off-Season Championship because they had a decent draft and finally dropped the worst number 1 pick in the history of the league?
    Wow, you’re right, that stings.

  6. Robski says: Jul 30, 2010 3:49 PM

Hey Raider fans, do me a favor. Wait until your team wins 6 games (which they haven’t done since 2002) before talking crap. At least make the leap from laughingstock to mediocrity before you start chest thumping.

    Oops! Misspelled it. Sorry tampax…..

  8. theprince013 says: Jul 30, 2010 3:53 PM

DHB and Namdi working and staying late every day after practice? A QB who isn’t on syrup!? Decent draft picks??!
Don’t want to talk trash, I just want them to put a decent team on the field week in and week out.
It hasn’t been the other teams beating the Raiders, its been themselves. Assuming they can get out of their own way I see dramatic improvement record-wise

As a Raider fan I am always excited about the upcoming season this time of year. I’m always betting my 49er friends that the Raiders will have a better W-L record. Last year at this time even Florio and other “experts” were saying that the Raiders could shock the AFC west. My problem is the defensive schemes. John Marshall got Seattle to a superbowl coaching the defense, and got the 49ers to the playoffs in the late 90’s my concern is I hope he can run his defense without interference. Man to Man 90% of the time isn’t going to cut it. I remember after the Eagles game last year when Marshall dialed up blitz’s and we won the game but Nnamdi said that Marshall was going to be in ‘trouble.’ We have the talent, just hope that the coach’s will do the right thing to win.

    .500 ? that’s pretty generous.
the raiders are one of three yeams that should improve this year.

    the rams
the raiders…..as the old saying goes,”no where to go but up”

Patriots will enjoy a top 10 pick thanks to the Raiders. The qb they have now helped the Redskins to a worse record then the Raiders had last year. Not sure why people are making Things appear any different.

  15. superius says: Jul 30, 2010 4:16 PM

Raiders owe the Patriots a top 10 pick this year… Let’s wait another year before they start getting good ;)

  16. NCRaiderDon says: Jul 30, 2010 4:23 PM

Laughingstock?…the Raiders? Hey now…yes, they have been one of the worst teams in the last 8 years, and haven’t made good moves during the offseason, until now, but laughingstock? Come on…there’s been NUMEROUS teams that were a lot worse, and still are! Bills, Chiefs, Lions, Browns….
At least the Raiders have 5 Superbowl appearances, and won 3 of them! Not far off to think that 4 would have been in the bag, had the fagboy Chucky not made off with the playbook…

  17. KingAl4Prez says: Jul 30, 2010 4:24 PM

The “positive press” is merely an insulting offering of ignorant reporters who are trying to cover themselves for when the Raiders make the playoffs this year.
Most of the “positive press” has been things like, “Wow, the Raiders actually had a decent draft compared to their history of awful ones” and “Wow they cut Jamarcus who i have a personal vendetta against.”
This is complete and utter BS. Its funny how so soon people forget the 2008 draft and how we got several very good players in that draft.
The Foundation of this team is still built on the Al Davis blueprint that is constantly criticized by the mass sports media today. So if the Raiders DO win this year, which I believe they will, there’s still gonna be plenty of crow to go around. (Though they will say “I called it”)

  18. bodhisattva says: Jul 30, 2010 4:26 PM

The league will be a better place with a competitive Raiders team. Everyone knows this to be true.

“Looking forward to seeing who BB selects with the top ten selection in the 2011 draft from the Raiders…?”
And typical to the last couple of drafts he won’t know what to do with the pick… wake up, the FREE RIDE IS OVER patzies.
Yes, the pats have traded down for many picks, none of them any good however. The pats have become a soft team, just ask Brady.

  20. Dasmol says: Jul 30, 2010 4:28 PM

Just because there are people in costumes and carrying blades doesn’t mean it’s a renaissance.
The raider nation has been armed and in drag for years.

  21. Robski says: Jul 30, 2010 4:33 PM

Uh, the Chiefs were in the playoffs three years ago. Even the hapless Bills have been much better since 2002 than Oakland. It’s not even the chronic losing, it’s the awful personnel moves, bad coaching decisions (honestly, could Cable get a job anywhere else in the league except as an o-line coach?), and laughable drafts. All of it plays into the idea of Al Davis as a senile old man who saw the game pass by him 20 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to see the Raiders be a competitive NFL team again. I think it’s good for the league to have teams like them, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Chicago, ect in the mix. But I don’t see how one good draft and picking up a crappy QB who wasn’t good enough for a 4-12 Redskin team is suddenly going to pull Oakland off the mat when their only two star players are on the downside of their career.

  22. bigrig says: Jul 30, 2010 4:35 PM

Does this guy EVER have an original thought? The “broken record” syndrome gets old. Find some new material. You’re really getting stale.

  25. bigrig says: Jul 30, 2010 4:49 PM

    @JSpicoli
The best thing that is happening for Oakland is with the dumping of Russell it looks from the outside like Al might finally be listening instead of running things with his ego.
It’s been obvious for several years Al has lost his fastball. When he relinquishes the football decisions, the Raiders may become relevant in the NFL again. We get the off-season giddiness from Raider fans yearly, so you can understand the rest of us wanting to see some on-field production first.

  26. bigrig says: Jul 30, 2010 5:17 PM

    @NCRaiderDon
Don’t even try to create some scenario where the Raiders almost won their 4th SB in the Tampa game. Oakland lost by 27 points and were never “close” to being competitive.
They were whipped and embarrassed. Admit it.

  27. Blk&SlvrSoldier says: Jul 30, 2010 5:37 PM

    @bigrig:
Your an idiot, if dungy coached that tampa team that year raiders win easy. That super bowl raider team was Grudens hand crafted baby. He knew everything about the team. Play book, player tendencies, schemes ect. There is a sound bite from the game where Lynch turns to gruden and says “coach they are doing everything you said they would. Everything…”
Ol bill callahan didnt change a damn thing. You also forget our Pro bowl center (argued to be best in the league at the time) went ape shit the night before. So think about it you dumb ass….
But enough living in the past. The last decade is over and the raiders are definitely righting the ship. So all you haters can suck it!!!! I love being a Raider fan! If not for the sole prupose that we piss all you tools out there off, even when were at our lowest you still hate us. Hahaha watch out for the autumn wind Biatch!!!

  28. NCRaiderDon says: Jul 30, 2010 5:43 PM

Not a chance, Bigrig…they lost by 27 because our “head coach” left knowing everything the Raiders did. You can’t change the playbook in a year, and how could they fathom that they’d be playing the Bucs? Just bad luck…
You can’t honestly say Gruden didn’t know what was coming…they jumped EVERY route the WR’s ran, and Gannon threw 10 INT’s all year …5 in one game? Come on…
The Bucs were a better defense by far, but the Raider offense was much better than the Bucs.
    Facts:
In the Super Bowl, Gannon threw a Super Bowl-record five interceptions – three of which were run back for touchdowns – in a 48-21 rout by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs’ stellar defense was aided by the fact that their new head coach was Jon Gruden, who was able to impart to the Buccaneers almost perfect knowledge of the Raiders’ playbook as well as Gannon’s mannerisms and even some audibles, which Oakland coach Bill Callahan had left unchanged since Gruden’s departure

  29. Robski says: Jul 30, 2010 6:00 PM

So the Raiders had a bad head coach who got totally outcoached by a superior coach who Count Chocula ran out of town the year before. And this somehow is supposed to show that the Raiders were the better team and/or franchise? The Cowboys won a Super Bowl with Barry Switzer (and probably would’ve won in ’94 too if not for a bogus pass interference call). Superior talent can overcome inferior coaching. Face it, the Raiders got smoked that year, not just because of their offense but because their defense made Michael Pittman look like Earl Cambell and Brad Johnson look like Troy Aikman.

  30. JSpicoli says: Jul 30, 2010 6:07 PM

To whoever replied to me and the tb SB dude-
Al has made all the decisions, including TBranch Shaugnessy, Miller, Nnamdi, Bush, Huff, Richardson, Scott, and more. They said it was over for Al in 1997 too. Then they shut up for 4 years. He may not be the best, but I’ll take him over 2/3 of the league. It isn’t our fault we had to pay robutussin breat. So
much that he had to be around for 3 years to figure out he sucked. We could have been a mediocre 8-8 last year without the retard under center.
As for the SB look it up. I think we got within 10 in the 4th quarter after going down over 20 . Once again , another box score reader who doesn’t watch the game.

  31. granadafan says: Jul 30, 2010 6:21 PM

The Raiders will have their Renaissance when the owner relinquishes control of the team. Before the apologists come oozing in, yes, Al WAS a great owner, but that was a long time ago. He’s been an embarassment to the team the past decade or so.

    @Spacoli,NCDon,Soldier
Total lame copouts. Losing by FOUR touchdowns is an ass whipping in any game regardless of what the other team knows.
Cling to your flimsy excuses if you need to, but in the biggest game your team played in the last TWENTY years they got their asses handed to them.
And if Gruden knew you, didn’t you know Gruden as well?

  36. bigrig says: Jul 30, 2010 7:02 PM

I’m obviously not a Raider lover like Spacoli, Don, Soldier, but I will say there have been plenty of times [Immaculate Reception, Rob Lytle non fumble, tuck call] where it was obvious the Raiders got screwed.
But you guys lose credibility when you try to claim SB XXXVII would have been a Raider win if not for Gruden, Robbins, and any other excuse you can think of.
You didn’t just get out coached. You got out hit and out performed in every facet of the game. To think anything else is just kidding yourselves.

  37. NCRaiderDon says: Jul 30, 2010 7:08 PM

    Brad Johnsons Superbowl stats..

    Hardly great stats…

  38. KingAl4Prez says: Jul 30, 2010 7:09 PM

    I knew this would happen,
soon as the Raiders get good “Al was less involed”
Complete and total B.S. people just dont want to admit that Al Davis is gonna put a winner on the field, and the Raiders will return to their 1 great run per decade since the 80’s as the usually do, and will be a very good team until about 2014. Wake up people, the media loves to hate Al.

Diference is, Al has been awful for the last 20 years except for the period when Gruden molded the team in his image. When Al ran him off, he went back to being the west coast version of Ralph Wilson.

    ————————————————–
I don’t disagree that the Raiders got their ass’s handed to them on a platter that night. Still, to ignore the fact that Gruden knew the Raiders inside and out is just as much you kidding yourself. Even John Lynch admitted as such in an NFL films interview. He spoke of how Gruden trained the Bucs the ins and outs of the Raiders offense, which, mind you, he created. Lynch said they knew where the ball was going on almost every single play, and jumped the routs. It gave the Bucs a huge advantage, which you can’t deny. To do so, would discredit you, as it’s not an excuse, it’s a well known fact.
Now that isn’t to say that the Bucs couldn’t have won the game without this knowledge, but it can be said they had one hell of an advantage. We can all say “well if Dungy were there, the game would have turned out differently”. Thing is, if Dungy were still coach of the Bucs back then, they wouldn’t have even been there. They were not the best team in football that season, the Raiders were. They were the best team that night, but they also had one hell of an advantage. To think they didn’t, proves your a friggin’ dumb ass. Anyone with half a brain can figure out that knowing the other team’s playbook gives you one hell of an unfair advantage.
In the end, I blame the Raiders for not changing things up, knowing they were facing Gruden. The best team did not win that night.

  44. frostymugobeer says: Jul 31, 2010 3:57 PM

the raiders could “win it all this year”……………………………………………if they join the UFL !
really they have really blown some sweet draft spots, picked up a few solid players but seem to throw away big money on some really bad players(55 mil for javon walker to ride the pine and 62 mil to russell)….that has caught up with them .the only way i see them improving is to get lucky with a back up (gradkowski could become very good) or changing al’s need for speed mentality.
when they won they won in the trenches, not by having speedsters.

  45. raiderfansteve says: Jul 31, 2010 8:13 PM

hahahaha they could win in the UFL that’s hilarious…. Do you honestly think that’s funny? Amazing how you can actually have THAT boring/stupid of a joke and post it as if it’s funny… incinuating the Raiders can’t compete in the NFL, I’m sure you missed that they beat the Bengals, Eagles and Steelers last year huh? All bad NFL teams right? And that was with Bruce Gradkowski who is clearly less talented than Jason Campbell…
“When they won they won in the trenches” maybe you missed that they spent 3 draft picks in the first four rounds on OL/DL? Again apparently you took the year off from football and still want to comment about the Raiders… Lamarr Houston added to the DL, John Henderson added to the DL, two OL added… What more can you do in one offseason to improve the “trenches” or are you just spewing off things you’ve heard the last 5 years about the Raiders?
They’re a much better team, and I can’t wait for this season… Everyone like the idiot I responded to will have nothing to say and just fade away as the Raiders prove themselves. Also if those of you who commented regarding Jason Campbell’s tenure in Washington think that record was his fault it’s amazingly laughable… Good QBs don’t always win, you can be good in a bad situation, it happens year after year, but you guys wouldn’t know that, because most of you are just saying the same token phrases you’ve heard about the Raiders, this isn’t the same Raiders team, much improved offensively and defensively.
Now let’s start the season so these clowns can finally shut up when the Raiders are winning.
