Vikings get Gerhart under contract

Last year, the Vikings made a run at receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh in free agency.  When they didn’t get him, they addressed their needs by taking receiver Percy Harvin in the first round of the draft.

This year, the Vikings attempted to fill the void created by the departure of running back Chester Taylor by signing LaDainian Tomlinson.  When L.T. picked the Jets, the Vikings again had to resort to the draft to address their needs.

They did it by picking Stanford’s Toby Gerhart in round two.  As of this morning, he was the team’s last unsigned rookie.  Now, Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Gerhart has agreed to terms.

Gerhart figures to get plenty of opportunities as a rookie, either while giving Adrian Peterson a break or after Peterson puts the pill on the carpet four or five times in a given game.

I am sure if he “puts the pill on the carpet” Favre will be more than happy to pick it up and take it.
And the obligatory Vikings to LA crack.
Gerhart can give these guys pointers on California living when the Vikes move in 2012.

Contract may not get approval at head office since Toby had to sign his portion while bent over, looking in the mirror, and holding his butt cheek with his free hand. You know how hard that can be.

Should be good in goal line and short yardage, but can he block? I don’t think he’s going to be the third down back.

man lots of hatin’ on the Vikings on this website.
You cannot compare Chester Taylor with Toby Gerhart. They are 2 completely different running backs and it will show this year for the purple. Gerhart will not be the typical “3rd down running back” like Chester was. Adrian will have a lot of the 3rd down reps and Gerhart will too. Hell, Ryan Moats might even get some carries. I think the Vikes will put Gerhart in for complete series sometimes.

No, not at all. You cant tell me its a bit intimidating to have Toby in the backfield acting as the lead block for AD during goal line situations. Come on, even you have to admit that Toby, AD, Harvin, Shiancoe, Rice and Favre combine to make a pretty good offensive set.

I love Toby’s style. It’s fun to watch, but I don’t think it will work in the NFL. He’s gonna get hammered by bigger and better athletes when he’s trying to pound the rock. I don’t think he’ll last too long in the league due to that. I was saying this well before the Vikings drafted him too, as many others were as well.

Eh, a 40 year old QB, a running back with serious holes in his game coming off a down year, an aging defense, and a bad head coach? I think they are certainly a favorite, but they aren’t any better than Dallas (who has the same problem with the coach and a questionable O-line) or the Saints (average defense). There’s a reason the Viks always choke, I’m just not sure what it is.

BrentFavre and JimmySmith are the two biggest haters of the Vikings on this website. They must be pretty upset that the Pukers don’t get any attention from the media. It must be hard being a Puker fan knowing that your own quarterback came back and embarrassed you twice last year. Oh and Jared Allen tearing Rodgers a new asshole.

  48. JimmySmith says: Jul 30, 2010 6:53 PM

The kid has some talent but what the hell is he going to do with that aging O Line in front of him. The latter part of 2009, it really showed and in the championship game, it really came home to roost. McKinnie is overrated and is on the decline and may border on benching terrible, the center might be playing for his dad and that’s a nice story but he was never that talented to begin with. And Load ( Chilly’s favorite player because his nickname reminds him of his coaching duties with Lord Favre) is not consistent.
The point is the AD and Toby (a gay name if I ever heard one but hey, its the Vikings, need I say more?) can have all the talent in the world but if the O line lays some eggs, where are they going?

Ding!! Which is why it is so pathetic….. Just like the Packer fans who like to point out all those prehistoric championships never want to compare records after the Vikings actually joined the league. That’s okay, I like this one….
The Vikings have been one of the most successful NFL franchises. They currently have the fifth-highest winning percentage in the NFL. They are also one of only five NFL teams to win fifteen games during the regular season. The Vikings have won one NFL championship (pre-1970 AFL-NFL Merger), but subsequently lost 23–7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV. The Vikings were the first team to play in four Super Bowls, though losing them. The Vikings have won their division 18 times, third most among teams currently playing in the NFL and most among current teams in their division. Counting playoff appearances only after 1970, they are tied with the second most in the league.
That’s right, jump in with the “never won a SB” responses. So Dan Marino was a loser, too, right? Barry Sanders? How about Anthony Munoz, Earl Cambell, or Dick Butkus? I dare you to look Dick Butkus in the eye and tell him he was a failure because he doesn’t have a ring…..

Adrian Peterson is one of the game’s best running backs. 4.3 lost fumbles per season as opposed to a typical back’s 3.0 per is not enough to change that quite frankly.

I believe he’s saying the Vikings’ NFL championship amounts to the same as a Super Bowl loss in today’s format. That’s basically what it was. Yes, they won the NFL championship, but they lost to the AFL champion. You ended your season with a loss.
Off the top of my head, I don’t know where the 14th “championship” would come from. The 13th would’ve been 1997. Packers were the NFC representative in the Super Bowl–which in that example equates to winning the pre-merger NFL championship.
